I actually saw ABBA live at Nääs Castle outside Gothenburg in September of 1973. I was just seven years old, so I don't remember all the details. I do remember though that they performed "Ring Ring" twice. I think they started the concert with the Swedish version and ended the show with the English version. I can also recall that all four members performed one of their solo hits. I remember very clearly that Björn performed "Omkring tiggarn från Luossa", which was a huge hit for Hootenanny Singers that same year and I think Agnetha performed "Vart ska min kärlek fara?" (I don't know how to love him) from "Jesus Christ Superstar". That's about all I can recall from that magic evening that changed my life forever.

this was a fascinating look at the birth of ABBA..most people won't realise how much they'd accomplished before ABBA was officially formed..what great work you've done here bb...looking forward to the next installment....btw....I have to say that my favourite song from the early days is "he is your brother " a fantastic song with lyrics that mean so much in life,especially today....❤
This is amazing BB,thankyou .You can feel and see the evolution and growth of 4 beautiful solo artists come together in love for each other and passion for their music and try different ideas and concepts in presenting their talents through cabarets, park concerts and TV appearances.Bjorn and Benny trying new innovative ideas using every available technology and medium at their disposal during the late 60s early 70s to give Sweden and the world their gifts of music and song .And NOW they are still using technology and futuristic concepts to continue this tradition that began over 50years ago with the VOYAGE concerts in 2022 .Not even the Beatles or Rolling Stones can even come close to this achievement. They are truly a PHENOMENON .
I do recall back in the mid/ late '70s that despite the unmerciful criticism from the press,there were still some unselfish,honest,wide-minded journalists that did reckoned them as something really special and call them just the way you did.A phenomenon.Time did proved them right.And i believe that even amongst the ones that were slagging them off,there were people that were always keeping an eye on every little thing ABBA did.Cause they could feel that their superiority was hugely there,alive and kicking .Noone could avoid their sunshining ability and impact.Some years after their hiatus, the gap of their absence in the pop buisness was big.Fans were rather devastated and their silence was notiecably "loud" in the music scene.That's why the ground was so ready for their revival.Tribute bands,"Priscila","Muriel","Erasure smash EP," the "Mamma Mia" theatrical and all the rest that now is glorious history.Perfect timing for their coming back.

@@christianoazzuro6711 Yes journalists could be very cruel and not want to acknowledge and give credit to the superior talents and pure beauty of ABBA .But in Australia we took them into our hearts and loved them so much ,still do and always will ,our journalists were a little kinder and the few that derided them were ignored and berated .Those two films you mentioned, Muriel's wedding and Priscilla Queen of the desert are both Australian made ,so we really couldn't live our lives without ABBA and so we needed to keep them alive in any way we could ,and now they return ,NOW they return,I am so emotional about this and know that in this world of hate and violence ABBA possess the gifts of music and love for us to bring peace and friendship that unite the world and in particular allow me to meet and communicate with beautiful people like you Christiano and Bobby's Brother and of course others that share a love for these 4 beautiful Swedes that give and give and keep giving so much of themselves and their love and devotion to unite us in true friendship and mutual respect. Thankyou Christiano and Bobby's Brother we share in something so pure and beautiful that our lives feel complete ,this is what ABBA does to us and for us ,this is why they are a PHENOMENON.
Think of Elvis, he was a creation of times. The post war boom, the young generation, new technology such as TV, car radios, LPs etc. If both twins had died, there would have been someone nearly as big, probably Jerry Lee Lewis. As it was, the fates had genetically engineered the perfect pop star for that generation.
But, ABBA was pure talent. Had they not come together, there would have been nobody from Europe even close.
I'm blown away to realize how much they had already accomplished in pre-ABBA years. Looking back, I appreciate how those years prepared them for their enormous international success. Apparently their huge success was not by chance!. Thanks for compiling this great video! Good work.

It is very good for us all to discover that the history of ABBA was not easy, that they had to endure difficulties to become the successful group that they are
even the victory in Eurovision was their international springboard, but at the same time the sword of Damocles that the critics and the world of music put on them,
until "S.O.S." put them in the place of recognition they deserved
but going back to your research work, it's great to see those first experiences of the future ABBA as a quartet, from the holidays in Cyprus and the Cabaret show
or Agnetha's trio with the two B's
and those filming of the four in Belgium 1973
I think that there is also little material of the four together because part of that 1972/73 was with Agnetha pregnant and postpartum
and I also think that tours cost ABBA more than any other group,
by their own family realities
(remembering that both Benny and Frida came from other couples with two small children each, so they had to manage those times)
and another issue that should not be forgotten is that the girls Frida and Agnetha had a contract with other recording companies other than Stig Anderson's Polar Music
Frida joined first
but I think that Agnetha had a longer contract, maybe 5 years, and that is why it is probable that she could not be released so easily to dedicate herself to ABBA (in fact, even in the third album 'ABBA' there is a legend that says 'Agnetha courtesy of CBS)

