I too sometimes think of the enemy soldier, who is trained and has lived their whole lives, up until the point they run into the protagonist and get domed in a fraction of a second.
The *Reconstructor* weapon which you so praise in the *Armageddon* section of this review *is actually present in GUERILLA as well* ... You just have to beat the game's main story / mission line to obtain it from the *Weapons table* ! :)
The first game has a crazy amount of hidden stuff if you are willing to blow a ton of stuff up. You can actually make an entire section of a level collapse if you have enough ammo, killing everything on that section of the level.
I love the weird rollercoaster of tone and quality that was Red Faction. The first one is still by far my favorite. That last game really killed the franchise though because it was so genetic compared to the previous 3 games.
I am a boomer shooter fan that loves vagrant story and knights in the nightmare-in other words, the exact type of person who watches KBash. (Tho I also love Metroid Prime, plz forgive my sins)
swear you always catch me off guard with which games from my childhood you decide to cover. Never expected Red Faction, Valk Profile, and Prince of Persia touched now adays. (And those are the popular ones unlike Nights in a Nightmare and Ribbit King) , yet you always provide! Kbash my goat! hopes to see Spectrobes or Tak some day as well, but honestly always love to see a fun and wordy perspective on my random childhood impulse buys!
Pretty sure you mean *K* nights in *the* Nightmare? Also, such a weird thing to mention it *plus* Ribbit King *and* Valk Profile in the same sentence and context as PoP and RF... O_o
I played the red faction guerilla demo for endless hours. The destruction was so fun and then when I finally got the full game I was so happy to learn that's the game
I love how I can have absolutely no interest in the games you're talking about but still be totally ready to watch the shit out of the video anyways lol. Keep up the great work brother
Never thought I’d see anybody talk about the OG Red Faction and RF2 - awesome! I loved these games as a kid! Two of my favorites on PS2. Weirdly, I actually have a lot more positive memories of 2 than I do of 1, but all because of the multiplayer, which I largely played by myself. I remember it had this really cool feature where you could create bots to fight against, and as they did more matches and killed more enemies, you could increase their stats and they would progressively get more skilled. So I’d spend hours just playing and training alongside a couple of bots I’d built up just to see if I could stand up to them by myself once they’d reached their peak ability.
The mission titled: Start Your Engines for Guerrilla is possibly my favorite video game level/mission of all time. It’s pretty early on in the game. Cars are smashing into you, flying over your head, the clock is ticking, your allies are yelling at you on the comms, your vehicle is breaking apart. All the while, you’re crashing into these towers at top speed. I still think of it fondly every time anyone talks about Red Faction.
I really hate people who complain about linear games. Some of the best experiences I've had in video games were linear ones, hell even the best parts of some open world games are linear set pieces the game pulls you from the world to take part in. I love a good sandbox but that's not all anyone wants from games, a linear experience is one that can be tailored and constructed into something truly specially because the devs have more control over the player in a linear setting.
i'm 100% uninterested in the FPS genre outside of Doom or a couple outliers (Vomitoreum, Cultic) but i'll take a new KBash upload on whatever game it is. Unless he does a video on sports games than i'm out lol.
Kinda interesting how Volition's most notable works started somewhat grounded and both kept ramping up and getting less and less serious until their very last entries had absolutely nothing to do with the original concept. Saints Row 4 isn't about gangs at all (GoH is a spinoff also without gangs and the reboot isn't connected to the original series so I'm not counting them), and the revolution has been over for a while by the time Red Faction Armageddon starts.
It’s a shame Volition never used GeoMod in Saints Row, and it’s really stupid the reason they didn’t was because they thought people would think it looked bad. I remember playing the second game back when it came out. The GeoMod stuff in the first game was the reason to play that game, it was the selling point of that game that got talked up every time Red Faction was mentioned...so it was very odd they scaled that back to the degree they did. You go in expecting it to be even crazier than the first, only to be disappointed they pulled back on the whole selling point of Red Faction. I have to imagine the only reason Red Faction: Guerrilla shifted to third person was because, by the time they started it on, Saints Row was what they were known for.
i think you tweeted a little while ago, wondering why people watch your videos. well, i think this video is a perfect example of why i personally love hearing your thoughts. your humor is self aware and great, but it's how thoughtful you are with your critiques, especially in such a casually leftist way, that always grab me. you really, really think about these video games, with a little cynicism and a lot of empathy, and synthesize an easily digestible but in-depth analysis. love it.
