A note for anyone planning to do this themselves, you must bleed the fuel system before cranking any common rail diesel. Turning the ignition on and off (07:35) is not sufficient and can/will lead to premature wear of the high pressure fuel pump which requires diesel at all times for lubrication. ISTA+ is needed to run the fuel bleed function. Plenty of videos online showing this. You can also take off one of the return lines under the bonnet and use a vacuum pump to suck diesel through the system. Whatever you do, don't just crank it over. It's a sure fire way to cause HP fuel pump damage and is not the right way to do this job. Also, at 04:35 there should also be a small O-ring that is replaced on the diesel heater. It comes in the MHALE kit, which is the genuine filter BMW uses for these (or at least did in the past).
Hello from Cyprus! I am watching all your videos as I have same exact car, a 10/2007 520d e60 n47 engine. Extremely helpful. Well done. May I ask if after replacing the fuel filter, is there any other step involving a service diagnostic or just the replacement itself. Lastly, I have the the CCC Idrive version and I would like to update/upgrade it the same like yours to CIC. any suggestions or recommendation? Keep on rocking!
Costel Tarata Glad you’re liking the videos so far Costel! There is nothing you need to do after replacing the fuel filter. With regards to updating to CIC you would need the entire CIC system which is around £1000 for the system, screen, controller, cables etc and will need to be coded in to work with your car👍🏻
I would recommend that you do NOT unscrew the small torx. Leave the bracket on the filter. Instead, unscrew the large bolt and mark the position of the bracket and then mount the bracket before mounting the filter under the car. I just spent 45 minutes getting it to fit. Had to remove it again and mount the bracket first. The rubber ring that came with the new filter was thicker than the original, it also gave some problems. It was a pain in the ass .... sorry for the language. Gotta say I did it on the floor, I just sold my 4 post lift. It also makes it more problematic. But thanks for the video, it still helped a lot.
I'm from Portugal and I have a one E81 120d with N47 motor and I'm really enjoying watching your videos. Still focused friend. Your channel has a very good content.
I just did my install tonight…My filter was a pain in the ass to remove off the plastic portion of it and putting it on was very difficult as well. I tried two brand new filters (an oem and a generic filter)and both were stubborn to install.. I ended up having to set the plastic part on a 1x4 piece of wood and rubber malleting the filter onto the plastic piece… I’m lucky to have not have broke anything…I’ve watched several of these videos and all of them come off and install easy 😂😂😂… wish mine went as smoothly… I primed my diesel filter before install and it started right up.. no computer needed to start the fuel pump…
Hi how are you doing I have a BMW 520d M47 engine when I opened the filler cap for the oil Is spitting out is this a big problem Lake your comments keep it up
George, jesus what a pain i had today !!! I have the late e53 and to get access to the filter was a complete pain in the ass !! 2 hours to get the bolts off and lower the panel. Looks like i had the original BMW Mann filter so after 110,000km it was time for a change. 30mins put it all back again. I sawed the old filter open and it was black with alot of grit ! So a €11 febi filter is now on. Oh i turned the ignition about 3 times to prime, then 4th time tried to start and it fired up straight away !! So muchas gracias y espero que tengas un buen dia !!
Hi George, i have 2006 E91 with N52 engine and i have one question. Is a fuel filter in the middle of the car similarly like in this car on your video? Thanks a lot.
I just changed mine As the garage that replaced it last year had it twisted touching under frame of the car every time you got to 2000 revs would get a vibration Seems all good so far
Hi mate, how much fuel leaked out when you took the filter off? Does the tank empty itself or is there some kind of valve stopping the fuel pouring out? Thanks
Do you know the part number of the fuel filter heater ?? I have the fault code 4B1C and it says that the filter can't be heated properly..Do you know something about all of those things ?
I'm having difficulties in re-inserting the retaining clip in to the back of the fuel filter. It does not want to clip home. Any suggestions as to what I might do to get it to clip home? Thanks in advance.
@@GeorgeAusters Birmingham.. the reason I'm asking is because u seem like the man!!! I have same car as yours. U advised me on remap, & also my 3 year old putting 20p in my dvd navigation drive! Do u have tools to remove the unit & would u be paid to do it?
Hi George, I recently changed my fuel filter with a mechanic and since then ive noticed a lot less response when hitting gas especially in low rpms, it was perfectly fine before this but feels like something aint right, maybe it's the quality of filter which was a mahle one, the previous one I think was bosch.
Iv just done a service on my e82 msport. With the fuel line I take it off get the new one keep the plug on the end put new fuel into the new filter then fit everything. After everything done put the key in wait to hear the fuel pump then take the key out do this a few times Your engine won’t like starting if a air block in the line air won’t compress lol It will still start but at what cost The oil filter needs the same put new oil all over it then fit in place. You can get same problem. Start the engine and when the oil pump starts and pushes air around the new filter it can compress the filter folds and bend them so won’t work properly.
Anyone who is planning to replace this I recommend just bringing it to a garage. This method ruins your high-pressure fuel pump. (because of air in the system and letting it run dry). Someone I know learned this the hard way and had to replace the high-pressure fuel pump costing $750.

