  • Mitzi Bolaños explains how dogs are individuals, not defined by their breed, looks, past, or even how they’re raised. This is evident by the many victims of dogfighting, mainly pit bulls, who have become therapy dogs. When we focus on the heart of the issue-that people abuse dogs-and realize that like humans, dogs cannot be labeled by how they look, we’ll be one step closer to safer communities. Even with the odds stacked against them-with unfounded fears perpetuated by the media-these dogs give us a daily lesson in forgiveness, starting over, and unconditional love.
    Mitzi Bolaños is an animal rights attorney and advocate, currently serving as the Executive Director of StubbyDog. Growing up in Miami-Dade County where pit bull type dogs have been banned since the 1980s, Mitzi initially knew very little about these dogs. After graduating from law school at Florida International University, she moved to New Orleans. While volunteering at the Louisiana SPCA, Mitzi met Bubba, a pit bull type dog who wanted nothing more than affection (and maybe a treat or two). She knew right away that he was meant to be in her life.

    Bubba started Mitzi on a path working for breed equality, and eventually led her to Portland, Oregon to pursue an advanced degree in Animal Law at Lewis & Clark Law School. Now, they take on breed discrimination together and help spread the message that pit bull type dogs are loving family companions. Mitzi and Bubba currently live in Anchorage, Alaska where he is the proud big brother to two other rescued pups.

    Pits do vary greatly but then again they are mixed (and many are bred/raised/kept in bad situations). It sounds like she is suggesting that breed specific traits do not exist. Anyone that has handled a lot of different dog breeds knows breed traits (i.e. hunting, guarding, etc...) do in fact exist.

    • @apbt067
      @apbt067 2 года назад +2

      Breeds have certain traits because they were bred for those traits for there intended jobs. But those traits also vary from dog to dog within the breed of dog. If you know your stuff you would know that true APBTs don’t vary anymore than any other breed of dog. They all have certain standards and characteristics to be within for there breed. FYI all dogs are mixed, it takes 2 diff breeds being bred to produce another so called breed. Same uneducated people say things like apbt are mixes. I’m sure you would think a American bulldog was a apbt if you seen one same as the rest of the uneducated in k9s. Mislabeling is responsible for at least half of the statistics for apbts.

      @@apbt067 "Pit Bulls" refer to a variety of dogs that roughly look like APBTs and often do have mixed heritage. The shelters are full of them and euthanize approximately 1 mil every year. American Pit Bull Terriers are a breed and have a specific standard. Huge difference.

    this is nonsense. it's nonsense to assert that a racehorse is not inclined to want to run . It's nonsense to say a bloodhound does not naturally sniff smells. Dog breeds were developed over generations (sometimes hundreds or thousands of years) for certain characteristics. A pitbull is a breed of dog unlike a Cocker Spaniel or Bichon Frise' .

      "Pitbull" isn't a dog breed. It is an umbrella term for dogs who share a similar physical appearance. They range in temperament, personality, and skills. People like you are the problem.

    • @TonyWadkins
      @TonyWadkins 5 лет назад +3

      Briana,
      Trying to hide the dog behind the breed misidentification umbrella is ridiculous. These dogs share very common traits that anyone with any common sense can identify.
      The blood of the disfigured and dead children is on your hands for promoting this false sense of secuity.

      All dogs naturally sniff smells - that is their most important sense. Tracking down smells is Mumford's favorite thing to do - he is an American Staffordshire Terrier, one of the "pit bull" breeds. There is an ongoing program, sponsored by Animal Farm Foundation, to train rescued "pit bulls" for drug detection and tracking and donating the dogs to police agencies. Besides their detection use, many of these are also used for community outreach.

    All great information but yet you use pit bull continually through out the video. "pit bull" is a slang term not a breed. Why list all the proper facts and then use "pit bull"? This myth does not help,
    Advocacy should move society forward. To do so, we must advocate with facts and not myths. There Is No Benefit to Focusing on Fiction Over Fact.
    Now that we know better, we have an obligation to consider the way we communicate on behalf of the dogs and the information we’re sharing. Dogs are depending on us to stop adding to their problems by recycling old content that has no basis in science.
    TRUTH; "Pit Bull" is a slang term not a breed - there is a large variety of dogs similar in appearance with mixed or unknown origin - they are "mutts". "Stop feeding the myth machine"!

      The AKC does not recognize a breed called pit bull. The official breed name is American Staffordshire Terrier. Pit bull usually refers to a general type of physical conformation, not DNA. As always, dogs are individuals; as Mitzi says, even litter mates can have very different personalities.

    • @TheWolfspirit22

      There is a breed a called American pit bull terrier.

    • @mumfordthepitbull4581
      @mumfordthepitbull4581 4 года назад

      @@TheWolfspirit22 The American Pit Bull Terrier is registered with the United Kennel Club. When people wanted to register them with the AKC they branched a breeding line off of the APBT and called it Staffordshire Terrier, and then later added American to the name.

    • @mumfordthepitbull4581
      @mumfordthepitbull4581 4 года назад +3

      It is appropriate for her to say "pit bull" because she is talking about all dogs that an animal control officer might identify as "pit bull" based on physical appearance,
      regardless of whether it is a purebred APBT, American Staffordshire Terrier, several other pure breeds, or a random mixed breed that happens to physically resemble one of these breeds.
