Hey thanks for lugging around those cameras to show us what it was like. I appreciate it and your videos are helping me get into the hobby! Awesome work man.
Yep! Use the back of the knife for scraping off bark, making tinder shavings, scraping hides... Strike the ferro-road with the back. Save the edge for when you need it.
absoultely.. I've been getting real lazy lately. I need to get back into the fundamentals of wood processing. I never was really good at it. Im thinking a bushcrafty overnighter in the near future.
Hello Bryce, thank you for sharing another fine video. I really enjoy your 'survival type' videos. Two thumbs up on this video. Be safe out there. All the best to you. 🤗
Bravo for testing out some minimalist camping in crappy weather. It take some guts to learn by trial and error in an environment where most people wouldn't attempt it.
One trick is use plastic shopping bags to put hiking boots in your sleeping bag. The bags keep damp boots from transferring moisture into the bag. A moral booster putting warm socks and boots in the morning.
U should pile a bunch of leaves under your ground mat for more insulation, also put leaves all around the edge of tarp to block wind. Hell i think ill start a channel and show ppl these things.
Great video. May want to consider investing in a pair of water proof socks for winter hiking. Down booties are nice as well for sleeping in cold weather.
Pull the ferro rod straight back, keeping the striker in place at the tinder bundle....you won't disturb the pile so much, and the hot sparks will immediately contact the bundle (not having to jump 1-2" to the bundle...that's a long way for the tiny sparks to cool off or extinguish completely)
I live about 30 minutes from Mohican and I’ve been wanting to go but wasn’t sure if they allowed it . This inspired me to get started and I think Im gonna try here first before doing a multiple day trip . 👍
Not sure how I haven't seen your videos before. Great quality and a fun mix between UL backpacking and bushcraft. Loved seeing you brave the elements out there!
for winter camping, i put close to boiling water in my light msr dromadery bladder. use it as a hotwater bottle... really makes a cost bed and warms up cold toes etc. also means the water is not frozen when i wake up.
Thanks for the Mora tip :D I just picked one up recently from a local pawn shop and didn't know it wasn't full tang. Fantastic video, subbed, I look forward to watching more. Cheers!
Blue mats all they gave us during a 3 week mountaineering course in the north cascades. No 400 dollar air whatever. Put it on snow, ice, ground and of course, your hammock. Air whatevers get holes. No good. Time to get back to the basics
Last time my wife and i went out for the weekend, we had the worst thunderstorm and flash flooding we've had here in decades, the first night we cooked steaks with shrimp and mushrooms and bacon wrapped asparagus lol. That was a couple weeks ago. We are heading out this coming weekend again. I would do it every weekend if my wife would let me lol.
Great video! I ran across your channel last night. I like how your activities are a nice mix of lightweight backpacking with the fancy gear, and some good ol' low tech bushcraft....with some cycling thrown in. Reminds me a lot of they type of stuff that I do. I use whatever type of gear that works for the situation, and also for what sort of mood I'm in. But I do need to figure out how to get out on the bike a lot more like I did in years past! My friend and I did our first adventure race this past Saturday. I was a fun time, and we didn't too all that badly considering that we were still looking at our map and checkpoint list at the start time trying to figure out exactly what we were supposed to do first!
I know it’s not a bit of fancy UL gear but get some thick wool socks and muck boots. Feet will stay warm as can be and no need to worry about creek crossings. I have hiked 8 miles in them while hunting as well as done bear drives in some nasty terrain with no issues. The little bit of weight is well worth the comfort.
I have both of those things actually! haha. I've actually owned about 5 pair of muck boots back when i worked on the farm. Trail runners are a small sacrifice for more comfortable hiking. Once your moving its never cold 👍
I feel ya. My cold weather hiking is always during hunting season. My gear is totally dependent on if I will spend a lot of time sitting or moving. I have sat for hours in the single digits all bundled up and I have also been in no more then my base layer in the cold just to try and not sweat. It’s a never ending battle. I envy some of the guys I hunt with who can walk or sit in the same gear and not just be soaked from moving.
@@nathanielflory9916 oh yea for sure. Ive only went hunting twice, once for turkey so we sat for hours, but never saw anything. That was only a few years ago. But i have the Arctic Sport Muck boots and they kept me warm. Great boots. Ive had about every model they make. Haha. Used to get holes in them every 6 months consistantly from general farm work.
I’m sure you know about shoe goo then. I patched mine a year and a half ago with that stuff. I haven’t had any issues with the patches leaking. I hunt creeks duck hunting and also use them for fishing so I have had the patches submerged for long times with no issues. One was a good quarter sized hole/rip.
I actually went back and watched your video before i left town to see whether you liked 5 or 6 better and went off of what you did. haha. so thanks! The tent will unveil itself soon!
Too heavy for most backpackers. The mora knife he has is very popular for hikers its 4 oz with tge sheath and is a very sharp kbife that holds its edge well
Enjoyed the overnight video man, nicely done. My advice is to go with real boots in the wintertime. Trail sneakers don't do much to keep your feet warm and dry. That said, you clearly know what your doing and I'll be checking out more of guy our vids, thanks for sharing!
It was a low risk for your creek crossing but what I do is bring some camp shoes (Crocs) which are good for getting up in the middle of the night. I take off my shoes (boots) and socks and cross in my camp shoes. I then dry my feet off and put my socks and shoes back on when I get to the other side.
I sometimes bring camp shoes for water crossings. i use Xero shoes sandles for water crossings. They are awesome! I agree that taking the time to switch shoes and dry them off is worth it!
Excellent. I hesitate to leave a tip because I don't like to come across as I know what the hell I'm doing. I watched a youtube of someone doing that and it came in handy while on the Sheltowee.
i like 40 degree temps the best for backpacking. Nice and cool for hiking, not too cold at night. You should give it a try if you havn't. The "no bugs" thing is the best part. haha
Nice video. I'm heading up there in a week or two for a quick weekend, winter getaway - excited to get back out there. Like the Dolly Sods video also - was out there last year and loved it
Bryce Newbold - hope to see another video in the sods... and really hoping to get back there myself this year. In the meantime, a quick Mohican trip helps to scratch that winter wilderness itch
Glad you finally got some cold weather to test out your gear. Haven't been to site 5 yet ... Will have to check it out. Looked like you had plenty of dry dead fall!
Bryce Newbold I may go up over the holiday break for a night, although I also may go up to the snowbelt in Western N.Y. state and try my luck in a bit more snow!! Watching you video makes me want to get out quickly! 😎
Another awesome video Bryce! Great having the whole place to yourself. Nothing like some snow to make things interesting. Great camera shots and editing, as always. Thanks brother!!
Nice winter trip... Looks like you had a blast... Never trust the weather forecast, they have the best job... They can be consistently wrong, and still have a job... The bacon looked good... I watched the whole thing, and subscribed. Thanks for sharing.
Just found your channel and absolutely love it. Really helpful content and it's a great inspiration for wannabe content creators. Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work
I know you probably don't want to hear this, but a good pair of winter combat boots would keep your feet toasty warm. Maybe double up on some thick wool socks. For boots or gloves, anything with Thinsulate works great.
oh yea i have insulated winter boots. But sometimes i just like shoes better, yeaaaa they are cold but worth it if im doing high miles.. (which i wasn't in this vid. lol )
Im from johnstown not too far off from there i didnt know they had backpacking trails there. Thats good news think ill head there sometime in the next few weeks then wildcat is getting really old
Thanks kirk. It was a rough one for my feet. haha. If i knew there would be that much snow i would have worn boots. The map is terrible. But its Ohio, so you really cant get that lost. haha
Good early winter trip and also finding a spot to cross the stream! Getting wet feet from breaking through ice makes hiking not fun. It has happened to me in the past!
What if you slept in the mummy bag with the quilt over that. I’ve a 50 deg mummy 800 fill. I then put my 30 deg UGQ quilt 850 fill over that with the straps and cinched down. That’s what I’m looking at doing for cold weather when I get my quilt. Any thoughts on that.

