Not far behind you in age! Spent most of my youth on a 350X and went through quite a few quads until I landed on the 2006 Honda 450R. I sold that one back in 2011 and really didn’t ride again until I bought a SxS ten years later. It wasn’t long until I said to hell with the SxS and bought an Outlander 1000XXC. I literally had that for two weeks and saw a Yamaha YFZ450R at my local dealership and walked out with it. The next day I ordered a ton from Pete’s website and I’m full fledged back into riding hard again. It’s great having both the sport quad and the trail sofa to rip around on! You can get back into it and you’ll love it! #savesportquads!
BRUH... I didn't know smacking the knuckle worked. Didn't seem obvious that it would. Smacking the bolt sure didn't, so the rubber seals on my factory TRE's got demolished by the separator..
Dang that’s a bummer! I initially smacked the bolt with no results so I watched a few vids for tips and smacking the knuckle was slick. The bulk of comments have said to use a rubber mallet or deadblow next time so I’ll probably do that. Most of them came out in 5-10 solid wacks 😅👍
Hey Pete I got stickers off your website about a month ago and on the paper you said thank for supporting the Chanel-Pete. And it was so awesome thank you
My dad was a front end mechanic for mopar for 22 years. Front end work is push pull bang tug hit. The hammer is the best way to get them free when locked up
☝🥇THIS was the clear game changer for the Raptor! This exact setup, with either Rocket Ron S3's (triple rate) or Elka's ... makes a night and day difference! Additionally... this would be the very first thing anyone who is not only serious about trail riding, but if you are someone who likes to push the limits, this is where its at! Id definitely do all of this FIRST to a stock raptor if I had to do it all over again! Ohh.. AND the steering stabilizer! THATS also a must! Killer work.. KILLER VIDEO Pete! 🔥🔥🔥
Wow! I'm so surprised with the quality of your videos! I'm a new subscriber and this video has been recommended by RUclips and I must say, you kinda woke my interest in sports quads. I always was and still am a huge utility atvs fan, but now you made me interested in buying a sports quad once I saw how fun they are to drive!
I did the same thing with my Raptor. Lowering it makes a massive difference. The linkage I got is an adjustable length so you can adjust how much lower you have it. I think I went down about 1.5 inches with +2 A arms and rear axle. So much better in turns. It's almost impossible to tip on turns.
If you use a pickle fork to separate ball joints and such they typically destroy the boot. Hitting it with a hammer like you did is the best way I feel to do it. Was thought hat way in high-school in autoshop from retired mechanic teacher.
Pete 1st off you are so lucky to have a sick riding are like that local. 2nd glad to see someone else use the Hess link so many people said they don’t do anything at all. I used 1 on mine but with a single spring rear shock. We have very similar setups I also run yfz450r long travel with JDperformance arms. Another where everyone says go buy aftermarket shocks don’t waste your money on revalves. But you and Rocket Ron killed it
The JD arms are nice! I looked at those awhile back. My friend Patrick Riggs recommended the Hess link and so did Ron. I saw Patrick’s Raptor just eating whoops in Florida so I knew I wanted a similar set up. I’m super happy with Ron’s work. Someday I hope to try aftermarket shocks so I can see the comparison with the oems but that will be quite awhile from now 😅👍
I had a front long travel set up on two different quads over the years. One was a banshee and the other one was a 89 250 R. I actually could not stand to ride either quad. It felt too wide too heavy and seem to hit every bump on the trail. I removed it from both the quads and went back to stock. So much better for me anyway. You did a fantastic job on the install!
You're the only person I've ever heard say they don't like Long Travel. I've got an 86 trx250r with elka legacys and I wish I went with Long Travel over +1+1 a arms and elka legacy 2.0 shovks

Great job 👏 buddy. Looked great on the ride looked nice and plush. I’d love for you to bring the Raptor out to the my neck of the woods the Oregon Dunes. That’s the one thing I really wanna do this winter is send my YFZ shocks to rocket Ron, and have him go through them. And set it for my weight and set it for the dunes.. the suspension on my YFZ is good but I bet rocket Ron could make it even better…
Sick quad bro! I love your build! Nice info for the most part. The claw hammer (carpenter tool on mechanical work) shoulda been a ball peen and with the brakes you can just open the bleeder valve and let it sit open while working on something else until gravity does the job of pumping for you. Then proceed with the normal process.
Hey what I did for my suspension that I highly recommend, is get rubber washers for some bolts, it will prevent them from coming lose and the suspension from collapsing
I'll never sell my 2006 yamaha raptor, just keep modding it. So far, I got a plus 5mm stroker crankshaft, 105.5mm cylinder and piston, plus 3mm intake valves plus 2mm exhaust valves. Stage 3 cam, 11:1 compression piston, didn't want to go too high. EFI controller, freed up intake and exhaust, 23 tall tires up front and 22 inches out Back full Hinson clutch set up. Also installed a new rear axle that's wider as well. Plus it's geared to the moon 🌙. At 75mph in 4th I can pull it up then shift into 5th and it's just stupid. But very fun. This combat veteran loves riding it's my happy place. Probably find something slow for my beautiful exotic Lebanese wife like a Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke 4x4. But easy to upgrade and toss in a 2-stroke motor from a Polaris RMK or Dragon snowmobile lol. If she gets bored 😴.....
Pete, for the record, you removed the tie rod ends correctly. Leave a few threads of the nut like that and give the housing hell. Another reason for putting the nut back on is if you hit a glancing blow and mar up the threads, you won't be able to reuse that tie rod end (if you aren't replacing it).
Also, brake fluid is water soluble, but extremely flammable and will strip paint. If spilled on painted surfaces, spray down with water and it'll run right off and dilute.
I got my quad a day before New Years this year and it’s parked needs some ball joints and tires mostly quite sad that I haven’t ridden it in a couple months now. But seeing you ride your 700r is nothing compared to my 550 predator yes I have a that quad that nobody likes not the best one but it’s my first and it feels good to ride.

