My friend's family sold their 3rd gen Odyssey when their tires wore down cuz they didn't feel like going through the hassle of getting new wheels and tires. They went on to get a 4th gen Odyssey that they crashed. Then they bought a 4th gen facelift. They like Odysseys
I had this exact van (down to the color) up until a couple months ago. I didn't find an easy way to change these tires out for something cheaper and had to actually replace them a pair at a time while I saved up to replace the old worn out tires. I have a CR-V now.
I always assumed it was a similar situation with some BMWs. You dent one rim and it's cheaper to replace all your rims with aftermarket ones than to buy one factory wheel. Thx for the vid.
I wish I would have known this 2 1/2 years ago. I've had to replace the tires 3 times because they only last 30k miles and they're usually dealer exclusive which will usually run you about $290 per tire not including labor and fees. I bought a brand new set on ebay mounted and balanced on wheels for 275 per tire. There are deals out there you just have to look for them.
When I first clicked on this link I was thinking this video would be another dud. However, the reasoning behind the aftermarket wheels was intriguing! Glad I spent 3 minutes watching this video. Well done.
Hoovies also had the same issue with his Rolls Royce Phantom run flat Michelin tires. He did find a used Rolls Royce wheels that fits instead of going aftermarket.
I've noticed this too, and I probably wouldn't have even wondered why unless I'd read the original article in Car and Driver/MotorTrend/Road and Track when this system was first launched. I suspected it had to do with the PAX system, but I wasn't sure why I still saw Odysseys with the original wheels then. Limiting it to upper trim levels makes sense
this is so weird. this video was suggested to me literally hours after work,l at my tire shop, in which i asked my assistant manager why this honda wheel we had was so odd with a piece of plastic in it. i get it now. i’m rather experienced, and have seen lots of other runflats but this was new to me. same with the wheel diameter.
Kinda funny hearing it called an ‘old minivan’, being a car guy I hate myself for this, but I love how these look. They don’t look dated at all, and they’re 14 years old
I remember when I first started working at a Honda dealership, the first set of pax tires took me almost 6 hours to change. Having to fiddle around with ratchet straps, that stupid entering and grease. Also it would cost to customer over $2000 for a set of four tires so it was easier just to sell aftermarket wheels and tires for cheaper.
The PAX system came on the Phantom and bug Veyron as well. And I believe the Odyssey had a class-action specifically over the PAX system, namely added fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
Real pleasure having to work on these tires. No one in the shop wanted to even try. Glad they only did it for a few years. $300 each and stupid heavy rims.
This is such an interesting video and I did subscribe because I would like more weird quirks. I really thought Odyssey owners were just trying to be cool
This reminds me of my 02 Ford escape, when ever I'd talk to a mechanic to get new tires they'd tell me it was hard to find in that size because they are bigger than a standard sedan tire but smaller than most other suv tires
haven't watched the video, The answer is that the Runflat tyres/wheels combo--> you can't get new tyres for them, so you need different wheels that normal tyres can be mounted on
I remember Hoovie mentioned this with his Rolls Royce. Before then, I used to feel bad for these poor souls trying to make their minivan look *_hip_* (as a minivan dad would say) by putting aftermarket wheels 😅
We changed our Toyota Sienna run flats after we realized we were driving on tires that had huge cuts in them and decided we’re not spending up to $1,000 to fix them we managed to find tires that fit the existing rims tho
It's funny, I actually did notice that with the Honda minivans around here. I always figured that they were some kids first car that he got from his parents and in an attempt to look cool, or at least not like a soccer mom, he bought aftermarket rims for the van. Now I know the truth. I also know not to buy a Honda Odyssey with stock tires and rims.
Does this mean that I should also be on the lookout for Siennas, Quests, and Rolls Royces with after market wheels? Because I certainly will. Pretty interesting video.
Went through that hassle last year had to drive to Whidbey island from federal way a woman had put bmw wheels on hers. 450 for a set,now I have a loose spare in the back.
I'm going to take a guess before this video starts. The run flat tires on these were too expensive so people got rid of the specially wheels and went aftermarket so they can run normal tires.
Michelin introduced the TRX wheel and tire combination in the 70s, and that was pretty much of a flop as well. I had a brand new '82 Mustang GT with them and they were too skinny and expensive for this college kid. Plus, I was racing in SCCA F prepared and wanted a lower and wide stance with a better wheel/tire combination. So, I it was Goodyear NCT and Enkei mesh wheels for me. I don't remember what I did with the old wheels, but I'd imagine I just gave them away or tossed them in the trash. Turns out they are pretty valuable these days. Oh well! For the curious, here's a Wiki link to the TRX system. It was more than just a metric wheel tire combination, but I knew nothing about it back then. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelin_TRX
This is so weird .. the script sounds exactly like Doug Demuro. “This Honda Odyssey is like every other Odyssey on the road today but I’m going to show you a few quirks that make this one different. Yes this Odyssey minivan is special and that’s what this video is about today. You can click the link below to read my article on Oversteer”
Finally, a video I can link people to when they ask the same question. Thank you good sir.
I love this generation Odyssey idk why
This one thing I always peeped but never looked up😂 but no lie a lot of the vans look clean with aftermarket wheels
Doug DeMuro is looking a lot younger and cuter than normal in this video... ;-)
My friend's family sold their 3rd gen Odyssey when their tires wore down cuz they didn't feel like going through the hassle of getting new wheels and tires. They went on to get a 4th gen Odyssey that they crashed. Then they bought a 4th gen facelift. They like Odysseys

