Interesting little side story to this. For the Colorado Avalanche's inaugural game of the 95/96 season, their first in Denver at McNichols arena, they passed out collectors item tickets with a little mounting plaque to all the attendees of the game. The illustrated picture on that ticket portrays a hockey goalie busting out of a mountain. When the graphic artist was drawing the picture for this ticket he requested a picture of an NHL goalie as model for the picture. The General Manager of the Avalanche, Pierre Lacroix, was an agent before he was a manager and Patrick Roy had been one of his clients. Therefore he just happened to have a picture of Patrick Roy and gave the artist that picture to use. As a result the goalie on this ticket looks like Patrick Roy and the uniform he's wearing looks more like a Montreal Canadiens sweater than a Colorado Avalanche one...but the inaugural game was obviously months before Roy was actually traded to the Avalanche. Talk about a crazy coincidence.
If you want to see what the ticket looked like, just do a G***le image search on these words: "Colorado Avalanche inaugural game ticket 1995" (if I attach an external link or use the G-word I find that the post tends to disappear). Fittingly enough, their first game was against the Red Wings...and the Avalanche won.
@@arkwill14 The Red Wings played a role in this whole story that season; they were the Avalanche's 1st opponent in their 1st home game in the 1st NHL game played in Denver in 13 years. The Red Wings were the team that scored 9 goals on Patrick Roy in his final game with Montreal before he was traded to Colorado just days later. And it was the Red Wings who faced Roy & the Avalanche in the conference final, with Colorado defeating Detroit in 6 games and Patrick Roy earning a measure of revenge against the Red Wings in the process.
Thats insane haha one of my buddies called me up randomly saying there was an Avs ticket at the thrift store he’d seen and asked if I wanted it. I rushed over and so happened to be this particular one your talking about. In its holding plaque, bought it for like 4 bucks. As I read this I just looked at it and yea you’re damn right haha never knew the in depth story about it. But definitely glad I ended up getting it!
As a Red Wings fan, congrats to the Avs on winning the 2022 stanley cup. I was cheering for Colorado in the Cup Finals. I remember the Avs & Wings rivalry. the Claude Lemieux hit on Kris Draper is what kicked started the long rivalry between the Avs & Wings.
Speaking of "one-sided trades"...Avalanche fans shouldn't forget the Eric Lindros trade that occurred a few years before the move to Colorado. Regarded as the best prospect, Lindros was drafted but didn't want to play for the Nordiques. The resulting blockbuster trade that sent him to Philadelphia, and subsequent trades and picks gained from that initial trade, would account for no less than 15 players who helped the Avalanche win the cups in '96, and 2001. And many of the players were very instrumental to winning those cups like Roy, Forsberg, Krupp, Deadmarsh, Tanguay, Keane, C. Lemieux, Blake and Bourque. Colorado would also play in 6 of the next 8 Conference finals after the move. Lindros himself never did win a Stanley Cup for Philadelphia. Now that's a one-sided trade!
I’m right there with you. I moved to Denver in 1995 and have been a fan ever since. I now live in Arizona but will be an Aves fan for life. I’ve watched so much Avalanche RUclips since Sunday that if I wasn’t retired, I would be fired.
My family were huge Nordiques fans, sadly they needed a new arena. Never happened so they relocated and my family were all about the win in Denver since it was their exact same players except for Roy who joined later.
@@stakknation123 Probably not as many as in the 90s but I'm there are some. Battle of Quebec is one of the most underrated rivalry overshadowed by Bruins-Habs and Red Wings-Avs. Even Claude Lemieux said the rivalry between Nordiques-Habs was greater than Red Wings-Avs. I'm sure some fans from Quebec still hates Habs and nowadays you can also see couple fans wearing original Nordiques (baby blue) jersey at Avs games.
No doubt!! We’ll never see anything like Peter the great again!! That dude was an absolute anomaly of an athlete! My all time favorite hockey player to watch!
You left out the best part of the series with the panthers, after letting two first period goals, and getting pelted with plastic rats (twice), Roy told his teammates before the start of the second period “No more rats.” He kept his word and never let the panthers score another goal during the rest of the series in Florida. Game four went into three overtimes and he had to make 63 saves to seal the deal. Still cool videos tho… #GoAvsGo #FoundAWay 🥹😁😆

I definitely miss those days. There was nothing better watching those Avs and Wings teams battle it out.
I will always remember this… that (1995) was the first year of me being a fan of the Avs :) thank you for a 3rd cup Colorado avalanche! 🗻🗻🗻
Next year two peat
Yeah these were the years. Was lucky to witness every CO championship so far for a major sports team.
Hopefully Jokic gets the Nuggets a Championship
🏆🏆🏆 and now the 3x Stanley Cup Champions. 1996-2001-2022 🏔🏒 #GoAvsGo
1996 looked like a long time ago in this video and I guess it was but I swear it seemed like yesterday to me.
The 1996 Avalanche kick ass. 😀👍🏒

Neither did Eric Lindros win a single Stanley Cup Finals game.
Oh and don't forget Mike Ricci.
Yet another classic example of why I think Eric Lindros should have been one of the truly all-time greats, but his own ego got in his own way.
Looking forward to seeing a video on the 2022 Stanley Cup champions as well.
Great memories!
I remember the old avs wings rivalry back in the day. Good times man.

I love this. I remember this day.

Just curious is there a lot of AVS fans in Quebec today?

Burnaby joe is now a hockey god
Kinda forget to talk about our best player back then PETER FORSBERG

I remember when they moved to Colorado I said to my wife that they would win the Stanley Cup BEFORE the start of the season.
Cool
yoooooo
…did this video just forget to mention the Stanley Cup Finals hattrick? A feat not matched since then 25+ years later?
Say what you will the Beezer was an amazing goalie
I was 11 1996, i followed hockey through the newspapers here in sweden, and ofc primetime for hockey cards for me :D
Everyone please thank Mario Tremblay.
that’s when hockey had barely any rules you could hit anyone how ever you want
Avs need to go back to original jersey
I remember the red wings and Colorado had a bad blood bath of a series.
if the team stays in Quebec city, there is no way Montreal trades Roy to the Nordiques
What a waste of plastic to throw those stupid rats on the ice.
Must be fun at party’s.
Nordiqes fans got robbed big time
Any fool can see the Leafs should have won it.

kinda pains me that the nordiques were only a year away from securing their franchise as a cup-winning team. still miss those guys
