- With Akuma on May 22nd comes the season 2 balance patch, but at a location test with the Akuma build in Japan, players are reporting balance changes present. These changes may in fact be what we see for the final Season 2 update. Of course none of these changes are confirmed, and may not be present in the final build. I go through and demonstrate what all reported changes are and their implications.

I think the meter changes to lvl2s are for super meter to put them more in line with installs which don't allow you to gain meter while they are ticking down, not drive gauge.

to be fair, I feel like the only change she needs is to do with her drive rush, which is pretty hard to eyeball. She's otherwise pretty well balanced

Drive reversal changes mean Gief (and Lily, Manon, etc) will have an actual option when clobbered in the corner. Gief life about to get better.

Might not be. Being able to do it raw off wakeup is interesting to counter throw loops, but some characters can't start a meaningful punish off their 6 frame buttons. If they can't punish it properly, the opponent basically gets none to small risk off trying to interrupt every string.
If they go after Cammy like that, and dont go after Ken and DeeJay, or Help Lily, im not going to doing anything except sit here and be mad.

I feel like the drive reversal changes may be big enough that we don't know as much anymore. It will fundamentally alter Ken and Luke if everything Brian describes indeed changes. At least, it seems that way from here.
Edit - I am not calling him weak or below xyz or anything. Just that it'll be worth seeing how that alone plays out before declaring anything. Let alone the rest.

Great video! One small thing - I think Aki's coward crouch dive is actually only upper-body invincible right now. So there's currently no situation she can jump over Juri's fireball. Hopefully that changes if it's fully invul for Season 2.

I'm so happy that jamie got those normal buffs, it's crazy how spot on they were with those. Now you can meaty with crmp or use it in situations where you would lose to di, react and cancel which he can't do reliably with his mp, or hp. But man the od command grab makes me so damn sad, i already gotta get 3 drinks for it

Great video Brian, just a thing, I think in the translations from HiFight he means that Level 2 supers won't allow for super meter gain with follow ups, instead of what you mention that is drive meter Cheers!

The Kikoken strength Chun-Li uses to walk or Drive Rush behind is not the Heavy version-she uses Light/Medium for that. The Heavy version travels very fast, but it dissipates much quicker, so it's more common for Chuns to use this version as a far-reaching "poke" of sorts, rather than something to walk behind. I imagine it's very annoying to deal with this move at the mid range, so they nerfed the recovery to prevent people from harassing people too much with it.
also, i find it super funny how whenever people try demonstrating how "easy" it is to confirm chun's 4/6mp, they simply can't get it lol

Note that Manon already can combo a lot of things off OD QCF kick, so still not sure what's the gain about this change.
This change makes it a natural combo rather than just a punish (and counter-hit? Idk) combo. Since b.HP also is a natural combo to itself you could be looking at, say, meaty b.HP b.HP into a lot of good juggle combos off of EX Grand Fouetté.
The changes to drive reversal are good news for Zangief, but would still like to see some air-invulnerability added to lariat (or at least OD lariat?)

I think the biggest thing about the drive reversal change is that a lot of 6 frames tend to not be very big so if you're shimmying someone and they drive reversal on wake up you might end up out of range to even punish but up close you can punish it. making drive reversal beat both throw AND shimmies at the cost of 2 sticks of drive gauge
I'm so excited for those Ryu changes, getting to keep denjin for hasho combos and still throw fireballs would be so nice
maybe by -2f at throw range what they mean is that if you're in throw range with jamie so pretty much face to face and you palm, you end up with a -2 frame, is what i understood.

You're wrong about the implications on the Chun changes. You can't walk behind Heavy fireball; it's too fast. Chun walks behind her light fireball. Also, the meter gain on S2 is not for drive rush meter. You see she doesn't gain any back during the combo. It's super meter they're likely reducing. You can use super 2 and gain half a bar of super with the follow up, so you can use super 2 twice in the third round pretty easily as Chun. They'll likely add super meter proration after s2.
You can gain drive meter after super 2 if you don't use drive rush to combo into it. Example if you do 2mk drc 4hp super 2 it won't gain drive meter. If you just do a 4mp into super you can recover drive meter during the air juggle.
@Corbear41 True. What I meant is she doesn't gain any significant amount of dr meter during super 2. Not anything that would be considered a problem.

Pretty sure "meter gain" nerfs with SA2 are for super meter not drive. So you can't get half of a bar back in Chun combo post SA2 for example
One of Gief's few ways to get Oki was after back throw...😭
People should have been using crouch throw instead of back throw anyway because Gief can't shimmy after corner backthrow. Low key this is actually a buff if Gief 2 Throw isn't changed because people will start using the already better option.
If you think I'm joking, literally watch how many times top Gief players either lose the corner to forwards jump or perfect parry after 4 throw. That kind of RPS is actually something Gief often can't afford, whereas 2 Throw lets you actually anti air while still being plus enough to whiff punish with L/M SPD.

The chun change would also mean 4/6mp is also worse as a poke because the di cancel window is smaller. It was already a good poke though so it's not like it's the end of the world.