Oh yeah, I remember Hoovie talking about this
I always assumed it was a similar situation with some BMWs. You dent one rim and it's cheaper to replace all your rims with aftermarket ones than to buy one factory wheel. Thx for the vid.

It was great meeting you at the Soul Press event Eric. Great video and presentation!

I remember doing a tire rotation on one w run flats and I was caught so off guard by how heavy it was
When I first clicked on this link I was thinking this video would be another dud. However, the reasoning behind the aftermarket wheels was intriguing! Glad I spent 3 minutes watching this video. Well done.

Feels like a low energy Hoovie video, but in all seriousness, good to know more about these runflats!
Interesting video. I had no idea, but now I am noticing more Odyssey vans with aftermarket rims.
this is so weird. this video was suggested to me literally hours after work,l at my tire shop, in which i asked my assistant manager why this honda wheel we had was so odd with a piece of plastic in it. i get it now. i’m rather experienced, and have seen lots of other runflats but this was new to me. same with the wheel diameter.
Oh wow! So THAT'S why so many used Odysseys I've seen for sale online have aftermarket rims. Always thought that was odd. Now I know!
Wasn't aware of that. Learn something new every day.
Kinda funny hearing it called an ‘old minivan’, being a car guy I hate myself for this, but I love how these look. They don’t look dated at all, and they’re 14 years old

