I’ll break it down for you as best as I can. Section one is just Jonny and Ed doing the arpeggios while Phil plays the beat, after a few bars Jonny does a different variation of the arpeggios and then Colin comes in with bass. Towards the middle of section one thom enters playing the original variation while Ed starts playing Jonnys variation and Jonny begins playing a new variation. Section two drums/bass/Ed drop out Jonny hops over to the Rhodes piano and thom continues playing guitar over the part (this gives Ed time to switch out a guitar for his ebow section). Section three is the best part (in my opinion) drums enter again with Ed on the ebow and Phil plays a more straightforward version of the beat. While this section is building this gives Jonny time to jump back on guitar and start building a loop on his akai headrush, it’s basically lots of high random guitar notes within the key of the part, he’s able to kill the signal to the amp while he builds it so it isn’t played over the rest of the band. Thom comes in with his guitar part and the bass slowly comes back in and Jonny hits play on his loop while playing his guitar part. It’s all live. Watch again and watch for these things.
ExileOnDaytonStreet he’s playing to a click, as are Thom and Jonny because of the section where they drop out, it’s not that hard of a beat for a drummer that knows what they’re doing and phill very much knows what he’s doing.
Fortunately yes, they are that good live. The radiohead shows I’ve been fortunate enough to see have by far been some of the best concerts I’ve been to, they take you to another world and the musicianship is incredible. In rainbows is a great album for people new to radiohead, and basically all of in rainbows can be found in the form of the basement session videos, all I need, nude, and bodysnatchers are some of my favourites and would be cool to hear your thoughts on!
I totally agree, I have been to many yet not enough Radiohead concerts and they are amazing live. They are that great. You should go and see for yourself when they come to a city near you.
Funny the first time I heard anything from them was I bought a bargin priced CD "I might be wrong" live concert, and fell in love with them because of their live performances.
i was soo lucky to start my journey with Radiohead from in rainbows, because i was so young and it was actually their last album back them. it was very strong to me. and I thinki you are totally right, in rainbows is a great startpoint
The reason they sound so good and it sounds so close to the studio version is because they are in a studio setting, so although the music hasnt been mixed or mastered, the recording quality is equivalent. However, I did notice a difference between this and the album version, namely in the second part of the song when the beat recovers, Jonny Greenwood's guitar is initially playing different strums.
The whole In Rainbows album is fire. The sound is very similar to the studio because they recorded the album old school. So when your listening to the album on most songs your practically listening to a live session. And yes musically they are that good live, sometimes Thom's vocals can be hit and miss but he nailed it here. Suggestions:- VAST- Touched or Here NIN- Wish or Last
I think it was Nigel Godrich who once said Thom used to have panic attacks before and after shows, which can lead to myoclonic seizures, of a throat in particular, so I wonder about less relaxed settings
"From The Basement" is a series from Nigel Godrich, who happens to be the producer of Radiohead for the last couple of decades, in his own studio. This is 100% live. Remember this is a studio performance, meaning it is all multitrack recorded and post-processed/mixed/mastered. And when you take a band at its peak, in setting they are comfortable with, with identical gear as used in the studio, with a producer they've worked with since they were all in their early twenties: this is what you get. That is the contrast with most 'famous singers' who are coupled with a talented group of session musician they just met and a producer who signed up for this two weeks ago.
I saw them on this tour, and they were legit the best live performance representation of a record that I've ever experienced. The entire "In Rainbows: From The Basement" film is bonkers.
this video is completely live. listen to jonny's guitar part, its totally differient, and the keyboard in the bridge is differient too. plus the effect that jonny does at the end is differient that the one in the studio. the studio version also probably has more guitar layers too
Radiohead have never lip-synced or used any pre-recorded tracks to fake play to. They are a real band, not pop performers. Listen to the studio album and this live version back to back. They sound quite different. Thoms voice comes in a bit early as well as late a few times in this version. It also cracks and waivers at various times. The instruments also sound live and unmixed here. They sound a lot more clean in the studio version. They had a very good set-up here (in Greenwood's basement studio) with professional recording equipment and great acoustics in order for it to sound as good as possible. They spent a lot of time fine tuning everything for a high quality live broadcast which is why it sounded so good for a live performance.
The idea of from the basement is to show you the performance without the distraction of " entertaining" the audience! They are musically gifted like Prince was! They all can play any instrument
Radiohead wouldnt really even consider the studio versions better than the live versions. At this point they just wanted to play the best versions of the songs that were ever recorded. But rest assured there was no pre recording before this song. They are just that good, and that was just a sign of the times when playing a great version live no matter where was a sign of pride, and no one ever thought about the likes, the retweets, or the engagement. They killed it because they were meant to be the third or fourth super UK band, first the Beatles, then Led Zeppelin, then Pink Floyd, then Radiohead. This was their moment in time, and they seized it. Or the third if you count them as super progressive bands who moved music forward by a decade.
Definitely do all the songs from the Basement. I really recommend all of them lol "Nude" is a great one, "Where I end and you Begin" "Bodysnatchers" "Videotape" etc. 😅😁
Check out their 'Scotch Mist' performance of this album by webcast. I've seen (heard) them live twice now, and I was blown away both times by how great they are live. They aren't a 'live' band or a 'studio' band. They are most definitely both-and.
Brotha. That is 100% all live. In the basement covers the entire album live where they literally are just jamming out. They did kind of the same thing before called Scotch Mist. And that's the same 5 members you'll always see.
You need to see them live. They don't do half-and-half macRock stuff. They have all the gadgets synced up to loop and process in each song and a control panel of sound guys to the side of the stage to keep it flowing as they play.
@@owenjacobs65 Ed O'Brien (the "rhythm guitarist" who does most of the effects work) did an interview on That Pedal Show where he said that of the 60+ songs that they did on their recent 2018 tour, they only had a backing track on one of them (the /r/radiohead community figures it's The Gloaming that they have the track on). Everything else is done fully live on stage, with their lead guitarist (Jonny Greenwood) playing a wide variety of instruments through the night. It's genuinely impressive when you realize how close they get to the recorded songs.
I absolutely had an emotional moment when I finally watched these guys live and they played this. I also had about four other intensely emotional moments during the concert. They're just really damned good at their jobs.
They really are that good, but I hope you’ve listen to the entire album because it’s a masterpiece. It should be taken as a whole. It may be the greatest rock album of all time.
Their best album IMO, and there are subtitle differences in the voice from the album. The drum track im not sure but it wouldnt make sense for just one part being pre recorded. The drummer in the band is known for being a drum machine, not much flair but great at keeping time.
I think what you're not taking into account the fact that even though this is live, it's recorded in a studio, with a mixer, and everything dialed right in.
Yeah, as another person said, they're that fucking good. You can better see the discrepancies in other performances. But wow, Ruiner than this? You're on a roll. Please PLEASE react to the closure live performance of NIN's eraser linked here... it's visually and sonically amazing: ruclips.net/video/x71q_cU0g4o/видео.html
They are that good live. I’ve seen them live many times. It’s pretty unbelievable how good they are. You should watch this live version (not for the channel, just for yourself) of weird fishes: ruclips.net/video/63Hl1TxK6PI/видео.html It’s amazing, even better than this one!
It's not fake :/ Obviously you're a fan of bands that are shit at playing live if you're so skeptical of this. I personally find it weird that so many bands can't perform, because how do you even write music without being able to play it?
Sam Serrao I ESPECIALLY love bands that don’t know how to play their own music. The #1 thing I look for in bands that I attempt to hold close to my heart are their incredible ability to stray as far away from the original sound of the studio track that it becomes almost unrecognizable when played live. Tbh, accurate played live music makes me a little sick. Just seems too egotystical to me :/. Hopefully some of these Radiohead tracks will begin to sound more absent minded then what i’ve heard so far🤷🏼♂️
I’ll break it down for you as best as I can. Very good rundown.
Also: Phil is a human drum machine. He really is good enough to do that beat, with no fills to reset his timing, for 5 minutes.
Exactly this 👍
ExileOnDaytonStreet he’s playing to a click, as are Thom and Jonny because of the section where they drop out, it’s not that hard of a beat for a drummer that knows what they’re doing and phill very much knows what he’s doing.