Such interesting and detailed insights into the birth of ABBA - thank you, Bobby's Brother! Watching this made me realize even more how right you were when you said that everything they did individually would gradually lead up to "People Need Love" and "Ring Ring". What never seizes to amaze me is how the musical backgrounds of each individual member couldn't have been further away from each other - think about it: Agnetha came from Swedish schlager-pop as a singer-songwriter, Frida was performing and recording jazz standards, Björn came from his own folk boygroup with The Hootenanny Singers and Benny was in what the ABBA documentary "The Winner Takes It All" called "Sweden's answer to The Beatles" with The Hep Stars. When you put these four musical genres next to each other, I don't think anyone could have guessed back in the day that these four, who were so successful in their own right in such vastly different styles, would mesh so beautifully to create one glorious, unique foursome, called ABBA...!
By the way, what a tantalizing teaser you put at the end when you hinted that their '74/'75 tours almost had a documentary made about them! Can't wait for the next one! Cheers, everyone!

How they progressed from performing song covers, then mixing in their original material, and then all four of them singing Benny and Bjorn compositions. I wish more concert footage from the 1977 Australia tour has been released including full length versions of the songs in “abba the movie.” “Tiger” sounded AWESOME live!

I loved this journey back to ABBA's early days of touring and performing before they unified as a group. Part 1 of your ABBA Tours series was fascinating, interesting and very informative. I remember seeing ABBA in Torquay infront of Abby Gardens,l think it was 1976.Bjorn and Agnetha both said hello to me,there was hardly anyone around them... people we're riding on the fair ground . Couldn't belive my luck.ln the end maybe 50/60 people came to see them...why is beyond me.l stood right in front of them,maybe 5/6 feet away from Bjorn...l was so in love with him,still am ❤ Somthing l will never forget.Thankyou for this video....Joyce England 🇬🇧

I really don’t know why they haven’t released anniversary editions of their albums, with remixed and remasters tracks and with alternate takes like the Beatles, Stones, Dylan and other bands have done. Who wouldn’t want to hear take 1 of so many of their classic songs.

Bisognerebbe trovare i concerti live di quegli anni e soprattutto sentire Agnetha cantare in concerto Jag bar sa kar come pur il duetto con Bjorn, noto solo in Svezia e cantato in svedese. Abito ad Agen in Francia e sono riuscito a farmi mandare dalla Svezia, cinque o sei album svedesi di Agnetha. Sono davvero bellissimi!

Hey Hey Bobby, I remember the Hootenanny Singers but never connected Bjorn with ABBA until later. In New York around 1966 or 67 , they were called “The Northern Lights “ for the release of an American LP. Why the name was changed for that you might know.
Over my younger years I had listened to different folk groups . I had a pen pal in Finland and she would send me the hottest singles there. I had forgotten about them and just ran through the few I have but nothing from any of the four. Drat!
I wonder if the lack of photos , songs, media clips and video coming up next is because of their first European tour ,Denmark Germany etc . They didn’t have sell out crowds and some concerts were canceled and Britain didn’t give them air time. So they went back to Sweden and were popular there..

Hej Fritzie, wow, you've been aware of the Hootenanny Singers in New York of 1966/67, I'm amazed! They were not happy with the name Hootenanny Singers, which was given to them by, I think, Stig Andersson. They were originally called West Bay Singers, so I guess they wanted to avoid to be ridiculed for the Hootenanny name in the US and called themselves "The Northern Lights", which sounds very mystical to me. Oh, they did some wonderful music, I really enjoy it, and I think they kept a very coherent quality throughout their (many!) albums. Always nice hearing from you, see you next time!
It's telling that even after the release of the 'Waterloo' album, the two ABBA women were still recording solo albums. After performing solo songs even when they were appearing as a foursome in the years before, it shows that there was still some uncertainty over the future of the group after their Eurovision win so Agnetha and Frida were keeping their options open.
Yep but in the other those were released after abba took really off with sos in Europe and Mamma Mia in Australia… from what I remember reading Agnetha had to release another solo album by contractual obligation…
After watching the video, if I may suggest, is that it would be very informative to compare the evolution of their shows compared with other contemporary artists, and the evolution of concert shows in the 70s, which was a major departure from the early decades where it was just a static singer performing. Loved the video and the avalanche of information that only you can put together so comprehensively. Regards!