Pete you need to get yourself a 3lb beater. Makes stuff like what you used s carpentry hammer for so much easier, also get a dead blow and a rubber mallet
On the topic of taking a hammer to suspension components: it's totally fine but get yourself a brass/rubber hammer or mallet. Hardened steel hammers on aluminum suspension can ruin your day if you unga-bunga it a little too much. Awesome stuff though!
Your the man pete🤘🤘 absolutely love watching you rip the raptor, I crashed my 2020 se a month ago got hit by a deer, waiting to get back on the trails 🤘
Long travel is nice but you dont actually get more suspension travel with long travel shocks you just get more tunability of the springs on the shocks (BNR Motorsports has a video on this). Either way LT or Standard travel with a proper re-spring and new valving with extended A-Arms is the way to go for sure!
I'm assuming the BNR video is specifically talking about the YFZ450R as he even states other bikes do gain wheel travel. I had to watch it because that's the first time I have heard that. The raptor being almost 4 inches narrower than the 450R has to be the main reason for that difference.
Great job sir, looks like you got it all installed in a nice methodical manner and I know the difference you are feeling is insane. This is making me wish I didn't sell mine! lol

They make long travel .5 XC arms that only widen half an inch over stock on each side. Plus they increase ground clearance. You could set them up with YFZR shocks and it would be sick! That would be wild on the Michigan trails! 👌
I assume you don't ride much in michigan but I feel like you would absolutely love the trails in gladwin especially they are without a doubt my favorite trails to ride but also like leota or st Helen area are also some pretty awesome trails
I absolutely love the Raptors, I've had a few over the years. I'd love to build another for xc racing...I know they aren't ideal, but I know they can be competitive
I really like it, it's surpassed my expectations. The quad hasn't bucked on any hard impacts and I slammed a shelf super hard suddenly a few rides ago. I thought for sure I was gonna get tossed but it ate up the impact. So far I'm just as impressed with the rear as I am with the front. It's taking on the whoops much straighter and more consistently 👌
So exactly how wide is the front now? I'm going with the Alba Racing +2" Adjustable Long Travel Arms that have an adaptor to run Stock Shocks until you can Get/Afford Long Travel Shocks. If a Stock 700r is 46" wide than my +2" (on each Side) should get me to 50", which is what I need for 50" trails here in MI. Does changing to Long Travel add any Width and what year YFZ Shocks did you/can you use for the Raptor? Thanks, Love the Channel...From on Old School 3-Wheel Guy.
Mine is right around 49inches with the stock wheel offset. I would think your width would stay the same between the standard/long travel shocks. I didn’t know they made adapters to run standard shocks on long travel arms. The YFZR shocks I picked up were only a couple years old. I want to say they’re the same across the model years as long as you don’t get shocks off one of the narrower X models they made early on 😊
Great video brother. Doing pretty much same job on mine this coming week. So only the suspension bolts and a arm bolts put them snug while in the air and torque them all once on the ground right?
I tightened my ball joints while it was elevated but then did all the control arms and shocks on the ground. Sabo told me theres some small tolerances in fitment with those parts and it's good for them to be settled on the ground when torquing them down. I don't think it's absolutely mandatory but good practice to have so I took his advice 👍
How wide is the rear on your Raptor? Did you add the new axle? And for the Houser a arms do you need new brake lines and shocks or can you stay with what comes stock on the 700r?
I have an adjustable rear axle by lone star. It’s right around 50 inches. I’ve seen people get away with using the OEM brake lines on extended A arms but I chose to get extended lines by streamline. You can always order these arms in standard travel and use your OEM raptor shocks 😊👍
Hey Pete I wanted to start doing videos like yours for awhile now on my 2014 raptor 700r can you list a few things for your recording setup like how you keep charging your go pro batteries etc love the videos btw keep it up
Did you notice the drop from the hess linkage was it a true 1 inch ? What did you start with on your caster ? I just installed some houser arms on my quad

I want to say they’re the same across the model years as long as you don’t get shocks off one of the narrower X models they made early on 😊
@@PeteHager Thanks, as far as I know, the Alba Racing Arms are the only ones that come with the adapters.
Ur working on quads get rid of the claw hammer
I'm liking the license plate bracket. Where to get one of them??
Hey Pete I love your bike They are cool bikes Raptor 700 and YFZ 450r and Pete I love your RUclips channel
Sweet thanks brother I appreciate. You both definitely know more then me so I’ll do it that way, keep up the dope videos!
Thanks for the video really appreciate it!!!
Hey Pete I wanted to start doing videos like yours for awhile now on my 2014 raptor 700r can you list a few things for your recording setup like how you keep charging your go pro batteries etc love the videos btw keep it up
Do ALL the 2020 and up Raptor SE come standard with the GYTR front "bumper" and aluminum footwells?
Did you notice the drop from the hess linkage was it a true 1 inch ? What did you start with on your caster ? I just installed some houser arms on my quad
