CORRECTION: The correct adapter to use is a M32.5 to M42 x0.5 step up ring to attach a new helicoid. There is a typo leaving off the .5 and unfortunately I had a drive corrupt and can't easily make the edit.

This is a hyper speed look at how I remove the Yashica 45mm f1.4 lens from the Lynx 14 camera and convert to Leica M mount. Important to note for those interested in doing this, the lock ring to remove the helicoid (referred to as the hell ring in this video) is very hard to remove and I had to create a custom tool for it after ruining the tips of a few spanner wrenches. There could be a better tool for it but I haven't found it. I simply measured the ring, bought the closest size socket head I could find and used a dremel to cut the four grooves out.
Also worth noting, using a little loctite on the helicoid threading when attaching to the lens will help secure it so it isn't able to unscrew itself during use.
The adapter ring I use is an M32.5 to M42 X0.5 step up. The helicoid is M42-M42 and the length depends on which mount you are going to. In this case, going to Leica M, it must be very short to achieve infinity focus so the lens does not get great close focus and has a very short focus throw. Other mounts I've converted to are Leica L, Sony E and Canon RF.
This modification only works with short flange lens mounts. Unfortunately, the helicoid would have to be inside the mount to make this lens work with something like EF or PL, something that can really only be achieved with rehousing or some voodoo engineering that I haven't had the courage to try yet.

OH! A new lens to convert! LOL!
I've done this with a Konica Hexanon 47mm f1.9 and a Mansfield Mantinar f2.8 (which is a wild lens to use. It only has 4 blades for the aperture and so the bokeh balls are funky when slightly stopped down. Square!) Its a very colorful and sharp lens. The Hexanon is another cool lens.
I already own a proper M42 mount Yashinon-DS f1.7 that I love to use. But this would be a fun project to create a DX f1.4 to M42. I already own the helicoids. This looks like another good one to try!
Professional!!! I have the same hobby, but I'm less skilled than you. Most of all, I envy the tool at 2:57. Did you make it yourself? Especially for all Yashica lenses, it's really hard to release the ring.
Hi Michael! What’s the size of the m42 to m42 adapter you used to adapt to Leica M? Also, which adapter you used from M42 to Leica M? Did you have to add any shim to able to achieve infinity focus? Thanks!
Ola boa noite!! Onde consigo esse mount para adaptar ?
Many Thanks for sharing the video. I am trying this same mod and am stuck at removing the four key "heil" or "hell" retaining ring in the back. Soaking with acetone using a long syringe is not helping to unseat the ring. Just to ask, what was the socket size you modified to get the thing off? Would I be right in guessing that all Electro 35 GS/GT lenses have this same cast iron metal weight + helicoid in the back of them (and the same type of "hell" ring as well to retain the weight/helicoid)? Also, there is inside surface fungus in the front and rear groups, rear group has a way to separate the elements, but no such thing I see with the front group, looks sealed. Maybe there is a hidden joint obscured by the paint coating....
I don’t think I’ve ever opened the front group. It is definitely glued.
As far as the ring, I will have to measure when I’m at the office. For some reason, some of them come off with no effort and some of them are impossible. The metal in there is brittle so it is easily to bend and then it is impossible. Wish I could be more help on that!
These are super hard to do kudos
Awesome!! Great video!! Thanks!! So you know were i should search for an helicoid for m42 or eos ef? (better m42) And what should i look for (size to keep infinit and others you consider)
THANNKSS!!
Hi, you can't adapt this lens to EF and get infinity focus without rehousing it. Otherwise, the optics would need to be behind the lens mount. There are lots of good M42 helicoid options on Ebay.
Great video and thank you for sharing. I would like to try my hand at this conversion going to sony e, what helicoid did you use for that, same step ring I guess but what helicoid. Would love to know. Have a great day.
Hi, you should be good with a 25-50mm or 25-55mm M42 helicoid and a slim M42 to Sony E adapter. I believe infinity will be just over 30mm so there are options.
great video mate, for sony mount should i use a m42 to sony e mount macro helicoid?
Yes, that works. There are several thicknesses of M42 to E mount. I have seen them from 1mm to 5mm. So you can make this work with any M42-M42 helicoid with an M42 to E. I don't have anything in front of me at the moment, but will let you know what size helicoids I have used for E mounts when I'm at my office later.
25-50mm is what I use for Leica L, which is the same flange distance as Sony E.
This is super cool! But why do you remove the shutter leaves? And how do you get them back in??
Oh wait i was getting shutter confused with aperture - I see they are just redundant so are removed
I see you answered your own question, but yes, they aren't needed once adapted. Also, you can jam the shutter open by putting the lens in bulb mode, holding the shutter to open it, then sliding the setting out of bulb. The problem with that is it sometimes pops back closed. If it happened in the middle of using the lens on a shoot, you'd be in trouble as it isn't a quick fix.
Thank you for the answer!@@koshkinland I have this camera on order and keen to try this, I think removing the shutter leaves sounds most sensible for reliability on a shoot.
What are the differences between doing this and adapting it to Sony E? Does the process change at all?
The process doesn't change if you're swiping out the helicoid. There are some people who have drilled, glued or bought adapter pieces to use the native helicoid so you are connecting the E mount to the metal on the back of the lens. The problem with that is the close focus is pretty bad...
@@koshkinlandwhere are you buying these helicoids? Is there a good place to find them for going to Sony E? Does it have to be a certain size?
Awesome tutorial thx. So it's m42 mount in the end?
This one is Leica M. You can do M42, M39, L, M, E, M43, RF…anything with a short flange that can be adapted from an M42 helicoid really.
Any chance you have a video on reassembling the aperture? :D
I have never had any luck reassembling the iris when leaves have come loose. If it is just that the iris doesn't react the culprit is often that the peg has popped out of the groove. Once helicoid is off and you turn the iris you'll see an assembly moving. Sometimes the little pin that goes in the slot, gets bent or pops out. You can often bend it back into place to get the iris working again. But as far as full disassembly and reassembly, I haven't had luck.
Gosh, this guy is a lens/camera butcher and you expect him to put anything back as it was??? :))). Someone commented "cery professional". Where the heck is the professionalism here?
Hi pal, thank you, that's help me a lot for servicing my Electro GT' lens. The only one vids perfect and precise ! I also have to build a tool for this f@#€*":&€ ring 😂😂
Best regards
Ben
Where do do find the m32 to m42 screw?
www.ebay.com/itm/274577705299
It is actually m32.5 x m42. I will update
tool you used at 2.53 minutes.. looks like adapted socket, please can I have info on it.
it's explained in the description
@@kekeslider thank you wow , that is a hit and miss adventure.
how to buy any part of these?
You can find most of it on EBay.
