Richmond, Virginia: Visiting America's Most Historic Church / Exploring Downtown & Capital Building
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 мар 2022
- We began this adventure in Charleston, WV in a major snowstorm. We drove across the Appalachians in the ice and snow, finally arriving in chilly Richmond, VA hours later. The next day was sunny, but cold. I visited historic St John's Church, where Patrick Henry gave is inspirational "Give me liberty or give me death!" to an audience that included George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It was enough to motivate the colonists to form their own army, with the intent on breaking free from England. I also explored downtown, and together we visited the state capital building.
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Governor's Inn

Love seeing my city showcased. However it should be noted, the james runs into the Chesapeake bay not the Mississippi. Also that was a portrait of Governor Ralph Northam. He was governor just before Youngkin.
Best yet......drive was beautiful and Richmond is very interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for that! :)
So beautifull the snow☃. Richmond, city with a rich history..I love that.
While y'all were driving in the beautiful snow, my stomach was in knots. Especially on those narrow back roads. What an adventure.
When you toured the church, a wave of appreciation to those men washed over me. People need to visit Richmond. I've ever been but would love to
Like others said, this was one of your best videos. I enjoyed the chit chat instead of the music. You do know that you seem like a friend to your regular viewers.
Interesting history. The church seems preserved and still in use. The south considers 50 degrees as extremely cold.
We spent a little over a year in cold ass Richmond and we hated it. They have some nice parks and have some historic places to see, but all the snow is what I remember the most.
I have been on those capital grounds but it never occurred to me to go inside
Born and raised in Virginia. That historic church was very impressive on the inside. The chandeliers and stained glass windows are so beautiful. What an incredible road trip, thanks for sharing!
That church was amazing. You could feel the ghosts of the past in there.
Nicole is all riled up.
I was told my great great etc grandfather was Patrick Henry on my mother's side. My grandmothers maiden name was Henry.
Good morning, just watched this for the first time. If you ever get back to Richmond you must do it during the summer and visit the church on a Sunday. Between Memorial and Labor Days there are reenactments of the Virginia convention the speech was given at. It last about an hour with both arguments given and of course the grand finale. The actors sit in the church pew while the program is going on and speak from those spots. George Washington sat directly behind me and John Henry Lee was a couple of rows in front. There are videos available on youtube of the reenactment. Check it out, it is well worth it.
That sounds amazing.
Virginia is full of our early history plus our heritage. We lived in Virginia in mid 60's to 70. Two of our children born there in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. We loved the naval experience as well. Always something to see there..Gen McArthur museum. Moses Myers House, gorgeous botanical gardens, naval bases. RB and DB, conyers, ga
I have quite a few friends born in the same hospital as your kids. I love the Tidewater area. I’m in Virginia Beach.
I enjoyed your drive back from WV. I lived in Richmond from 1987-1994. Please, come back for another visit.
Australian Siri has you on a walkabout in the outback!!!!
Loved the drive in the snow! I grew up in the southern part of WV. Six inches of snow was kind of typical for winters there, but once in a while, we would get up to 3 feet of snow. Sledding was epic when I was a kid…always a big hill somewhere to sled down. So beautiful! And I loved the tour of Richmond. I’ve been past Richmond, but never ventured downtown. The church was beautiful! This makes me want to take a Richmond tour. Thanks for the wonderful videos! 😀
Thank you for the kind words, Pam! That West Virginia drive through the Appalachians was among the most beautiful I have ever driven.
2 of my best friends were married to each other in Saint John's church in Richmond. Beautiful!
Loved that church. You could feel the history.
I am from Beckley, WV when you drove from Charleston, WV to Richmond, VA. You came through Beckley.
very cool! Love these videos, and just across your channel. Great stuff!
Thank you for the kind words!
This was the best 👌 video of Richmond VA I ever seen absolutely 💯 Amazing I lived in Richmond all my life and this was the first time I've seen the inside of the St Pauls Church ⛪️ Very nice ride thoroughly enjoyed it ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome!
I love the relationship that you and your wife have you guys need your own Television show loved riding with u from West Virginia to Richmond this was awesome 👌 ❤awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖 ❤️ 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖 ❤️.
Your Richmond trip/commentary is one of your best. St. John's Church; state Capitol and Capitol Square; the canal area; Confederate White House--you covered a lot in a short time. Richmond is such an under-rated city--I absolutely love the place!
I thought the city was great! :)
Love this! ❤️
Thanks Tasos!! :)
Good video I like the womb of America take.
I also enjoyed your narration of the road trip to Richmond definitely keep that in your montage.