Another helpful video for BMW (diesel) owners - thanks.
Very informative. Thank you genuinely.
Very useful as this is similar to the Mini Countryman 2.0 SD (N47) fuel filter and could not find a video for the Countryman on RUclips
Good stuff!
love the channel bro keep up what your doing its very helpfull for all folks fairplay bro
Great video. Really helped me change our E87's fuel filter.

Hi George. By any chance do you know where this is located on a E90 Petrol? It’s not underneath?
This is one of my favourite BMW. I love e60 interior and the exterior what a beautiful car.

No fuel filter on those. It’s built into the in tank fuel pump👍🏻
Hi George do you know if the N43 116i e87 has a fuel filter like yours? Or Is it built into the actual fuel pump?
I just changed mine

does fuel not pour out when you take it off? did you disconnect anything before you started?
Hi in the UK what side is the filtre passanger side?
I can’t find a filter for bmw f01 2011. with n 63 engine. Pulled both sides undercarriage and nothing. I am confused !

hello, is there a problem if the filter is primed from the ignition several times or does it have to be unbroken?
Hi my filter is not there Msport 2006 520d , do you know if they can put in difrend place please help thanks
Hey mate, i have a question. Do i have to fill up the filter with diesel? Air wont do any damage to the high pressure pump?
No mate. This is a self priming system. Just turn on your ignition a few times before trying to start👍🏻
Good job!
What year is the car in the video I look under mine it’s not located there if got a 528i 2009
There isn't one on your car.. It's built into the fuel pump
Nice see how the filter look inside
Well done!
Hi mate, how much fuel leaked out when you took the filter off? Does the tank empty itself or is there some kind of valve stopping the fuel pouring out? Thanks
Only what’s in the fuel line so not much, the pump has to lift the fuel from the tank
Excellent guidance thanks
Thanks
is this the same for petrol BMW's?
Does this apply to the 2012 bmw 128i as well?
whats the change interval for this?
Ta, George, very helpful.
No worries Nathan!
Great how to video
Need to do a car meet with e60 / e61 owners not many around in the uk
That’d be amazing. All in one place... would make for some good photos!
Great video, thank you. again you can see from some of the comments all the wannabe mechanics passing there remarks.
Any idea if this would be the same job on an e84?
Yes pretty much
Is there any need to clamp pipes whilst carrying out this job ??
Nope
Is this the same for a 3 series petrol F30

I'm having difficulties in re-inserting the retaining clip in to the back of the fuel filter. It does not want to clip home. Any suggestions as to what I might do to get it to clip home? Thanks in advance.
Never worry, I was putting it in the wrong direction!
You may be trying it the wrong way, it's not difficult to install at all, its not exactly a tight fitting clip
@@GeorgeAusters yep, yep, I have since figure it out. I was 90 degrees off, the important thing is that it's in now. Ta again for the response.

No
