- Some have called it America's worst city. But is there more to the story? I visited the best of Oakland California for 72 hours to see if it's really like they say on TV.
None of this is fact checked, so consider all 'facts' approximate. LMK in the comments what I got wrong.

That just shows someone stuck in a comfort zone. Unwilling to expand their outlook
The Bay Area is like heaven and hell combined
Perfectly said
Nope just hell 😂
its called the city of angles for a reason
No, just hell. Try being white living here. The irony is not lost on me.
the word you’re looking for is “dystopia”
Spend 72 hours in East Oakland.
people that live in better conditions just ignore other peoples problems
72 hours on International Blvd
This is the only comment he didn’t like😭😭
@@karkevicius lol
east oakland isnt that bad
If we can get competent leadership that's willing to address all the problems here, Oakland could be one of this country's great cities.
That’s a massive “if.” But I completely agree.
*voters. Fixed.
Watch out for corporate interests. The "development" industry seeks to gut this place for all it's worth.
Yeah. Ain't never gonna happen.
The voters get what they vote for. Maybe they could try voting conservative for once
Only accurate Oakland RUclips doc type video thank u for not bashing us like everyone else😂
Thank you!
Shame that BlueBottle got bought out by Nestle. The company that has said water is not a human right.
I certainly don't frequent Blue Bottle, haven't been since I made this video actually. But I've got to admit, the people there were very nice to me.
This video deserves so much more views than the amount it has
That means a lot! I still have to figure out a title and thumbnail that makes sense for this video which could help!
The internet: "Oakland is a nightmare hellscape"
Me, an oaklander: *looks out the window at trees and wildflowers, birds chirping, butterflies flying around*
Me: yeah it's AWFUL don't come here
yeah and at night what do you hear out those windows? car speakers blasting and cars burning out. yeah I used to live in oakland before it was bad, so im sure its real bad now lol
So much good stuff going on in Oakland. There are huge problems... and so many reasons to stay.
@@AdamDoesNotExist lol yes go ahead and walk downtown anytime past dark and I'm sure youd love to "stay"

I really like this and the San Francisco video really gives you a sense of the area
Thank you! That was my goal. Give a fair, but positive overview of the area.
The BEST video on current day Oakland I have seen yet bro! NEW SUBSCRIBER and I look forward to seeing more of your content! 💪🏻
Awesome! Thank you!
I live in Alameda, and I used to frequent in Oakland a lot. Did not know most of these places were there. Awesome video.
Thank you!
I’ve really enjoyed many of the experiences I’ve had in Oakland, but the city is in a situation now where the odds are too high that I’ll become a crime victim. Not worth it for me no matter how good the coffee, beer, bagel and arts scene is there.
You'll only be a victim if you move like one
Yeah, just don't leave anything in your car, and you should be fine.
Imagine that. No way the owners would ever let that happen, but man would it change things.
Great video, and appropriately "confusing" in that, yes, Oakland provides so much culture and wonderful dining opportunities and eclectic shops, yet, it's difficult to feel safe. I LOVE Oakland. I HATE Oakland. We have stayed in Oakland a few times. Last August, we saw a wonderful concert at Frank Ogawa Square. I know the mayor is fighting to keep the A's, yet, the city failed to submit for that crime-fighting grant from the state, angering residents. A big WTF!?? It's unlikely we will stay in Oakland again, unfortunately, as our "luck" has been good there, but it may be only a matter of time before we are not so lucky.
You said in a few sentences what took me a 14 minute video. There’s so much to love about Oakland, the Bay Area, and NorCal (you already know that 🙂). But in some places, it has become increasingly disappointing and frustrating.
You earn your self a subscriber. Good content. Im from San Francisco btw.
Awesome thank you!
Cool video. I live here and I hate it but I loved your video!
Thank you! I know exactly how you feel. You gotta find stuff you love because there is so much here.
Yall should just move to Austin or something

Thank you for this video!! 🎉
I just watched all your Oakland A's videos and your tenderloin video as well. I like your style, I'm subscribed now.
I have family in Oakland near Berkley and I've loved the time I've spent there visiting even though I have seen some of the uglier parts. I feel some kinship with Oakland having lived in Detroit for a while, I know what it's like to only have the negative parts of your city talked about by outsiders. Yes there are problems that shouldn't be ignored (and unfortunately don't seem to be getting better anytime soon) but there are beautiful, enjoyable parts as well.
