Time example of, 'music is the universal language, " even without understanding the language, the clarity, the passion, the melody lifts us up, into a higher place then we were before the music starts to play. This music makes for many recuerdos, echoing in our hearts.

Meglepően szép szövegkiejtés a kórus részéről. Az egyik legszebb előadás a műből! Magyarul szól, magyar nyelvet értő átélessel! A szólista szép hangon deklamál, de többet lehetett volna a kottából kinézve, életszerűbb szenvedélyességgel, kiállásában, Simándy mindenek feletti megszállottságával, egyenes derékkal, temperamentummal, a legmagasabb hangot is biztos megszólaltatással előadva. A zenekar gyönyörű hangzása, szólói megindítóan szép tónusúak, megformáltak.

    1. When great King David, sorely afflicted-
Even by friends abused and ill treated-
    Bitterly cried his heart's desolation,
Then he began to pray to the Lord God:
    2. "O God, my Lord, I pray Thee to hear me!
Turn back Thine eyes upon me, Thy servant!
Leave me no longer in my bereftness!
My heart within me weeps deepest anguish!
    3. Had I but wings-a dove's or an eagle's-
I would have flown away from my troubles,
Far from the tempest I would take shelter,
Flee from my foes and rest in the deep desert.
    4. Cry to the Lord, my soul and my thinking!
Cast on Him all your cares and depressions-
Trust in the Lord, your prayers He will answer:
He will not suffer His own to be cast down."

The Hungarian diction of the choir is absolutely stunning. This is what caught my ears first.

A világhírű magyar Kodály Zoltán ezzel a művével tette nyilvánvalóvá álláspontját a Magyarországot megcsonkító igazságtalan trianoni békediktátumról.

I've just seen your comment. It's so nice to hear :) Especially because we were 3 Hungarians in the choir, so we were also the language coaches. We were so proud of them, they did an amazing job!

I can't understand Hungarian but no matter, absolutely love this work, one of my favourites for chorus and orchestra and a 20th c. masterpiece The best conductor I've heard so far was Istvan Kertesz on a recording from the late 60's but that's not surprising as he excelled at everything he conducted.

For me, the most spine-chilling passage is the coda, beginning at 21:27:
    Szent Dávid hírta az zsoltárkönyvben
St. David wrote, in the Book of Psalms,
    Ötvenötödik dïcséretében
    in his Fifty-fifth, praise
    Melyből az hívek keserűségben
For the faithful, who are in bitterness,
    Vígásztalásért szörzék így versékben
To console their sorrows, he cast them into verse.
This sounds like ancient Hungarian chant, and is stylistically close to the two-part folk songs for children, which I’ve worked with in childrens’ choirs.
There are simply no words to describe this passage.

Cause hungarian language is quite hard for not native speakers, and quite a few foreign tenors and choirs can sing it well because of it. Though this is probably one of the best works of all time, or at least of all the 20th century.

12:30 onwards, wonderful, powerful, folding and flowing like linen in a strong breeze. Then harp and strings and the wind trickles and ebbs and spins through the cloth. István Kovácsházi, with an amazing tenor and his higher tones were silkily spun. The Baritones were so rare and resounding, special baritones who never receive their rightful diva status. A full tapestry woven for the ear in space time we can hear.