I have fond memories of Red Faction, to me it was the first game that used both thumb controllers on PS2. My brother and cousin played the split screen all the time. Everyone wanted the rain gun to shoot through walls, or dig tunnels lol good times
great vid kbash it's fun seeing a vid from you that's out of your norm. also it's interesting to think about all these shooters that had to release in HL's shadow while trying to up the ante to make it it's own unique take in the genre
Fun fact, John Romero also worked on 2005's Area 51 FPS game too for Midway. As for Red Faction, I only liked the 1st game. Well, at least until the mercenaries are introduced...Music is great though. Man 2001 was a great year for FPS games: Halo CE, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Aliens Vs Predator 2, Red Faction, Operation Flashpoint Cold War Crisis, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. Speaking of AVP, might make for a good review video considering the 1st FPS released on Atari Jaguar and we haven't had a new one since 2010's. And wait, 2001 FPS games are considered "boomer" shooters now too?
*EXCELLENT* material there, man! Haven't played Armageddon, so can't comment on that, but otherwise your dissections of each of the other games were *(almost)* spot on! . Now, I *do take issue* with one particular segment of your review, however... Namely, your *criticisms* of some of *Guerilla's story aspects.* They are misguided. Bear with me: ... The game only took 2 - 2.5 years *(reportedly...)* to develop... *AT MOST...* By any means and standards, that's *NOT MUCH TIME* for a game of RF:G's calibre. If we have to be perfectly fair, what they actually managed to put out for that time period, as measured by the amount of in-game content is already *exceeding expectations* . The game's *BIG* , offers *A LOT* of various means of fun gameplay and enjoyment *(which you were kind enough to fully elaborate! :) )* , and has a satisfyingly and sufficiently long story arc. For the amount of development time, especially for back in those days, that was *HUGE.* ... And now, going back to that remark about the story... It just so happened that *THE LORE* had to take on the unfortunate role of *"that-ONE-thing-that-HAS-to-be- RUSHED / CUT / SACRIFICED"* , in order to actually *complete the game on time!* As a result, we end up with a story and participating characters that are *NOWHERE-near completely fleshed out and finalized* , due to said *time / development constraints.* As a result, we end up with *some* plot points that don't *(seem to)* make sense, *ESPECIALLY if you're primarly focused on the game's MANY other, and MORE attractive aspects... :)* ... And now here's the key moment: They don't *"seem to"* make sense, but ... *they actually DO* ... *IF you follow* the thread CLOSELY and read up on the lore within the Guerilla Handbook. (no, you *don't even need the wiki* ...) The *"marauders thingy doo-doo"* that you lament also happens to fall within this category of *"woah, woah, woah... wait... WHAT?"* aspects of the story. ... *MY take?* It all actually *made perfect sense* to me, and *I even anticipated it* to some degree. I *loved it* , actually! :) It just *fit* snugly within the narrative, especially combined with the chain of events that transpired in the previous games. But, like I already said, I was trying to really get *immersed* into the entire story + atmosphere + narrative, so I was able to *get* it. . Personally I *could* criticize *other* aspects of the story and gameplay/missions progression, but *I'd rather NOT...* .. BECAUSE : 1) Game is awesome as it is, and a rare gem that deserves *(almost)* only glory and praise! 2) As already said, I recognize that whatever errors there are in the game, they are *(almost)* entirely due to rushing / lack of time on the devs' part. .
I really enjoyed this review, and the games (1 and 3, I skipped the rest), but as a vidual artist I want to give you so feedbwck on this video's thumbnail style. It's... not conveying any information. Just splashes of color. A previous iteration of this artstyle at least had more defined silhouettes because there were drop shadows and no textures, here there's way more texture and visual noise and the silhouettes are barely readable. The thumbnails are just a soup of colors. If not for the title I wouldn't have guessed that you're covering a game I'm very excited about right now. I checked more of these and they all have this problem. Yes, they are distinct, but convey next to nothing about what's in the video. This could be hurting your click-through rate from impressions, IDK. Take care man!
It's criminal why no other dev uses destruction and physics objects so extensively as RFG. Open world games have stagnated so much, they could do better with a bit of mayham
For those who want to play Red Faction 1, there's a mod that puts the stuff back from the PS2 version. There's also a mod that recreates the N-Gage version. Also, you can buy Red Faction 1 and 2 on PS4, which are the PS2 versions emulated and with trophies.
I have discovered that Red Faction is NOT a real time strategy game with destructible environments. I somehow merged Red Faction and... Red Alert? In my mind for like a decade now. Go figure.