Glad to have you here! If you want big problems, we've got them here in Oakland. But just like Detroit, there are some great reasons that people still live here!
I love Oakland. I lived in West Oakland, on Piedmont Ave and in jack london square. I truly am missing it. But I had a child and decided to move to Dublin, CA. And when we’re ready to buy a house, Portland. Thanks for such a positive Oakland video.
That makes a lot of sense to me. Having kids in a place like this could be really tough.
Can you list all the places you visited in your description.
Thanks for making this video. I live here as well.
I might try, there were certainly a lot of them! Glad you liked it!!
Born and raised in Oakland, I love this place. Despite differing opinions on certain parts, I still appreciate the light and love that Oakland has to offer.
G'day Adam.
Watching right now all the from 🇲🇾.
Thank you for sharing.
I hope you doing great

Thanks Jagdip! Hope you liked the video!!!

I’ve lived here my whole life and never been to most of the places you tried, cool to have some new recommendations!
Hope you like some of them!
I'm going to check out that bagel spot. Thanks for the tip.
They have two locations now!
I have grown up here and am getting ready to fly half way across the country for college. You have brought back memories I forgot I had at many of these places. Thanks😂😅
07:16 Children’s Fairyland wasn’t the only Bay Area gem that inspired Walt Disney. The Redwood Valley Steam Trains inspired Walt to build the Disneyland Railroad. The Steam Trains are on state land and is technically in Orinda, but is only accessible through Oakland.
Oakland's amazing, but the problem with going there constantly is the theft and damage to your car and attacks that will likely happen if you visit or work there often.
I've riden limes, bar hopped, worked, dined and had a great time in Oakland. To me it wasn't very different than my hometown. My youngest was born in Oakland.
Anyway, great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Much respect with showing the bright sides of Oakland California. But with me being on Oakland native and having some random guy try to murder me for no apparent reason so even though I live out here I do not hang out anywhere in Oakland.
That's a really frustrating and bizarre feeling. I get it.
Thank you for showing some of west Oakland and Downtowns best spots! But Oakland is freaking huge too!! I get why you didn’t go but not even one shot of international blvd?? Fruitvale?? Temescal?? College, rock ridge? Montclair?
Montclair is in there. There are so many neighborhoods, an no way to cover them all in three days!
@@AdamDoesNotExist Visit International Blvd. Good Mexican food there.
Went to Oakland for like the first time ever, might've been once but probably too young to remember. But anyways we were chillin in the car after going for a short walk around and I look behind me and I see the car parked behind us get broken into, dude jumps in through the back window, ran sacks everything and takes off.
First time there remember, Oakland is in fact wild and you are guaranteed to see something wild if you go there for the first time too.
11:27 This poem is so lovely :)
Thank you! That means a lot!
Rare to see some good representation on the bay area on this site.
Someone had to say something positive!
I’ll be going to Oakland in July, I’ll try some of these spots that were mentioned in the video
Living close to Oakland and watching it morphe over time has been wild but this mskes me wanna give it a second chance and check out some of the amazing stuff.
this is so weird man it's like an episode of my life
I used to play volleyball in Chinatown Oakland and I loved eating there.
So many good restaurants!
Born and raised in Oakland. Have lived almost my entire adult life in Oakland as well. Thank you for sharing the side of Oakland that the news networks never show. Yeah, Oakland has its problems, but I don’t think Oaklands problems are that different from any other major cities. I have blown the minds of several out of state friends of mine when I show them the real Oakland
There are so many sides to Oakland!
As an oaklander, you sir, know the sauce hahah ty for the great video!
Thank you!
Thanks for showing the parts of my home that the media ignores. Oakland has so many beautiful spots, but it does have lots of problems as well. It wasn't always this way. We need better leaders to clean it up.
I completely agree
Check out Aburaya downtown, dope af japanese fried chicken place. Born n raised in Oakland, nice vid.
I've been many times. Great spot!
Only 35k views?? This video is really underrated...
I love Oakland. You cant just wander off into anyhood but its so beautiful and diverse. They have a chinatown that be poppin too
Chinatown is sick! It's in this video quite a bit!
Oakland is a beautiful place but getting there from SF without a car is more painful that it needs to be.
