  • SUSPENSION EXPLAINED SPACERS IMPORTANT INFORMATION spacers Maybe used sometimes were very small lift is required. But I don’t like it.
Fourby4diesel. Toyota Prado Toyota Hilux Toyota diesel Dobinson suspension select the right suspension is better than using a spacer.
Why you shouldn’t use a suspension spacer. Where can I buy a Suspension Spacer. Do not buy a suspension spacer. When I use a suspension spacer or lift kit do I need to increase my bump stops.

The problem is the use of aftermarket shocks that are extended. I think you'll find those Dobinson's are about 15mm longer than a stock shock and if you add a spacer to them they will do damage. A small spacer with stock suspension (5-10mm) is generally okay.

Pacer lift per mm of thickness will vary per vehicle.
If you measure from the pivot point of the lower control arm to the shock mount center point and then measure from the shock mount to the ball joint center that will give you the info you need to work out the actual lift on your vehicle.
On my R51 those figures are 22cm and 12cm.
12 divided by 22 = 0.545 so if you multiply the spacer thickness by 1.545 that gives you the actual lift.
In my case a 5mm spacer gives 7.725mm lift.
A 10mm spacer would give me 15.45mm lift.
The issue is that the standard studs are only long enough for a 5mm spacer so that is my max size without resorting to the spacers that have separate mounting studs.
Those are thicker than I would use. I already have a 30mm lift from my Dobinson springs on Bilstein shocks.

If a top hat spacer is fitted above the strut, to achieve the aforesaid "lift", then the static equilibrium point would still shift down. But would the strut's extended length also cause the down travel to increase beyond the previous droop limit. Would this mean that the wheel travel in this case is not conserved and has increased? (by an amount equal to spacer thickness) ?
Thanks for the video and effort in explaining it practically.

I’ve got standard rated 2 inch lift and after getting a bullbar and winch need to correct the 1.5cm nose dip. Adjusted the spring seat as shown in one of your videos but now they ride too stiff due to increased preload I think. What’s the best way to get this matter solved add a spacer or swap out spring to 100kg rated ones? Second option would be least preferred as I’ve already spent money on the lift.

Hey Anthony, what about in the situation where I am kitting out my brand new Prado GXL with all-Australia-Touring kit which is going to add a fair bit of weight front and rear, and all I want to do is compensate for the settling of the suspension under full load when on tour? Let's say it settles 20mm, but I want the car to travel with Standard Original Ride Height. I thought a 10mm front and 20mm rear spacer would do the job. Do you think it's a bad idea?

Hi Anthony, thanks for an interesting and informative video. I have upgraded my IFS/Leaf suspension D40 Navara to include winch & bar, but I am looking to get rid of the rake and have the vehicle sit flat. In this scenario, and based on what you have said, my strut spacers would have to be half of the difference between front and rear, so 20 mm diff would equate to a 10mm spacer to have the wheel arch gap be the same front and rear? Cheers mate.