The stuff around 25:00 about their facade becoming their perceived "culture" over the course of a very long time and several generations has happened countless times in real life. See indigenous peoples of various colonized lands hiding behind being "converted" to whatever religion to avoid worse persecution, only to eventually think and feel that the religion in question is a deep and important part about their cultural identity and largely always has been. That's just ome example and YES I cam see how it's different, but not overly so. Mot sure what the timeline for these games looks like, but being that you mentioned a few hundred years I think it would do well to consider that to be more than long enough for initial intentions to fade into obscurity.
Just so you don't work yourself to death. A way to make a complete series review without diminishing views, could probably be achieved if you alternate between a few different series for your video releases. But keep it up! I love your videos and I think you produce great reviews.

Always had a soft spot for RF. And Guerilla is fun to this day. From the era where you could 100% an open world game in under 20 hours.
Yea i bought it twice bc i wanted to have it on both platforms ps4 and switch, its a great game and stil holds up i think
If you 100%-ed Guerilla in under 20 hours, then you didn't really 100% it.
Even on the easiest setting, it will take you more than 50.
I too sometimes think of the enemy soldier, who is trained and has lived their whole lives, up until the point they run into the protagonist and get domed in a fraction of a second.
In the remarsterd version we say faction of a second

First time viewer. Love that you're willing to come right out and identify working-class ideology in addition to game elements. King shit energy.
All this talk about red factions EDF has me Jonesing for some kbash content about the EDF games. That's some real wild shit
I played the red faction guerilla demo for endless hours. The destruction was so fun and then when I finally got the full game I was so happy to learn that's the game
Was slightly disappointed though that the demo was basically the best mission on the game
I too played the demo for hours 😂 was so good
5:16 -- If that is considered as "mildly harassing", I don't wanna know what KBash did to the theater kid back in high school
Got some serious Blast Corps vibes when you started plowing through buildings in a truck.
And of course the most important part of this series' legacy: being the inspiration for the song Space Asshole
I love how I can have absolutely no interest in the games you're talking about but still be totally ready to watch the shit out of the video anyways lol. Keep up the great work brother
Your script is just too good every single video, please never stop. I'll watch every time.
For something in a similar genre, try the Conduit and Conduit 2 on the Wii. Take Halo and make it all about alien conspiracy theories. It's great.
Those games were odd but enjoyable experiences.
In RF2 molov and his team is not red faction, they are supersoilders made by sopot who turned on him and were helping red faction take sopot down

if you like dead fps franchises you could do a video on resistance
wait a second... do *Volition* have *anything* to do with the *Just Cause* games?? (like you mention in this vid description?)
Wasn't aware... O_o
I always confused Red Faction with Red Alert

Tried guerrilla at a friends house and got addicted to the multiplayer like crack. He woke up the next day to me still playing bloodshot eyes and all.
Almost missed this video, Im subbed and have the bell on and still didn't get a notif or see this in recommended until today. Damn youtube sucks lol
Didn't expect a KBash video about a shooter but I am here for it! I actually really enjoyed this series. Great video!
Man Red Faction 1 just kinda made me sad with how it's still relevant and probably will be forever
i'm 100% uninterested in the FPS genre outside of Doom or a couple outliers (Vomitoreum, Cultic) but i'll take a new KBash upload on whatever game it is. Unless he does a video on sports games than i'm out lol.
My dear Kenneth Bashory, whatever will you get up to next? Timesplitters?
"Segue" is pronounced "Segway."