Me who lives in the bay are casually going about my day while this chaos unfolds
As someone who's lived in the Bay area in my entire life I only normally take day trips to Oakland but now I feel quite inclined to move there
It's a complicated place. But there's still a lot to love.
"Yep. NOPE!"--E40
Whenever we did a road trip on our way back we knew we were home when we saw the mormón temple, Oakland is good place not all neighborhoods are bad, the sad thing is some.of the younger folk are proud of it's infamy, and do everything they can to keep it, not to mention the people that come from outside just to add to the mix.
Some of the brazen misbehavior is pretty wild.
Oakland has always been a rough city. The problem is nobody is doing anything about crime.
When you mentioned Shan Dong I knew this was legit
Shan Dong is so good. I could eat there every day!
No way bro hiked bridgeview thats my go-to when im tryna get to Montclair 😭 (yeah there’s a bus but 2.25 fare these days is insane)
Yes way!
This doesnt change my mind about oakland, but these were some spots that i didn't even know existed. Ill probably go check them out
Oakland has some gems!
Oakland is a place where people become unfaze of the craziness that goes down. If it doesnt bother me than i dont give a piece. I believe all of the spots he gone through is West Oakland, basically the better side. No Fruitvale, no East Oakland, no Oakland Hills. He mentions some of negative topics that arises throughout Oakland but doesnt go deep. Homeless, car breaking, fetanyl, street parties. Oakland is a decent place if you remember that every city has a bad side, like LA and SF.
Been stabbed, shot, recently had my house shot up by some random people for tiktok clout the other day. Still wouldn’t leave though, I’ll be bay for life even if I end up a victim of crime!
Damn. That's dedication!
Man I was really hoping for a Yoshis appearance 😭😭😭
I thought about it! But they don't like cameras in there, understandably, and there was only one show the nights I filmed this.
highly recommend Channel 5's 'Philly Streets' video
Oakland and Berkeley are unique cities and gentrification isn't the same as it is in other places, it's a very real part of what's happening to us. As much as I appreciate this video, this video needs more than "Oakland is more than just what's on the news", we need to address the news and its part to play in pushing people out of their homes. All of these places are nice but as you mentioned every time, everything is "a little overpriced". We have to make sure that we aren't letting people be "outpriced" out of their homes.
Great points! He did a video in SF called Jack the Bipper that's also worth a watch
i have a love hate relationship with Oakland, having lived there up until high school, it was fantastic. The amount of diversity in culture allows for so many unique experiences, however, the crime drove my family out. Sometimes we would be scared to go on walks, having passed by numerous drive by scenes. I lives right next to Lake Merit and the Haddon Hill cafe near me would constantly be robbed, a reason we wouldn't go. When I am old enough and have enough money, I am definitely considering moving back just because of how much I love the city
Love hate is kind of the only way to have a relationship with Oakland. Haddon Hill Cafe is in a really nice area. I'm surprised to hear they're crime victims as well.
I’ve been to oakland plenty. Obviously not *everywhere* is awful, there’s a lot of good, but it’s interesting how there can be really nice parts of the city very juxtaposed right next to really bad parts.
I’m from New York, for ME people are not very friendly here. I’m assuming they assume I may be homeless just because I’m black and because that seems to be a thing here. Sorry Oakland, NO. Black people are in much better condition on the east coast and are not treated like like second class citizens like they are here. The dismissive energy and micro aggressions I’ve experienced here are amazing. I’m so out out here!
I’m so sorry to hear that
Oakland has so much good food and crazy nice geography… BUT FUCK MAN, CRIME IS SO BAD… but people are really nice and there’s so much to do. It just sucks that you can’t park anywhere and you can’t look like you have money.
I feel this so strongly. Oakland's location is perfect. It could be so incredible.
First time watcher, first time subscriber! I don't live in Oakland, but thank you for demonstrating great places to explore when visiting
This video was perfection
Thank you!
When I saw an Oakland resident proudly wearing a shirt that said “Keep Oakland Woke Land “ I knew it wasn’t going to end well.
Ps. For those in the bay not close enough to oakland the Hotboys in Walnut Creek is amazing with a great staff.
I've been to that one and agree, it's just as good!
The Bird in SF is really good too.