@@doctordice2doctordice210 top 8 for evo was literally 3 kens, 2 lukes, 2 jp, 2 blanka, a chun li and a guile. thats 5 top tiers, 5 zoner types near top tier and chun-li who people also say it top tier when played well. Its not a very diverse group.

@@gameclips5734 so a lot of the weaker characters really have dysfunctional anti airs right now. Gief is notorious for having level 1 super whiff, and his lariat loses upper body air invincibility as soon as the move becomes active, resulting in trades over clean anti air hits and he can't do anything after a cHP hit. Both AKI and Dhalsim have long horizontal anti airs that are too slow to actually use as anti airs (medium whip, back HP). AKI has bunch of dead zones on her anti air. Jamie's need to be timed weirdly because his anti air hits so low to the ground.
For moves designed as anti airs, they either whiff or trade against air a lot.
@@HellecticMojo i'd argue that some AA's are designed to be less consistent, especially ones with very simple inputs like gief's lariat. They also fixed his SA1 already? I thought AKI used heavy whip for AA which looks pretty fast to me and she has normal options. Dhalsim is a zoner with lots of options to keep the opponent out, i think giving him even more easy AA normals would just make the character unbalanced. Idk much about jamie's DP but I could believe it's awkward to use.

The quality of life change for Cammy's level two is actually not a great one because the input now overlaps with spin knuckle, meaning you cannot buffer spin knuckles for free without getting SA2 on accident. So that's a third nerf, imo.
Strange that she gets three nerfs despite such little representation on the top level.

It wasn't for naught. It's still really useful info for this patch, it's unfortunate that it'll change soon, but it'll still be useful knowledge until the 22nd
I am going to assume there are more changes. I am hoping for less nerfs and less and less. Ive been saying this all along, more buffs, less nerfs. As a Ken main, I feel he works perfect as his intended strategy. Why not make other characters work on the same level? Give them some better normals here and there, add some variants to their specials for more uses, noticed some characters simply have light, medium and strong on a special and nothing much from it changes other than range or speed or damage, whereas utility is also important. Like Ryu, he has light tatsu for creating space, medium for corner carry, high tatsu for corner swap. These are very important tools that can be used in different situations.
More buffs, less nerfs. I am still of this opinion.
But the way this is going I am not so sure I should be happy or not. The wake up reversal is a huge deal and I can't wait to try it out. The rest all mostly sounds like nerfs rather than buffs except for Ryus' denjin change. I didn't see the entire video but I saw other videos out there too and it feels skewed more to nerfs than buffs.
So I am expecting to see more nerfs for Ken as well. I mean, again as a Ken main I see a nerf here that is total scrub bait, you are practically checking if someone is mindlessly spamming you. They nerf this? Really? THIS? This is like saying "we see some players are playing Mashing Fighter 6, so we will incentivize them to continue doing it by taking away a punish against mashing".... Which makes me wonder, wtf else are they going to nerf on Ken if they would even nerf something as ridiculous as this?
There is a chance its the only nerf, but I also doubt this. I doubt this is the final version that we will get in a month from now.
On a side note, its not even a nerf in some occasions. Reason being that they could interupt with invincible reversals after that initial medium punch so now if they are in block stun it makes it safer to start your target combo and go into jinrai kick if it doesn't land etc. So depending on the situation, its not even a clear nerf, its a buff for Ken in those cases, and a nerf for scrub checks...
Idk, seems like the dumbest change ever and if this is the only change Ken will get (which it wont), we will not hear the end of the whining for another year. Omggggg, Ken is so brooookeeeeen. Yeah, stfu.

Cliff size grains of salt taken on stuff like this. There's no way the only change happening to Lily is a nerf. Literally her only good button that can lead into a special without meter/stocks gets nerfed, they have to give something somewhere else to compensate.

The chun li medium punch nerf is WAYYY TOO MUCH bruh.
Like omg your telling me Ken, Luke and Ryu and alot of the cast can have the mediums and heavy that can snipe you and take up most of the screen (we all know how Ken's hp feels), but chuns heavy is extremely situational and long startup and recovery, doesn't combo already, and you get hit out of it by everything. So we also need to nerf chuns only good utility button?? Wayyy too much imo

I think these balances played out due to the wake up drive reversals and drive reversals being minus 6. However I'm not sure why nerf game play of less successful characters and nerf the "fun" of gimmick characters. Majority of the gimmick characters struggles to win. I will say I like the idea of a guessing game from knock down. Kind of remind me of the older sf vs getting rolled over and at best resetting neutral depending on the character. Its no surprise Luke isnt nerfed. I hate to say this and even capcom admitted they do play favorites. Ryu was bad but thats bad for business now Luke and Ryu can share the same stage. Zangief got another small buff and and explanation we already knew. However one small step could turn into one large leap in the right way for gief. Thats the only char im concerned with.
if JP only have sa2 nerf, and some change side combo still exist but may have less damage (less 200-300 in average)

It's the first day of the event, the people get 10 mins to play for their session, and Lily isn't a very popular character, especially in Japan. We gotta wait longer than this to judge any possible changes.
I always imagine Lily doesnt get much cause as weak as she can be she is one buff away from being broken if that makes sense.
