I do not remember my successes as much as I remember my failures or near failures. I always learned something when things didn't go as planned. Thanks for the quick tutorial on changing out the trailer wheel bearings. I will be doing that this spring on my tiny utility trailer. Take care, stay well and have a great week ahead.

I was wondering the same thing. I said to myself “why grease them then if you’d really prefer the challenge of doing this on the side of the road at night, in the rain and with traffic streaming past at 100kph.”

An ounce of prevention or so the saying goes.
1990's, coworker buys motor home, low miles, but a driveway queen. Original tires, stored outside for 12+ years. Purchases quad, all excited about taking it down to the Gulf of California where she and friend's camp out, go quading, fishing etc.
I asked her about the tires engine and transmission fluids, coolant. You know where this is going, first tire craps out around Sacramento. Tire shop recommends replace all four which was my suggestion due to sun cracking. By the time she made it back she had all new tires (three different brands with two purchased in Mexico) new water pump, fan belts and other things I don't remember. When she got back she sold it because it wasn't reliable! I'm sure it was for the person who bought it. Oh so she bought a new RV with the maximum extended warranty. I mentioned for the sales tax alone she could have had the used RV completely gone through and updated so it be just as reliable without 7 years of payments!

I know there are many ways to accomplish a single task but have not seen a bering packed with grease that way. I have always forced the grease into the bering by scooping it using the palm of my hand.

When seating bearing races, use the old one, cut a slit with an angle grinder (races are hardened)! Set the new one in place and the old one on top beat on the old one, drives in straighter and the slit keeps it from binding!

Time permitting, I like to make sure that any grease fittings are capable of have grease pumped through them before I reassemble something. Most of the times it's not a problem, but when there is a problem it usually involves disassembling everything to fix it anyway, unless I get really lucky and it's just a clogged zerk fitting.

That's why I like to watch you Doug. There's a certain "zentitude" to your life that I like to think I apply to mine too. I'll keep this one in mind : "You can keep your boat tied to the pier so easily", in French we'd say "On ne fait pas d'omelettes sans casser des oeufs" or "You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs". Kinda gets the idea. Keep it up Doug, you're always a big motivation boost and an inspiration to get your hands dirty and your ass outta the couch ^^

Working at a camp in the middle of the desert in deep deep west Texas, imagine my confusion one day, cleaning the back of the shop, when I found hidden on a shelf behind the old paint, a can, on which was printed "Boat Trailer Axle Grease" There is no water there, no water near by, the camp did not own a boat, the camp did not own a boat trailer. And yet, there it was, Boat Trailer Axle Grease.

  • @christianjensen3182

I know I'm a year late to the party but when you grease the bearings with that grease zirc on the axle, you're supposed to keep spinning the hub/wheel or you'll blow out the rear seal.

I retired and then went over 26,000 miles on a first set of bearings on my first boat trailer and my first boat before I found out, learned, from the repair place that no more than 7,000 per set is advised before replacing bearings. The repair man was amazed at the amount I had traveled by just replacing the grease each time before each trip by elevating the tire off the ground slowly spinning the tire and constantly pumping grease until new grease was oozing out. This is part of the retirement learning experience. I am on my third set and have just replaced the bearings and am traveling 847 miles each leg for a two week trip fishing trip to Lake St. Catherine , Louisiana. I still carry a spare.

    Epic trip.
Bought a trailer yacht which had spent the last 30 years traveling 200 meters up the road to the ramp and back.Checked the wheel bearings 3 were good one bad. Changed it and then set off on the 130km trip home. 20km in a tire disintegrates. Its good got 2 spares.
50km in a second tire looses half it tread. Starting to panic, phone a friend 40km away to arrange to overnight there. 20km later the first spare on blows up. Ok stuck on the expressway, 3km to off ramp, put the 2nd tire which still had preasure but missing half its tread back on, then a slow 10km/hr to the off ramp. Leave the boat on someones front lawn.
Back the next morning with 2 NEW tires, what can go wrong? Start off down the road in a state of deep anxiety, come to some road works there a shudder from the back , I'm a nervous wreak, my mates like "calm down you are suffering from hyper-vigilance"(he's a mental health nurse). Deep breaths pulse back to 100bpm . All good until I pull over to let cars past and the first one shouts out " Mate you lost a wheel back there".
Drop the boat off , race back pick the wheel up, 2 studs missing 2 loose. Luckily the auto parts place up the road is open. 4 new studs and we finish the trip at 30km/h because I'm to scared to go any faster. NEVER trust 20 year old retreads!
4 NEW tires and now all I have to do is repeat the journey in reverse, any takers?

My wife was on a road trip as a kid and the throttle cable broke so being that they were not a wealthy family a string held out the window attached to the throttle body by her father got them to the nearest salvage yard and a couple hours later he had a new cable installed and they were on their way again. Its not the bumps it's how you handle with them that counts.

Towing that air compressor across the country will be no excitement at all. The convenience of using a shop to replace the bearings is unusual enough I might just remember that instead. Most of the time I've changed them in the parking lot of a parts store, either to prevent or replace a smoking hot hub.
