sure, this is a sad song. but i was just in this show my local theater, and it ended a month ago. one of my closest friends played miss honey and she was phenomenal. i miss the show, and this song just hits different for me.
This song and musical got me through some of my darkest moments (me and Matilda and miss honey have very similar stories) and I get to play miss honey this year. I seriously have no idea how I’m going to get through this song without balling my eyes out every night

Looking at my little house one day, this song came into my mind and I was hit with all the feels. Currently trying to get a real estate license just so i can help other people find their forever homes too, even if they're not much, so long as they're enough.... for you.

Not my favourite rendition. She has a lovely voice, and it's a lovely song, but she makes it too dreary. I see this song in a totally different light. The house is Miss Honey's first step into independence, her first huge step away from Trunchball and her past. The lyrics scream healing and hope after neglect and cruelty, and Alison misses all of that and portrays it as self-pity. I prefer a Miss Honey, who learns, through Matilda, to fight the creatures under the bed each night. This is HER house, HER choice, the start of HER life. She says very clearly that there is nowhere she would rather be. I just prefer that interpretation. Self-pity leaves me cold, it is triumph over adversity which really brings tears to my eyes.
I agree with your interpretation. Her voice is so very lovely, but I also see this song as a step toward healing rather than an expression of grief. I was just blessed with the opportunity to play this role and intend to sing My House with the same quiet, but palpable hope I had when I began to escape the abuse and pain that plagued my own life. I relate to Miss Honey so much and feel so honored to be able to step into her shoes for the next few months.
@mashpotatomezzo My granddaughter sang it as one of the songs for her grade 5 singing exam back in March. She wanted so badly to play Matilda when she was 9 and sang both Naughty and then Quiet in her previous 2 exams. She's now 14 and given up all hope of ever playing Matilda on stage, so her ambition now is to play Trunchball. I doubt that will happen either. She looks more like a Miss Honey, but I guess makeup and padding can do a lot. She sang My House as an expression of her personality. She says she feels the house itself is a metaphor for herself. The objects in it are her interests and character, the fire is her spirit, which never falters, however awful the circumstances. The song itself is a more adult way of saying,' Even if you're little, you can do a lot '. She got a distinction, so she must have done something right. But she would nevertheless so envy you the opportunity to sing it on stage. Maybe she will be lucky enough to do so one day. .

Yeah the first time I saw a bootleg of this show (original cast) and miss Honey put the scarf around Matilda's neck I almost lost it.
It's like she's using it to protect Matilda from the same thing happening to her. It's like a shield she's putting around her.