All the Honda Odyssey minivans I've seen with aftermarket wheels are usually Lowered and turbocharged.
The PAX system came on the Phantom and bug Veyron as well. And I believe the Odyssey had a class-action specifically over the PAX system, namely added fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
Yo this is so true. 80% of Odyssey’s I see have aftermarket wheels and I never thought of this.
Been wondering about this for years. Now I have an answer. Very informative; good work.
Great content, great presentation skills, looking forward to more from you!
Interesting. I have a 2004 Oddy. I guess I AM LUCKY I DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH THOSE RIM AND TIRE ISSUES.
That's actually really funny; I presumed the wheels were just typically stolen. Good job Autotrader
Real pleasure having to work on these tires. No one in the shop wanted to even try. Glad they only did it for a few years. $300 each and stupid heavy rims.
I LOVE these Odys!
Neat! I never knew about that. I'll have to be on the lookout for this!
I've noticed this. Glad to actually understand why it is a thing
Wow something no one has ever noticed, wondered about or cared about ever.
Yep, we did the same to ours. Hated those tires. Got ‘12 Ody Touring wheels on ours now!
This is such an interesting video and I did subscribe because I would like more weird quirks. I really thought Odyssey owners were just trying to be cool
This is just amazing, never knew anything about it until now
It’s true, I went on Autotrader.com and almost every 2005 - 2007 Honda Odyssey touring did not have the original touring rims.
It’s actually an 18.11” wheel.
Sounds like something Sony would do if they made a car...
This reminds me of my 02 Ford escape, when ever I'd talk to a mechanic to get new tires they'd tell me it was hard to find in that size because they are bigger than a standard sedan tire but smaller than most other suv tires
Ive known this for awhile and I see them pretty often its neat to know why
this eric dude is pretty good
I was actually wondering about this for some time. Just wish some people didn't choose the ugliest wheels to ever be on a minivan.
haven't watched the video,
The answer is that the Runflat tyres/wheels combo--> you can't get new tyres for them, so you need different wheels that normal tyres can be mounted on
No biggie. 17" rims from 2011 odyssey's fit just fine. Make sure to transfer tpms sensors.
I've, noticed it on a few Odysseys, wow!!
West Hills Honda in Washington State offers a whole kit with standard OEM wheels, TPMS sensors and spare.
I remember Hoovie mentioned this with his Rolls Royce. Before then, I used to feel bad for these poor souls trying to make their minivan look *_hip_* (as a minivan dad would say) by putting aftermarket wheels 😅
This was plainly a very good video
I can still purchase PAX tires from my Honda dealer, and I still run PAX tires on my '07 Odyssey.
We learned about the PAX System from Hoovie's Phantom. Not even the Car Wizard could change them!
Weird. Working in a shop for 5 years and I never new this...
I always loved turning away wealthy soccer moms with those. They aren't accustomed to hearing no.
Haha, just yesterday I rolled up next to a newer Odyssey with BBS wheels and I thought, "Weird".
lol right when i saw the title i knew it was the pax runflats.
There's one near me on oz racing wheels and that was confusing until I saw this
This was definitely cool to know about.
I just wanted to race my honda odyssey with after markets. Got 18 inch tsw wheels for a killer deal!
Nobody:
Autotrader: Here's Why So Many Old Honda Minivans Have Aftermarket Wheels
Great video, I just kept thinking Odyssey owners really liked their vans.. enough to buy custom rims!
Hmm you learn something new every day
The PAX wheels did NOT come on Sienna models of any year. It appears that tidbit came from Wikipedia and is totally incorrect.
Omg I always wondered why my old neighbor has dope ass wheels on his van
I miss our old 05 Odyssey
Hoovie already went over this with his rolls Royce
Does this mean that I should also be on the lookout for Siennas, Quests, and Rolls Royces with after market wheels? Because I certainly will. Pretty interesting video.
Huh no joke I always wondered why most minivans seemed to have aftermarket rims.
Luckily, I don't think any Odysseys with PAX were sold in Canada.
*Hoovie's Rolls has aftermarket wheels for the same reason..*
What a good and wholesome video
oh snap this basically had the same system as the phantom. You should feel special lol.
The wierd quirk of this video was that there was no Doug Demuro to be found
Huh. Always wondering about that. Thanks.
Awesome video! Hoovies Garage had the same issue with his phantom lol
It makes me wonder if they made the tire size proprietary just to get the replacement sales and 'drive' customer to dealer
I never knew there was actually a reason, just thought it was a weird phenomenon.
Good to know about those tires
This was a nice video!
Excellent video!
Glad my Odyssey Touring is a 2010. No bullshit tires.
get this man some sunglasses, squinting the whole video... yeeesh
Went through that hassle last year had to drive to Whidbey island from federal way a woman had put bmw wheels on hers. 450 for a set,now I have a loose spare in the back.
Someone get this man some sunglasses
I'm going to take a guess before this video starts. The run flat tires on these were too expensive so people got rid of the specially wheels and went aftermarket so they can run normal tires.
Doug's brother? Is that you?
But the funny thing is, I learned about this from Hoovie, in his Rolls Royce video
Luckily, Canadians did not get the PAX system for Odyssey even Touring model.
Very interesting information
No I’m not going to be on the look out. I’ve already been noticing this. I’ve always been curious.
I worked at an Acura dealer at the time those tires were 600 dollars apiece
Michelin introduced the TRX wheel and tire combination in the 70s, and that was pretty much of a flop as well. That's an interesting quirk and feature
This is so weird .. the script sounds exactly like Doug Demuro.

I fell Doug and his 2 tshirts should have done this video.
I thought this guy was making fun of Doug at first. But it says Auto trader on the channel.
Nice video, but It sounds like Doug DeMuro wrote the script. Especially at 0:43
Awesome information.
Sometimes I like to feed my guinea pigs baby carrots before the spring breeding season
The stock wheels on the other trims are atrociously small so many people change those out too.
I will never buy one of these vans in my life unless I was going to use it as a work vehicle