Can you do the rest of God of War series? For the hadheld + Ascension alongside with the 2 soft rebooted ones
Armageddon and SR4 are what happens when Volition get bored of working on the same project but aren't allowed to make a new IP.
Loved making tunnels on multiplayer used to burrow my way across the map on the level with the 2 bunkers opposite each other 😅
great vid kbash it's fun seeing a vid from you that's out of your norm. also it's interesting to think about all these shooters that had to release in HL's shadow while trying to up the ante to make it it's own unique take in the genre

um... no one is interested in this comment, really? :(
Well... why do I even bother! :(
I stand by that red faction deserves to be remade as a pure immersive sim.
A single weapon doesn't make Armageddon a good game, far from it.
this game is riding the linear grey shooter trend so hard it deserved to fail.
Isn't that the whole series except guerilla
@Morkgin the first two games weren't lifeless grey shooters
@@ShoXwavee well they are not grey but brown
RF1 is how elon musk treats workers if he could get away with it.

Open world games have stagnated so much, they could do better with a bit of mayham
Wasn’t Crackdown supposed to do that too? Unfortunately, I heard the third game didn’t do too well
Armageddon was just mid as hell. One gun doesn't save a game lol
the vehicle sections are an homage to the descent series, which volition made previously.
Heyyy someone else knows about Descent! I remember playing the first game in my school’s computer lab in 8th grade. Freaking loved that game
descent likers unite
fun fact, red faction was originally descent 4, but they had to change the name due to interplay holding the publishing rights for the descent series.
Playing knights in the nightmare currently

Bold of you to assume I could get a mortgage
It's just you and me, miner!
the first one was a masterpiece. i still remember tunneling in pvp in steal the suitcase for funsies against bots
Hatsune Mikus CRACK HOUSE!
I have discovered that Red Faction is NOT a real time strategy game with destructible environments.
I somehow merged Red Faction and... Red Alert? In my mind for like a decade now.
Go figure.
I remember really enjoying Armageddon's 'horde mode' purely using the magnet gun. I never played the other games!
Yeah its a shame he didn't talk about any of the multiplayer modes they were quite fun
Kbash doing boomer shooters now? Ayo?! 3D Realms trilogy when?
Red Faction 1,2 and Guerilla can be bought and played on PS3,4,or5. Red Faction Armageddon can be bought and played on Xbox one or series x|s via backwards compatibility
someone buy this man a hat

Agree
Cuban Immigrant here. I can attest 👍🏽
this!
It already stopped with Half Life
@@morkgin2459 I did clarify "on or before". Kbash referred to Red Faction as a boomer shooter and it came out in 2001.
I have pretty fond memories of playing this on my PS2 way back in the day. I was a massive Half Life fan so I thought it was pretty fun. I never touched the 2nd one, and I kind of just messed around with the 3rd one for a few hours and dropped the series forever.
I hated Armageddon even after playing it. It started boring, played boring, ended boring, and I didn't get that much use out of the destructibility.
35:51 Alright, well now that I heard the Metro 2033 theme in the background you gotta review the series. Please.
Did...did you just quote "Darkplace" in the year of our lord 2023?
Nice.
Hey... wait a second. THIS ISNT A TRILOGY REVIEW!
Armageddon putting the environment in caves was just a bafflingly bad decision
Genuinely loved my time with Armageddon, but guerilla is absolutely timeless
heh yea...crazy...that marstribalizm

As a Canadian from Ontario I greatly appreciate comments about Ontario.
God, I love Red Faction. Its such a jank ass fucking franchise.
I didn't even know Red Faction had 3 games, let alone was an FPS. I only knew about Guerilla.
4*
I really wish they'd make another game with shitty Ps2 graphics
Pro Red Faction when, Civvi-
Oh, wait, wrong channel.
Red Faction 2s squad introduction walked so Killzone 1 could run
I feel a guy with hair that lush, who also has a wife, probably or has least tried pegging once.
I saw a clip of the third one and was like " I DO know someone who played Red Faction" lol
So what your saying is the first red fraction is time cop the movie the video game.
Ant watch you in a minute man great video man
Need to see a Killzone retrospective after seeing how you took these games apart.
I don’t have a mortgage. The economy is tough for my generation… 😢
Im "the guy" who played red faction
You heard him, Civvie. The glove has been slapped.
:)
The villain's voice actor sounds so familiar
Alias is up there with Fayt Leingod for on the nose names.
My mortgage is going quite well thank you
Seen a sudden urge in red faction content lately, nice to see this series get some love
10:33 Good to see another Garth Marenghi appreciater