Bryce Newbold I’m just glad that lense is working out for you. Yea the 50 is an awesome lense and yes I know what you mean about it being way to close for vlogging.
Brilliant upload thank you very much for posting. I'm sceptical about winter camping lol. I'm just wondering in this video what make/model is your backpack?
Thanks! as long as your warm its great!. The backpack is a Hyperlite Mountain Gear 2400 Porter. With the pocket add on and water bottle holder add on as well
first vid of yours i have seen, going to check out a few more. i enjoy you don't go out and just buy the most expensive of things, i can't do that either nice video though
Thanks Tom, i'm starting to get pretty deep in the expensive gear now. But im a bargain shopper so pretty much everything i own was either a clearance item, or on sale. 👍
You use the sawyer squeeze out there in Mohican? Anywhere from the river good enough to filter? Boil too? I’m gonna do some packin there this year and don’t wanna carry a gallon of water.
I've never filtered directly from the Mochican River, but the smaller streams on the southern sections seemed fine. It will "probably " be ok. lol .. go for it
Is a Backcountry permit required? Fees? What about bear safety protocol, are there bears in Mohican? Do they have bear cables set up or do you use your own system?
You need to fill out a permit to reserve the campsites if you plan on spending the night there. There is an outdoor kiosk that is near the forest service office at which you do so. As far as bears go, there are sightings in ohio every now and then but i never worry about them. I hang my food pretty much everywhere except ohio. The raccoons and mice will probably make me regret that someday. There are no bear cables in Mohican.
Thank you Bryce for the information! I live in Stark county and typically hike in the Smoky Mountains, WV, NH, and PA. Honestly never thought about this place. However after stumbling upon your videos, figured what the heck, will check it out.
Coach Wide Receivers No problem! Mohican doesn't quite compare to the smokies! but for only an hour drive its amazing! Stark county is just north of me! Im in Tuscarawas county!
Great tip on the Marshall's base layer - I have a new Marshall's a couple of blocks from my house.