Yes, Björn and Benny were heavily involved as house producers for Polar around this time. They realized by 1974/75 that they should rather focus on something else.. :-) See you soon for Part 2!

I have always read that they would’ve probably did some more touring but Agnatha did not like the touring lifestyle and she missed her kids so that hampered The success in the United States where they were very successful but they would’ve been superstars if they toured in the United States more often. They had a hit right out of the ballpark with Waterloo and they did not exploit that hit single at all with a concert tour or at least some personal appearances. They made appearances on shows like American bandstand and Saturday night live but they mainly lip-synched

@@christianoazzuro6711 Frida is often underrated in my opinion. I'm guessing it's due to the way she presented herself as an ABBA member. Agnetha seemed to get the limelight more often. But Frida sings a huge range of styles in and out of ABBA. Even in Voyage after all of those years her voice is still effortlessly beautiful.
@@toby9999Yes i know.As a child i remember we were more attracted to Agnetha.Striking blond,shiny looks, etc ha!ha!Almost everything a young teenager would like to see.But Frida also had an "eclectic" fan base.She also was more confident on stage than Agnetha and very supportive to her.Agnetha was feeling more safe in the studio.I love them both for a lot of different reasons.Here in this song F is very young so is her voice.1970/71 i think and similar kind of style to Agnetha's Swedish solo stuff .That's why i got confused.I listened to this song and i'm impressed by the production.After so many decades it still doesn't sound dated at all.Great orchestration with all acoustic instruments being played and sounding so glorious.And her voice has a velvet jazzy air.She's such a versatile little fox!
It's the live version of "Barnen sover" from the 1970 Festfolk radio broadcast, which is the oldest surviving live recording of three future members of ABBA. The studio recording was the closing song of Frida's debut album from 1971.
This was a lot of research. Thank you. It makes me think about how the members have evolved over time. All the members of the band had problems. Frida had one tragedy after another and was insecure. Bjorn had his memory disease. Benny was an Alcoholic. Agnetha had her neurosis and phobias. Of them all Agnetha seems to have retained the suffering inside herself the most.
Frida -- though she has gotten older is sort of the same personality. (It feels as if she lost her way for a few years after Benny dumped her -- but she has recovered well). And interestingly, she has faced the most grief and trouble in her life, but she continues to increase in an inner strength of positive thinking -- which she may have lacked in her younger years. To me, she is the most interesting person in that she seems to have evolved personally in the most positive direction.
Benny seems similar as he did in the past but not as energetic -- that's fair -- he is older. He seems to have accumulated ever greater knowledge and skill in music and this comes through in his personality - as does his defeat of alcoholism. But overall he seems the same. He may actually enjoy performing more now than he did then. You can see the happiness when people ask him to play!
It is odd that Frida and Benny could not stay together because looking back, they both seem to have had the best personal growth stories and both tend toward positivity and optimism. How would that not be compatible? And only Benny and Frida have not had divorces in the last 40 years - so they seem to be made for long relationships. Not sure why that failed for them.
Bjorn also has a similar personality to his younger self -- very practical -- but despite great success he is less cheerful and less optimistic looking or sounding in his later years -- more wizened. His pessimistic atheism may play a role in this. It may also be that Bjorn's memory loss illness has caused him to evolve slightly differently. I think he always had a tendency to look at practical problems but he seems to be more of a business person now than ever.
However, Agnetha seems like a totally different person these days. Young Agnetha seemed to have boundless happiness in her smiles and in her body language. Now she seems to have a contented look but it never persists entirely -- sort of like a partial mask and there seems to be a theme of sadness or depression in every expression, even when she smiles. Young Agnetha demonstrated the most enthusiasm of the four of them --that just does not seem to be there any more -- and its not just age. And looking back I feel like there are 3 or 4 different Agnethas -- the Agnetha from 1967 to 1977 -- happy, fun, optimistic, enthusiastic. That Agnetha loved performing in front of audiences -- and she enjoyed using her voice. The Agnetha from 1978 to 1988 -- Putting on a brave face and working very hard, but not optimistic and less fun - she seems nearly empty, almost like a programmed person going through the motions. Then there is the Agnetha from 89 to 2004 -- almost completely a recluse. She lost her love of music and performing and was in "I just want to be alone" mode - I am tempted to say she was in a deep depression going from one poor relationship to another. And then the post 2004 Agnetha - a matter of fact, no-nonsense, but a nice person with the ability to sort of let things go or at least compartment them away. She found her music again, but it was not joyful and many of her best songs were regretful and sad songs. This is the Agnetha that persists and the positive songs she sings were written by others -- but at least she is singing!
