2004 Federal Leaders' Debate
The first English language debate of the 39th Canadian general election.
Paul Martin
Stephen Harper
Jack Layton
Gilles Duceppe
Fun fact.: There are four men on here (Harper, Layton, Martin, Duceppe). Of these four men, three of them (Layton, Harper, and Duceppe), got to serve as Leader Of The Official Opposition during their political careers. The only one of them who never served as Opposition leader was Paul Martin.
Martin was the Opposition Opposition Leader.
@@somerandomasshole4561 he decided not to be the leader of the opposition so he immediately resigned as liberal leader
You notice how they muted Jack Layton’s mic before he was done ripping Paul Martin to shreds? THAT’s what we need in American debates - when your talking time is over, that means OVER.
This happened when I was four. I was probably watching something like Blues Clues or TreeHouseTV during the debate.
Maybe you were sleeping.
I hate Christmas. I hate Christmas wishes.
Jack Layton seemed to be criticizing both Martin and Harper. He (Stephen Harper) was so good then. Why did he change?
Never trust a tory
We barely dodged a CPC private prison system, a la 'Murica.
We need a parliament full of Laytons. Not sure Jagmeet is, but there are plenty "no name" MPs available.
well nice that unlike most of the debates from the 90s onward this one didn't have soo much shouting and talking over one another. once more if I had the chance to vote I would've casted mine for the NDP under Layton. Paul Martin did better in this debate as he wasn't shouted down too much, again many of them failed to answer a lot of questions but it really upset me Stephen Harper defending the Iraq War, Martin lying and getting away with Canada's real role in Iraq which was working behind the scenes to conserve an illegal occupation, and more egregious is Martin lying about Canada's role in Haiti and that illegal coup against the democratically elected government of Aristide. if Martin was given his walking papers those two imperial crimes were far more impeachable and worthy of firing him over then the sponsorship scandal.
Was there an election in 2005 and 2006?
The election campaign was called by Paul Martin in the later part of 2005 on Tuesday November 29. But there was some time taken off of the campaign in order for the leaders to join other Canadians in on the holiday season. The pre-Christmas break debates were on Thursday December the 15th (French) and Friday December the 16th (English). Then after the holidays and New Year’s, they held two more debates Monday January the 9th (English) and Tuesday January the 10th (French). It’s weird I don’t know why they needed two sets of debates just because the election intercepted two years.
if only Paul Martin knew what was coming LOLLLLLLL
Every Harper hater in the comments needs to chill out. You don't know anything.
Harper was a US-first PM. Theocratic voters put him in office. Multinational corporations kept him in office.
And Conservatives have the audacity to claim they are anti PC, and anti "identity politics".
@@chadsimmons4496tell that to the Canadians who were voting from 2006-2011. Thanks to them, the Tories won a majority government from 2011-2015
@@L_back four horrible years
Jack Layton !
Jack Layton sounds desperate here LUL
Bizarre seeing Harper as the up and comer. Can't believe he was elected on this platform.
He wasn't he cheated to win by election fraud
He should he investigated by the rcmp. He robbed Layton in 2011 I'm watching this in 2019 and I'm getting more angry as I watch
17 years later...
patient wait times have never been higher
our government's finances are still a mess thanks in some part to the Harper tax cuts, but we're still living with high tax loads
politics in ottawa are business as usual
~@1:39:00 elected senate...didn't happen
Harper, like Mulroney brought change, but the changes he proposed didn't achieve his aims (other than shortsighted tax cuts)
imagen thinking tax cuts are a bad thing. delusional.