Thank you! :)
That drive in the snow was nothing. You gotta come try some winter driving in Michigan. And temps in the 40s are awesome! Invigorating! Videos are awesome. Learning a lot.
Love the video. I was born & raised in Va. Back in the 80's I was an ambulance attendant for RVA. I know that city well. 12:58 the blds were old tobacco warehouses. That area was called Tobacco Row. The El. had Dock St. underneath it. We used to call that "Little Chiago". 13:59 you're in Manchester. That used to be an independent city from RVA. When RVA annexed it, they called "Dog Town". They used to think that the residents of Manchester were dogs. 14:26 The 14th St. Mayos Bridge. 31:20 Looks like Church Hill. In the 80's it was a dump & a high crime & murder area. I knew one of the investors & they started to buy up all the houses & refurb them. I guess they were trying to restore Church Hill back to its former glory days. 30:40 MCV/VCU hospital. There used to be a bunch of hospitals in that area, they merged them all into one. Thanks for sharing, now you got me homesick. LOL.
Thank you for the great comment. I really enjoyed Richmond, especially it's amazing history. It was thrilling to be inside that church, in the same spot that so many greats in our history was once in.
Also Virginia Union University. Richmond Community Hospital, the one and only Hospital in the state for African Americans, it now is a building on the grounds of Virginia Union University. Virginia Union is a school started by the Black Baptists in the State Virginia. The first African slaves landed in Jamestown Va not to far down the river in 1619.
those 2 sections of side road off the interstate looks like the bypass to the 2 toll plazas on I-64. You must have avoid toll option turned on on your Navigation App I assume.
Yeah, I try to avoid them. 😬
The James River exits into the Chesapeake Bay, not the Mississippi
The purpose of the Kanawha Canal was to link with the Kanawha River to the Ohio River, then on to the Mississippi River. That's what I referencing. Washington wanted a water route to the west.
My two best friends live up there now, and I love taking a little 45 minute drive up there. RVA is a fantastic city if you’re into music and art.
Greetings from Seoul, South Korea I lived in Virginia a decade ago and your video reminds me of lots of things I touched upon there. Also i am enjoying other videos you posted. You are such an enchanting storyteller as well as a genuine adventurer. I'd like to invite you to come to Korea coz here are lots of stories you might be fascinated with. As a native Korean citizen i can provide a nice van at least on which you can explore every corner of this far side of the globe.
I love living here in Virginia. We have amazing history. Personally, I think you should visit Virginia Beach. The first permanent English settlers landed here and then went to Jamestown. We’re also near the world’s largest Navy Base in Norfolk. In Norfolk you can eat at Doumar’s and enjoy an ice cream cone. They are made on the world’s first waffle cone machine.
Heading there this fall. :)
@@JoeandNicsRoadTripI’d skip Doumar’s. It’s low grade drive thru food at best
Churches have graveyards, cemeteries are not by a church, just a little information.
Yes, it's been explained to me. :)
Trust me after this winter I’m sick and tired of it lol. But I understand if you don’t see it often it’s fun. I love WV it’s so beautiful. Do yourself a favor when you’re out of the snow belt, where they use salt on the roads, wash the underneath your car real good to get rid of the road salts.
Good idea keyup, thanks for the advice. Trust me, I'm sick of the cold as well. Ready for it to be warm.
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip I’m right there with you, warm weather come on down now lol.
@keyup2626 I’m in Philadelphia right now and it’s actually warm here. Low 70’s! Very pleasant. I had been prepping myself to freeze my butt off here.
The James River does not go into the Mississippi River. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean! You’re way far away from ole Miss.
Yes, the James River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The fall line at Richmond is where the James falls off of the Piedmont onto the Coastal Plain and becomes a tidal river. The Kanawha (Kuh-na'-wuh) River flows into the Mississippi via the Ohio River.
Yeah, to add to this there was a _plan_ to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico through waterways, know as the James River and Kanawha Canal. The James River served as the waterway to the Atlantic and the Kanawha River served as the waterway to the Gulf. Eventually, they were going to connect the two through the terrain of the Allegheny Mountains, but they initially built canals just to bypass rough parts of each river and used overland methods to get between them (the James River and Kanawha Turnpike). But before they could finish a waterway to connect the rivers, trains became the dominant form of transportation and the canal was ultimately abandoned.
I would get a new Siri… I can’t stop laughing because the interstate goes straight to Richmond
Re: Little roads. I abhor and detest interstates and avoid them at all costs. But there are times there are no options. On interstates you make time, but see nothing. The same FF joints, same gas stations, same motels at exits. Miss a turn and have to go miles and miles before you can turn around. On old roads you pass through towns, see things. When I travel I'm in no hurry. I made an around the country trip in '19 from WV to NY, to Colorado and back (about 19 states) and on interstates only a fraction of the time. I would do it again in a heart beat.