Love seeing a backpacker that uses bushcraft skills!! Keep it up
haha! YES! thank you!
Bravo for testing out some minimalist camping in crappy weather. It take some guts to learn by trial and error in an environment where most people wouldn't attempt it.
Fun cold trip! Down booties are a must for me. Haven’t gotten cold feet since. They are definitely a game changer!
Yea im definitely looking into them. haha!
One trick is use plastic shopping bags to put hiking boots in your sleeping bag. The bags keep damp boots from transferring moisture into the bag. A moral booster putting warm socks and boots in the morning.
good tip!
U should pile a bunch of leaves under your ground mat for more insulation, also put leaves all around the edge of tarp to block wind. Hell i think ill start a channel and show ppl these things.
That was a nostalgic walk for me. Hiked the MO all over back in the 1960's - Thanks
Great video man. So glad to hear talk about NOT cutting dead standing trees. Too many people think that's ok. Keep up the good work!
I know... what really gets me is the live trees that are cut and still lying... because they couldn't get them to burn. Thanks dude!
Heading to site 5 or 6 this weekend. Was very happy to find a video of someone who stayed there. Good stuff. Thank you!
I will be there this weekend as well. For this ruclips.net/video/LLBqhIz9fnE/видео.html

that's great to hear! make sure you put which site (1-10) you want at the self registering kiosk by the forest office
Where do you live, I live on the east side of loudonville
I never go out bush without a raincoat or poncho no matter what the weather forcast is. Even if it's just for a day hike. I learnt that when I was 12.
Better to be safe than sorry! I probably wont leave it at home again
Not sure how I haven't seen your videos before. Great quality and a fun mix between UL backpacking and bushcraft. Loved seeing you brave the elements out there!
Nice! Glad you like them. Too many backpackers out there that are anti-bushcraft. lol
Thanks for the honesty. I’ll keep watching.

