    Kikki Danielsson who represented Sweden in 1985 used to be a country star in Nashville - she even has the keys to the city!
    Christer Björkman who represented Sweden in 1992 then went on to organize the Swedish competition and to lead the ESC to a new era. He is now the project leader of the American Song Contest who starts in a couple of weeks.
    Also, since you hardly reacted to ABBA, I hope you know who they are. If not, you are in for a ride there.

    Charlotte Nilsson who won 1999 with Take me to your heaven and later as Charlotte Perelli 2008 sang Hero 8s the same person.
    2009 - Malena Ernman opera singer with La voix is the mother of the young environment activist Greta Thunberg

      Let's add some more.
      1965, not strange that guy won in Sweden, he sang all the six songs at the national qualifier.
      1971, 1972, 1994, same blond singer, Marie Bergman, with Carola (-83, -91, -06) the only person to represent Sweden three times.
      1978, 1981, Björn Skifs, was the first Swede to get to No. 1 at the US billboard list, the very same day that ABBA won in 1974. It is said to be the day the Swedish pop "wonder" started. He did it with "Hooked on a feeling", the song now revived as soundtrack for the movie "Guardians of the galaxy".
      1985, 1999, both the singers originating from the south of Sweden have been doing country music and worked a lot in Tennessee.
      2013, Robin Stjernberg, was one of the song writers for Robin Bengtsson (2017).
      2016, Frans, first got famous as an 8 year old in 2006, singing a song about Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
      I really like your open minded reactions and urge to learn more about the world, keep it up!! :)

    Eurovision is one of the most watched (yearly) tv events. Usually around 200 million viewers worldwide. With a peak of around 600 million viewers in the late 80's. For context, in 2015, Super Bowl had 168 (114 in U.S) million viewers while Eurovision had 200 million. It is definitely the most watched music event.

    As a swede I still really dislike the period at 1999 to 2006 when they would change any songs originally in swedish to english when they perform it for Eurovision, just because they were chasing some idea of mass appeal due to more people understanding english but 90% of the time the song always sounded better in swedish since that was what the song was written for and the only reason it isn't 100% is cause Take Me To Your Heaven did actually manage to win while changing language, but I would still say the song sounds better in the original language.

      I don’t agree at all. Actually understanding what a song is about is a big deal in deciding if you like it or not, and I usually never voted for the ones sung in native languages I didn’t understand.

    • @josephinenilsson1541
      @josephinenilsson1541 2 года назад +1

      And also usually the winning song would switch back to original language if it won: like Charlotte Nilsson won and she started with Take me to your heaven but then switched to Tusen och en natt mid-song which was great. She had already won, and she didn’t have to present it to potential voters but could sing it as originally intended.

    • @Peldms63
      @Peldms63 2 года назад +13

      @@josephinenilsson1541 I wholeheartedly disagree, it not being in a widespread language is not something that has ever stopped good songs from getting high scores or winning Eurovision. Many winners of Eurovision has been in their own languages and in the latest one Italy won in italian with 4 of the top 5 songs all being non-english. If you are dismissing songs simply for not understanding the language, that is on you.

You might have recognised Charlotte again a couple of year later when she had changed her name to Charlotte Perelli. I should also mention that some of the songs in English were in Swedish when they won in Sweden but translated when they competed in ESC, for example Take me to your heaven which in Swedish is called Tusen och en natt, When spirits are calling my name which in Swedish in När vindarna viskar mitt namn, etc. Oh, and Satellit simply means "satellite"! It was first that the artists had to use their original language and then they had to choose a language for a while in the 70s then you did not get it again so it was the period in Swedish during the 80s-90s and then it disappeared and then it was mostly English. Since she as you saw in 2009 is an opera singer but her daughter is better known as it is Greta Tunberg (but more for scolding the UN for not taking the climate seriously)
    But also that very many people think that the best song usually comes second as they have the people voting and then they have "experts" who vote and often they differ a lot between who gets the votes so since the early 90's it is many times where it the best song comes in 2-3 place but with the viewers calling in it is someone that little girls think looks good so they could get many votes for how they looked and not for the song and several got an expensive phone bill for a kid voted 10-50 times (payment number)
    but we have many good artists and there are 15-40 artists who will perform their own song and it must never have been played before anywhere either and if you search on YT by name you will find that most have had a long career in music

    Eurovision isn't a true reflection of real music trends in the various competing countries - it's a world of its own! Some people hate it but I absolutely love it - camp, kitsch, crazy, over the top, unashamedly fun. You should watch the whole competition one year. It's quite the production.

There will be a lot of fast singing but a lot of info that’s basically how it has worked and why it started and a lot of history basically. Regarding the whole of ESC beware of being a bit too much of an “ignorant American” (which you did greats at avoiding in this video) since there is a lot of pride in this competition, this is why I recommend the video explaining a bit of the history :) have a great day
