As a young basketball fan in the 80's and looking back now, Isaiah Thomas is just spitting facts! I remember it like yesterday. They were definitely chasing the Lakers, Celtics, and even Philly as he stated. They overcame those teams and were already dominating the Bulls. I hated the Pistons but I respected them a lot. They never had to chase Chicago, who were in their rear view mirror for years and ultimately was defeated by them in '91. It's funny though bc even though they had Jordan's number, they had to rough him up a bit and frustrated him with their aggressive style of play. They had to implement that style for one man! That should tell you something! Jordan was on another level but needed help to dethrone the Pistons. Zeke knows deep down how much of a beast Jordan was and seems to downplay that to a certain extent in my opinion...
That's all true. I wish he would stop saying that Jordan wasn't a threat. Obviously, he was. The truth is that the bulls weren't a threat. As a team, they did not have the talent.
That style was also used on the Celtics, 76ers and lakers so it wasn’t just for one man. It was Jordan was the bulls only threat at the time. No pippen or grant yet. Just Cartwright who was decent in his day and Oakley who was Jordans enforcer.
@@Mark-Anthony601 Jordan was a threat. IT had every other team coming after him. So, the picture he gives is a genuine one. 1988 was the most intense one he fought. Though pistons lost, the writing was on the wall that Pistons would dominate the next few years. Yes, Jordan sopped the pistons.
I wouldn’t say beating the Bulls in the playoffs 12 times in 22 games “dominating” though. Curry beat LBJ 15 times in 22 games yet we don’t hear LBJ fans say he got dominated by Curry do we now?
I watch those games, the Pistons was just a better team than the Bulls in the 80s. it took years for Jordan and the Bulls to be able to beat the Pistons.

Hearing Shannon and Isiah Thomas talk about the NBA in the 80's and all those NBA greats, some who have transitioned like Moses Malone and Dennis Johnson--makes me realize just how lucky we had it back then. Doctor J, George Gervin, Bernard King, Marques Johnson, Michael Ray Richardson, Jack Sikma, Paul Westphal, Artis Gilmore..so many great players.
As someone who is a Hawks fan, love the Showtime Lakers, and hated the Pistons, Isiah is speaking a lot of truths. I am glad that he is giving credit to Milwaukee and Philadelphia.
He wasn’t dominant over Jordan. The pistons was dominate over the bulls. There’s a difference. Jordan dominated their whole team, hence the Jordan rules.
facts & how about 89’ the series went 6 & in 90’ it went 7 games...Those were battles the BULLS got better every yr they didn’t dominate the BULLS they won tough series...91’ the BULLS swept them...
The guy spent a long time saying they did not have the talent but were a great team... his team dominated the bulls. Period. And the jordan rules is really nothing big. Anyone who played basketball knows you set up rules against a dominant player to shut him down... Mavs in 2011 on Lebron. Raptors or Heat on Iannis...
Y’all weren’t talking players as much as y’all were talking teams. Jordan as a single player played his best basketball individually during the 80s, he just wasn’t winning. In large part was his team not being good enough. Both Larry and Magic thought at that time Mike was the best individual player.
@Vishnu Venkatesh I guess wilt is hating also for saying he’s better than Jordan right? Lol ain’t no real man about to bow to no human y’all gotta realize that
My favorite quote from Chamberlain on why Jordan couldn't be the NBA goat was this one, “The difference between you and me is that they had to change the rules for me so I couldn't dominate. They changed the rules so that you could.”
I watched Isiah from high school on. He could play with anyone. Watch the Piston - Chicago games from that era and Detroit dominated them. Jordan had the smile, corporate backing and rule changes that benefited him that allowed the Bulls to become corporate basketball. Magic,Bird, and Isiah did not worry about Jordan.
I am a massive Michael Jordan fan and loved him growing up. There is no doubt at all that Isiah Thomas had his number before the injuries, it's simply factual. But Jordan was just as much of a problem. Shouldn't go forgotten that the Bulls were up 2-1 on the Pistons in the '89 ECF and Jordan was spectacular in Game 3. Just couldn't finish the series off.
Of course they didn't worry because they already knew they were going to win. It wasn't the bulls time, as you can hear sharp and Thomas talked about how stack the Lakers Celtics sixers and bucks was. The pistons had a squad but he never said Jordan didn't have the help and talent like the other teams they named.