You're totally right.
👍👍👍
Australian Siri is the best Siri ;)
You really should spend two or three days in Richmond. You missed the Museum of the Confederacy, Hollywood Cemetery and Carytown, the artsy, Bohemian part of the city. Great shopping. Also, Shockoe Bottom, the old tobacco warehouse section, now home of great nightlife.
Did you get goose bumps in St. John's...I would have!
I'm not sure the story on that cross, if it's original or not. But I can assure you it was not placed in Richmond in 1609. That was the year they founded the Jamestown colony, much further down river near present day Williamsburg. So, if that cross is original, it was moved there from Jamestown. But, it's also likely that it's a newer cross meant to commemorate the founding of the Jamestown colony in 1609.
The cross was originally placed at the fall line of the James River in 1607 by Christopher Newport and John Smith to claim the territory for King James I. They then traveled up the James to where they founded Jamestown the same year. Get your facts straight.
Richmond , VA was the capital of the Confederate States of America. Robert E. Lee and the Confederates fought desperately against Ulysses Grant and the Union Army to hold on to Richmond at the end of the Civil War. Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Court House outside of Petersburg, VA
now the iconic statue of Lee and his horse on Monument Ave are no more. I walked around that statue hundreds of times in the 40's and 50's never contemplating that Lee was a traitor to the Union and went against his oath to the Union. If he had remained true to the Union thousands of lives would have been saved. Just my opinion. He was considered a God to the Virginians when I was growing up.
Oil has that price according to your Dollar
because when your dollar goes up in price, we pay others who don't have dollars
4 liters will cost about 7.22 dollars
so if you think your politicians decide the price
then it doesn't fit
it is also oil countries that determine how much supply of oil
it's the same with whiskey, those who make them decide how many bottles will be on offer, but they can't make it go around
(Make Money)
The painting wasn’t Youngkin. That was Ralph Northam. He was the last governor before Youngkin.
Richmond was called Shoqwohana by Powhatan Nation
I live in WV and I wouldn’t like driving in that weather… from Charleston it is a straight shot on I-64 to Richmond… some way Siriput you off on a side road, I think I recognize it
These silent, music segments are very boring. Your comments are very valuable as it adds information, life and entertainment. I usually skip the music segments. Thanks for all the scenery and entertainment. I am going to watch all your videos
Check out Charlottesville VA.
He should definitely check out williamsburg VA
I love the Appalachians
Your amazing countries weather always baffles me when compared to UK weather. Almost everybody would agree the USA has better weather than the UK like northerly cities like new york an chicago get 100 degree weather in summer but also gets sometimes several feet of snow in winter. In the UK im in the north west and we haven't had over 2 inches of snow in one go for over a decade and if a summer day exceeds 80 degrees then people start dying an moaning its too hot an its a heatwave if it's hot for over 3 days running haha. Yous even get snow in desert cities like Phoenix I think ive seen. I'd still rather be in your country with ye wacky weather any day over grey an boring england
The oldest continuously operating church in the United States is in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's very important to the history of conquests that dominated North America since the first Europeans arrived.
You're right. I visited it!
Snow storm X..
Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Broad Street main historic street.
Who owns Federal Reserve?
Have you been to Williamsburg
They destroyed beautiful Monument Ave. Nothing worth seeing there anymore..
That was the last governor, Northam's, painting. youngkin's is not up yet. Tim kaine is a US senator from Virginia, unfortunately, and used to be Mayor of Richmond.
Tim Kaine's claim to fame was that he was Hilary's vice presidential running mate. His debate with Mike Pence during the 2016 election made me embarrassed to be a Virginian.
You’re blessed to have Kaine as your senator and Warner.
I would have stayed another night and avoided driving in snow.
You definitley should of delayed your trip to richmond & spent another day in W.V & gave more back snow roads
I take back what I said about Siri… she took you off the interstate to avoid the toll booth
I'm an independent so I think I'm in a position to ask why do you always make political comments about Joe Biden it's not necessary you have a good show run your show and continue and I'll continue to watch and get other people to watch but why all of these comments about Joe Biden I never heard you say anything negative about Donald Trump who's a thief and oh by the way I'm an independent.
That bothers me as well.
Donald Trump is a patriot
You need to stop listening I suppose .What did trump steal from you specifically
@@williamowsley9771 stop listening
Yes. I really like your channel but the Joe Biden remarks are uncalled for. It's a turn off.
I'm disappointed. Take your MAGA and drive to Hawaii.
You're right. Hawaii needs a good dose of MAGA.