Ooh cracking ice. Good trip! Good to hear the costco blanket did decently. I haven't tested it a lot either.
I enjoyed your video Bryce. Take Care
Thanks 👍
Very good video. I like the narration of it since I am blind. Thank you so much for sharing it. God bless you.
so glad you enjoyed it! i sometimes think that i talk too much on these vids but i will keep you in mind when cutting things out! Thanks so much
Well done! Time to start planning some snowshoe expeditions!
I did the Mohican 20 plus mile loop on my bike ! This trail is amazing you did a good job showing the trail , hike on !
Thanks! I've been meaning to MTB mohican but i just havn't made it yet. Hope to go bikepacking there this summer

oh man that sounds good...
Just a thought, I carry hand warmers in the winter. They work well for your toes also. May be cheating but my toes won't get cold.
i've done that in the past and it does work pretty good. If i was going to out for a longer time i would have considered them for this trip. 👍

Loved site 5! Nice camera shots too! Ya lucked out on those icy stream crossing, lol. Can't wait to see your new tent!

Good production, good video. I was hoping for your success starting fire with the rod, but appreciate the lighter honesty. Good stuff!
Thanks so much. I always try to leave my mess ups in the videos... unless they are too embarrassing. Haha
try Wiggy sock liners if you are tired of cold feet in any weather !! And sleeping bags if you want a warm night wet or cold Made in USA !!
Nver heard of that one. I'll look em up! thanks
I appreciate the video. We are heading there in a few weeks and deciding which site to head to. Site #5 looks good!

Thanks! im out there all the time
I'm going solo there this weekend. Almost a year after this trip. Looks like I'm going to have rain not cold.
awesome! have fun man
Great video, 2 pound t-bone and a very large sweet potatoe will put me to sleep
ahh yea man.. sounds good!

Tons of wood in the area. And a good, flat site for at least 2 tents. Will definitely be staying there in the future!

Good to know man.. I remember when i was a wannabe! Hard to believe how much its grown. Thanks !
Great vid. Your bacon scene reminds me of a billboard I saw recently: " I wanted to grow my own food but I couldn't find bacon seeds."
😃
haha!! mmm bacon.
Fritz D - omg! 🙈
(which i wasn't in this vid. lol )
Nice trip

Another great video and overnighter glad to see you didn’t get both feet wet or lost cause sounds like their maps are wack great one man 👍🏻
Thanks kirk. It was a rough one for my feet. haha. If i knew there would be that much snow i would have worn boots. The map is terrible. But its Ohio, so you really cant get that lost. haha

Joe sent me!
Glad I stumbled upon your channel!
thanks for stopping by!
great video stay safe ATB to you
What if you slept in the mummy bag with the quilt over that. I’ve a 50 deg mummy 800 fill. I then put my 30 deg UGQ quilt 850 fill over that with the straps and cinched down. That’s what I’m looking at doing for cold weather when I get my quilt. Any thoughts on that.
Hey first vid I watched of yours. Good stuff. Sub deserved. 👍
Thanks a ton man!
Absolutely love my ghost whisperer jacket. Can’t go wrong with the mora knife either. Great video brother.
Totally agree! Thanks man. I used the 24mm primarily on this video! works great for me since my camera doesn't have auto focus.
Bryce Newbold lol I was wondering if you used it. Looks like it worked well for you buddy. I just think I don’t fully know how to use some of the lenses. I need the dumbed down version lol.
haha. I really dont know much about them either, but my 18-55mm kit lens is junky so the 24mm is going to be my main lense, and any close ups i use a 50mm F1.8. The 50 looks awesome but is waaay too close up for "vlogging"
Bryce Newbold I’m just glad that lense is working out for you. Yea the 50 is an awesome lense and yes I know what you mean about it being way to close for vlogging.
2017 video! I enjoyed it.
thanks man!
Awesome video, man! Now to get you in a hammock 😉

Where did you get that pack? It’s so sweet!
Hyperlite Mountain Gear. They are pricey. but I found mine on ebay for under half price
Sweet!
Thanks Fitchick!
Beauty of an overnight sir!!! How well did that Wal-Mart foam pad add to the insulation combined with your air mattress? Any cold spots?
thank ya! The pads felt great actually. I had no cold spots and felt absolutely no chill though them. It surprised me a bit
have you tried burning a small fire close to your shelter? there are ways to make it safe, and it'll keep you warm with less sleeping gear.
yes i have actually.. i plan on doing some bushcraft type campouts and having a fire nearby. 👍
first vid of yours i have seen, going to check out a few more. i enjoy you don't go out and just buy the most expensive of things, i can't do that either nice video though