Gee, I wonder what's making big cities worse and worse
Ive done that walk to Jack London Square at night its not that bad
Not bad at all
Hell yeah. I went to both Theo and Ed Sheeran 😅 Get more people here and make Oakland better! We need their money!!
I live 20 miles away from Oakland. I'm still not visiting.
I love Shandong restaurant!
Me too!
I was born in Oakland, have lived the majority of my life there, and currently live in Oakland. Yes the crime is really fucking bad, but there are also so many reasons to stay. I've been to most of these places but that bar at Jack London is new to me. I can't believe you showed the new parkway, but not the gorgeous nearly century old Grand Lake Theater. The Grand Lake may be the most beautiful movie theater in the world. The Grand Lake was also next to Kwik Way, a legendary burger spot that unfortunately closed down permanently when I was in high school. :(
There is a quick clip of grand lake in there. They don't really turn the lights on inside any more so the footage I have wasn't usable.
Fyi royal and cole coffee is the same provider
I had no idea. Thanks for sharing!
Yes pretty much it is the slums, some niec areas, mostly not.
wait I'm in Palo Alto and someone brought Boichik bagels to work. they're good I guess but i only got a bagel and cream cheese
I still think NYC has better bagels. but the NY Times doesn't agree!
my favorite is going to hotboys and while my order gets cooked going to the comic book store nearby
Hotboys was so good 5 years ago. Nowadays they’re hit or miss. Best chicken sando spot imo is Angry Chickz🔥🔥🔥
I'll check it out, thanks for the rec!
9:29 60$ for a plate of bbq is wild af. Amazing video tho man!
Yeah, I'd rather go to Stay Gold in West Oakland or Canyons in Castro Valley.
Soooo expensive. I dont' regret it... but I haven't been back.
@@AdamDoesNotExist I get it. I went once recently. The food was hella good there but waaaaay overpriced.
Bout 87 degrees today brother I’m boiling
I use to deliver Alcohol all over the east bay . One time I delivered to Agave uptown and the owner was talking to some investors and he got mad that I didn’t know where the delivery zone was at. I was like what a fucking sellout gentrified asshole. But I did see someone break into a car that had two suitcases just out in the open they did it at 1:40pm like nothing 😭😭 I love oakland
Heck yeah!
Awesome video. Oakland is still the biggest shithole in the world but this gives me hope that with some good leadership it can be great again
Thanks, I agree!
Do a video with an asian elder in Oakland and how they feel about their safety
You'd probably get a similar result from just about anyone who lives in Oakland.
duuuude, how could you leave out dayslikethis at lake merrit !!?
I left out a lot! Some things are better left off the internet imo
@@AdamDoesNotExist I feel that. As an IRL streamer that often goes to oakland, you did show a lot of what's around. Great job!

i love the town
I lived between 13th and Jefferson and did not know most of these places 😂. Although it’s because I don’t like the city too much. Well any city tbh
Oakland, like many other large urban cities, has its good and bad. The good FAR OUTWEIGH the bad. Stop hating on Oakland. It is a very trendy, cultural, fun, and beautiful city in the Bay.
Well said!
5:10 music is too loud to hear your voice
You didn't come to East Oakland
Yeah Just the coli
I lived in Oakland
Are there a lot of vampires? Why nothing to do at night? lol
I turn into a pumpkin at night
Bay Area government isn't trying to help any of the problems. Oakland has more culture because of what has happened here and the people who call it home; but improvement needs to happen. Crime rates aren't a failure of individuals, it's a failure of the system. All of the improvements have been community based.
WE LOVE THE BAY AREA thank you for this!!!
Thank you!
Oakland could use about two years of Bukele.
LOL!
It is not worth saving
The community is great but the raging foke on the 1T is not so great lol(speaking as an oakland native)
WTH, do i live in the best city in america?! Zamn
Maybe!?
smhh oaklandish isn’t even from oakland, they’re based in brooklyn. wish a local shop had as much attention that oaklandish gets D:
Really? I thought they were started by a local artist, and print all their stuff in Oakland. They certainly give a whole lot back to the community, so they're great in my book!
3:30 80 degrees is NOT pretty much perfect, you're insane! I think 65 to maybe 68 is perfect
I'm with you. Most of the year it's well below 80.
72 hours in Detroit!!
That's a great idea honestly
Who still has their I. Magnin credit card?
Very difficult to hear what you were saying at certain points in the video.