@Xavier McDaniel how many championships did jordan win in the 80s??... Thats what Isiah was talking about.. his competition in the 80s were the players that were winning championships like bird, magic, Kareem, and dr j.. not players like jordan who were scoring over 30 points a night and getting beat in the playoffs every year in the 80s.. I know that this hurts some of y’all feelings but Isiah’s teams were undefeated against jordan in the playoffs in the 80s..
Thomas is right...His team dominated 80s bulls..But 90s bulls dominated pistons in the 90s..Jordan had nobody on his 80s team..Thomas had Dumars..laimbeer Aguirre n better players..Once mike had an all star player, the bulls never lost in the finals..Pistons weren't old in 1990..The bulls were just way better..Thomas n dumars were only 1 or 2 years older than Mike...Rodman was still in his prime.

@@chiefmario157 i think i get what your trying to say about his overall rank and the top 50 but thats another topic for another day . the team was older at that point mark aguire was older james edwards bill laimbeer Vinnie johnson. The nba was different in terms of age and conditioning . im not sure if your older or younger but in the 80s guys wasnt well conditioned like atheletes today. And although he was a year older than jordan the point was about who was the team they had to beat . yes chicago was a threat but the pistons ran that division for about 3 years. That central division was tough . you have to remember Atlanta milwaukee cleveland and detroit until 1990 all had better records than the bulls. 1989 was the shot in cleveland where the bulls got noticed . so the pistons was coming off of 2 consecutive trips in 87 88 and the game 7 finals lost vs lalakers. they had 2 conference finals apperances vs boston . so the pistons in terms of games played in the east was taking a toll plus the two years they went back to back in 89 and 90. Nobody in the 80s considered chicago a threat because they had lost to milwaukee boston and detroit years prior. The 80s belonged to the lakers. So i get where your saying but its exhausting to play 3 to 5 years consistently at a high level . plus like Isaiah thomas said . they werent talented like phila boston lakers etc. Being the rough house team they were is gonna wear them out too. The lakers were able to maintain that high level play because they had hall of famers plus very good teammates who was just as good. Remember scottie was drafted in 87 and traded to chicago horace grant was drafted in 87 bill Cartwright was still a knick until 88. john paxson was in san antonio before playing in chicago. Both Jordan & Thomas are rivals, they had their battles. It's a blessing that they weren't teammates. TOgether they would've dominated the NBA, it's best when you have the best against each other, that's when games actually matter. I myself became a very good player in my school teams, but I would always play against the best, it's the only way you can tell if you're good or not
I'm a avid Bulls fan and I don't remember what Zeke talking about but I do remember Joe Dumars was about the only one that did a decent job in checking Jordan on defense 😂
The thing that zeke is referring to which is something to respect greatly is that he talks about him being the captain on his team and Jordan the captain of his. Imagine that, zeke the captain, the alpha male of the bad boy pistons. Nevertheless, captain or not, the only top 50 of all time in his team or not, he is always talking about the pistons team as a unit, as a whole, and everyone else talks about a Jordan and zeke rivalry. Zeke knows that 1 on 1 they really weren’t the same position, but as a whole, zeke played his role as a leader on his team well and they punished Jordan physically as much as they could all within the rules and style of play of that era. Zeke stresses the pistons as a team were dominant over Jordan because folks present it as jordan against zeke. But zeke stays on course and always recognizes the team as a whole. That’s what you have to respect about him. It’s never an individual comparison to him.
This has nothing to do with whom Isiah checked. Remember, he was talking about the team. BTW, why would Isiah check Jordan, being 5 inches shorter, when you had a taller and larger Dumars? SMH! Also, when Jordan switched on to Isiah, he had no chance against Isiah's quickness and dribbling. This had nothing to do with individual match-ups.
You were dominant over him but people had to double and triple team jordan...... Come on man..... I like both players but to use the word dominant is over the top
I think it was pretty clear from the context what Isaiah meant. He was comparing Jordan's team against the team Detroit had. Which is why he was saying that, when Detroit won back-to-back titles, they did it with a better team, not with better players.
He is talking about era man. Jordan was still in the process of getting his team in shape while the greats continue d to dominant. Jordans team wins vs Isiah Thomas team wins ...jordan loses that battle my friend. History and stats don't lie.

As a young basketball fan in the 80's and looking back now, Isaiah Thomas is just spitting facts! I remember it like yesterday.

