After the second month and some therapy for the foot, things got a lot better and did overall great working my way back to actually enjoying the summer doing very basic things. it wasn't until month 6 when I felt something weird in my left low back.
I thought it was part of the process mentioning it to the Dr's, Physical Therapist and all but we kept pushing on. They didn't want to do any scans being how much radiation I was already under during the surgeries and post-op checkups. When I reached my eight month follow-up, I mentioned to my neurosurgeon all that was going on and how that one pain kept feeling like I couldn't fire off completely, kept getting weak, some burning and such. It still wasn't as bad as it was post-op but was weird and wanted confirmation there wasn't anything wrong.
We decided to do an x-ray and sure enough, he returned saying "you know your body" and showed me I had a broken screw! I couldn't believe it but at the same time, it made complete sense as to why I was restricted there. Thank God non of the nerve pain came back and still held strong since the procedure however, it meant I would need to go back under to fix the broken screw because of how much I felt it and the restrictions it had.
A month later, we were back under doing another fusion. He felt it would be best to leave the broken screw being how tight it was into the sacrum risking the bone breaking to take out so instead, he fused that over and then added in two new screws and a new rod that were a bigger than the previous, put in more bone matter and fused it back over.
Today 1-17-24 is two months post-op and although still moving slow, it proved to be a very necessary fix. I feel the relief but also a different level of fusion as it may actually be taking now. I start my new level of PT (still with restrictions of no BLT) but good enough to get core work and basics going again. This time I am going to a performance facility that works on rehab for athletes and will see if this plan will finally get me to where I need to be and return back to normalcy (along with playing golf) once again.
Overall, I remain happy with the surgery in general as I still am clear from the original pain. With this fix, the screw pain is under control and feel the fusion starting to take place. The key is time along with nutrition, water and consistency. I pushed things more than I should and most people tend to do that but.. it is a long process that has to be cared for and constantly listening to your body.
I hope you start to get relief soon and best wishes to you along the journey. Keep the faith that all will be well. I may make some updated vids since the last one I posted as lots happened since then.
