      Thanks so much, Benny! 🙏 Thoroughly enjoyed transcribing this, the amount of language packed in, coupled with the joy and evident love of this music is something the jazz world could do with more of! Way too much competitiveness and seriousness these days when at the end of the day, it's all music man, we just wanna connect! So yeah, thanks again! ✌ Bebop does indeed rule and I've put it on my horn so a Transcription Tuesday is coming tomorrow! 🙌

    • @tommyhodgman4102
      @tommyhodgman4102 3 месяца назад +2

      I’m not sure it’s a specific line or quote, but the melodic approach within those specific chord changes is something that can be commonly used, so you may have heard a similar melodic “color” like this before! It’s a really nice line, and music theory wise, you can learn a lot about simple voice leading and language by analyzing that short passage. Going from the Dm7b5 to G7b9, Benny is simply using the C harmonic minor scale (C minor with a raised 7th). This mends extremely well to these changes, as the “color” notes that we are hearing are chord tones (defined as 3rd, 7ths, and any additional notated extensions within a given chord) Dm7b5 and G7b9. The B natural, and Ab being the most prominent at the beginning of the line, which are both chord tones of G7b9, the V7 of i. When the Cm7 comes along, there is a little bit of a delayed resolution, as the first note sung within the Cm7 is an F, which is not a chord tone of Cm7, which tells us that melodically, Benny may be extending the line from before. In the second measure of the Cm7, you can see that the line has been resolved, but Benny immediately goes right into the sound of the next chord change, by descending down to a D natural, resolving into the 3rd (Db) of the Bbm7 in the next measure. It’s a very nice line, and is a simple yet effective way to navigate your way through a minor 2-5-1! Playing the harmonic minor scale based on the i7 through a ii7b5-V7b9-i7 is a great sound, and is definitely worth spending some time practicing and getting into your improvisational sound!! Cheers!

      Yeah, common chromatic ii-V which makes standard ii-V's more interesting. Pianist's do this a lot even when it's not the 'written' changes, but 'written' examples include Blues For Alice Bars 6-8. The chords here are: 47: F#m7 (B7) 48: Fm7 Bb7. Wasn't transcribing the chords when I did this, just wrote the changes I knew, but this is what they're doing. 👍