They are that good. These are true musicians. And soooo many layers.
i was soo lucky to start my journey with Radiohead from in rainbows, because i was so young and it was actually their last album back them. it was very strong to me. and I thinki you are totally right, in rainbows is a great startpoint
It's all live. Radiohead are phenomenal musicians. For you to think it's a mix is actually a real compliment.
How has no one mentioned the smile coming round the door? Best youtube moment of the week 😍
Great review. These performances are all genuine I can assure you that. Try Reckoner next!
radiohead91 👍🏻👍🏻
Yup. They’re just that good.

the music has been mixed and mastered. just because its a live recording doesnt mean it cant be properly mixed and mastered.
I like your reaction, there are no fake emotions like most similar videos on RUclips
“I’d be crazy not to follow... follow where you lead...”
Beautiful love song, full of longing and loss. This is a masterpiece.
That was 100% live. They are that good

They are incredibly good live.
btw the girlfriend wasn't sleeping, she videobombed you at 00:54 :D
Max Georgin - Neorigg I noticed now :))
not gonna lie. When I looked up from the video and saw her, freaked me out.
That's... pretty adorable.
scared me tbh

What? You’re questioning if the song is genuinely done live? Of course it is. There’s no half and half whatever.
"I wanna be wanna be wanna be Thom Yorke".
Cit.
Its all live. Great reaction! Everything from the basement is amazing
Alex Jayne 👍🏻👍🏻 :))
They are that good live! No bullshit.
Radiohead are just that good. This was live.
The most technically talented rock band in the world. When cover bands try to pull it off it usually sounds disastrous. Total innovation

Radiohead a band on a different level.

YEP, THAT GOOD....
I watched them live in Glasgow. The live performance was as good as studio . Incredible musicians
Jesus christ this performance was 16 years ago, where did that go?
One of the best live versions of " Weird Fishes" is the performance they gave on " Jools Holland"

It's outstandingly good 👍
Nope! It sounds like that live! I've seen them and they are phenomenonal!

I can't belive you didn't belive it wasn't live. Today's society sucks.
It’s 100% live trust
watch them perform this on Jools holland as well as bodysnatchers live
What's really cool during that performance is seeing Jools Holland seemingly in awe of them.

wow what a great "reaction". You sat there while we all watched a video we like.
You don’t understand Radiohead at all. Sorry dude.