Isaiah Thomas pound for pound was in my opinion the best point guard I’ve have ever seen but he needs to just let it go. Jordan use to kill the Pistons as an individual scorer but his team wasn’t as good so yeah, they lost. But when Pippin finally matured and stepped up his game it was over. Isaiah acts like he is still trying to get respect! Bro you are respected and admired by millions of sports fans. Chill man!
Isaiah was too tough but c'mon, sup with these guys tryna shade Jordan like he wasn't better? Shannon wanting to change the Jordan narrative for LeBron, dam shame.
That's all that is.
He said jordan dominated in a different era not my era. He also said they were about the same age so that means jordan just peaked later that’s all. We all know jordan was better overall
@@westsidetutbeats920 of course we do. But Jordan was bussin HIS head. Fair to say the Pistons weren't checking for the Bulls early on but c'mon.
He telling the truth 100% his team's dominated MJs 🤷🏿♂️
In those 80s, the Milwaukee Bucks get honorable mention.
It’s the natural state of things that the old lion has to be defeated by the young one; and the cycle continues.
When Jordan beats the Pistons Thomas be like "oh we got old" when Pistons beats aging Kareem and Bird "oh we the best" Lol
Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Vinnie Johnson, Mark Aguirre, and Chuck Daly vs. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Doug Collins/Phil Jackson.
U sound stupid asf
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@JPK169 how? 😂 that’s literally what it was. Oh wait, you think Dave corzine was help? Lmaooo
@Xavier McDaniel No excuses. The same thing can be said for the Pistons that it took time for them to beat the Celtics and Lakers. But you don't see the Pistons of old making that excuse.
I see the Jordan groupies are making excuses
Isiah tell it and keep it 💯💯😂😂
My fave player! Thanks for shouting out those 80s Bucks... They were fierce just couldn't beat the big boys but took them to their limits Everytime
Why Dennis Johnson is another who should be on the top 75 list. Barnard King, Tracy McGrady. And every coach would take Joe Dumars over James Harden.
He's not lying though, head to head the pistons was dominating the Bulls, ijs
"I" was dominant over "Jordan"
Head to head was him vs Jordan(not the team). Jordan had better numbers. Jordan also dominated the 80s. He did win some MVP awards. He just didn't win a chip(yet). Thomas acting like Jordan got hot in the 90s after they all retired. No! Jordan beat them and the sad boy Pistons walked off the court crying😭
Naw his numbers wasn’t anywhere near Jordan numbers. However the pistons beat the bulls for sure. Jordan isn’t God he lost till he figured it out . We call it growing pains
@@jknumber5138 you also have fools like nick wright spreading lies saying the bulls only beat the pistons because they got too old, smh. a quick search and you'll see the bulls and pistons starting 5 average age are probably only like 1~2 years apart.
Zeke never outplayed Jordan and that's the difference. Jordan ended the Detroit dynasty and sent Zeke back to the locker room crying. Jordan beat Zeke so bad that Zeke couldn't even look him in the eyes or shake his hands.
jesus christ man
he ended the dynasty but has more wins than jordan when they play each other ..
Basketball 🏀 is a team sport. Detroit was a better team than the Bulls. As stated. . . " I wasn't chasing the Bulls." Facts 👑
Both Jordan & Thomas are rivals, they had their battles. It's a blessing that they weren't teammates. TOgether they would've dominated the NBA, it's best when you have the best against each other, that's when games actually matter. I myself became a very good player in my school teams, but I would always play against the best, it's the only way you can tell if you're good or not
Great Article! Isiah was On POINT!!
The only man to beat everyone favorite from the 80s he whipped Mike ,bird handed him the East ,he beat magic in the finals beat Clyde in the finals
Magic was injured in 89 finals. He beat a 43 year old Kareem. At the age of 30 he's acting like he was washed up after getting swept.
Bird beat DR J, Magic and Kareem, Isiah and Jordan and Hakeem in the FINALS
You were dominant over him but people had to double and triple team jordan......
Come on man.....
I like both players but to use the word dominant is over the top
Well, tbh is true... I mean Thomas was in a better team...
This Detroiter is gon' front. Zeke was correct. He was talking about the team...
This man just doesn’t stop
Isaiah speaking facts!!
Isiah told nothing but the truth
Im a big Jordan fan. I dont think what Isiah Thomas is saying is controversial. Its true. Jordan and the Bulls werent a dominant team throughout the 80s. It was the Celtics, Lakers, and Pistons.
Facts, but Zeke talking as if it's him against Jordan. Jordan still dominated the league then, his team just wasn't great.
I remember. This is fact that IT is speaking.
I agree with everything Isiah T said. Unsung G.o.a.t.
Jordan was a threat the day he was drafted
"Congrats man. You finally got us. Good luck."
That's it. That's all Isiah had to say.
Isiah owes no one anything ESPECIALLY the bulls. The Cetics walked out on Detroit and the Pistons didn't be a boy brat about it!
