It's crazy how this TGIF line up is the one that always sticks out in my mind from my childhood. Also, the time travel TGIF crossover with all four shows was a highlight!!!
This is one of my favorite episodes of Boy Meets World, despite me not having watched a single episode in about a decade. The character of Millie is a) hot and b) obviously inspired by a number of Drew Barrymore characters during the 90's
I remember thinking I was going to go back and rewatch Sabrina and find it very corny, but I was pleasantly surprised that it still holds up as an entertaining show.
There were like 3 different Sabrina Halloween episodes. The first one you covered in your 1996 Halloween recap. The third one is like a murder mystery on a train. This is my favorite Sabrina Halloween episode of the three.
Oh how i miss these days! I wish i could watch a whole TGIF lineup somewhere, as well as SNICK! #1985baby Are you afraid of the Dark? was a definite fave!
Those Capri Sun things always felt like they were ripping off The Secret World of Alex Mack to me. (Staying in the 90's and everything with my reference xD)
Our little tradition was to get pizza, watch tgif & then the few movies rented from blockbuster. I vaguely remember the pizza wars, but specifically remember when one of the chains had this giant football shaped pizza promo that I begged my mom to get. And I could not miss an episode of Sabrina when I was a kid. I loved that show so much!
4:35 10,000 Maniacs are from the Buffalo area. Nick Bakay, writer and voice of Salem the Cat is also from Buffalo. Natalie Merchant had already left the band by this time, becoming bigger solo than anything she did with the band. The band had therefore become irrelevant and this was their last brush of fame.
Learning something new every day! I had to do a quick Google because when you said “Natalie Merchant” for some reason I thought about the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks.
@@AmoMe2009 gosh I am 35 and the last time I watched the show had to be when it was still on tv!!! I know that I was never really a fan of Angel so that stuff and his show never really interested me. Also when she got a “sister” hahaha by that time the show was pretty much done for me.
Wow, this brought back some childhood memories. I was loved Halloween and Sabrina as a kid. My black cat's name was even Salem. I forgot the girl from Full House was on Boy Meets World. Happy Halloween.
TGIF's Frightful Halloween Bash lineup for Friday October 31, 1997 (Halloween). 8pm - Sabrina (new episode: A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It) 8:30pm - Boy Meets World (new episode: The Witches of Pennbrook) 9pm - You Wish! (new episode: Halloween) 9:30pm - Teen Angel (new episode: I Love Nitzke) 10pm - 20/20
I didn't grow up with TV. But I did watch these shows over the years as an adult. That candy corn episode of sabrina the teenage which is my favorite episode. I love boy meets world as well. But my favorite T.G.I.F. Show would have to be full house. It's funny the mention that since D.J. Was a witch in that Boy Meets World 🌎 Episode
I had my wisdom teach pulled on Halloween 1997, which i believe was a Friday. I was home, but I dont think I watched TGIF that night. It was on the decline at that point.
Nice political dig there. How are things today in Brandon-land? BTW, just to enlighten your new fans, Melissa Joan Hart was already a teen favorite just coming off her hit show, Clarissa Explains It All on us Kid's first network, Nickelodeon.
There might not have been TiVo, but they did have these things called VCR’s where you could record a show and watch it later if you weren’t going to be able to watch a particular show when it aired. 😂
I think I just watched Family Matters because nothing else was on, I only like Steve. Full House was THE show, Sabrina I watched because Melissa was Clarissa. Boy meets world was everything and then became number 1 during 2013...Step by Step was iight.
3:43-3:44 Well speaking of that I remember when Sabrina the Teenage Witch reran on The N (later TeenNick) and ABC Family, and watched it in spite of the show's horrible laugh track. It's currently being reran on Fuel and streaming on Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access) and Hulu, I only watched a couple of episodes when it reran there.
So this must the the time when I stopped watching TGIF, I’m a fan of Boy Meets World(but never got around watching till the very end) , I like Sabrina the teenage witch , so by the time the other shows were gone in the lineup, I probably tuned into other programs.
October of 1997 I was stationed in Orlando and sure as shit wasnt watching TV. And you actually though 10,000 Maniacs was a fake band. I hate you for making me feel old.
ABC's TGIF block died beginning in fall 1997, stemming from a combination of aging sitcoms like Family Matters and Step by Step moving to CBS (who started - and ended - their own family-friendly Friday night sitcom line-up in 1997-98 called "The Block Party"), the oversaturation of supernatural/magic type shows (Sabrina the Teenage Witch and new series You Wish and Teen Angel, the latter of which both lasted only one season), the failure of Two of a Kind (which was the last sitcom produced by the previously reliable Miller-Boyett group) starring the Olsen twins the following year (1998-99), and ultimately the ending of Boy Meets World after seven seasons and Sabrina... moving to The WB after the 1999-2000 season. ABC would bring back the TGIF brand for the 2003-05 & 2018-19 seasons, but it never met the same success it had before.
Jerry Van Dyke had been on ABC's Coach and was added to You Wish in hopes of enlivening the ratings... but it was yanked off the air after 7 weeks. Teen Angel fared better and they ordered 5 additional episodes, but TV mom/Brady Maureen McCormick dropped out, so Van Dyke was brought in to round out the cast. The unaired You Wish episodes were burned off the next summer alongside Teen Angel reruns after both shows had been canceled. There was probably overlap with Jerry on a few nights, though not many.
@@rememberwhenchannel I was disappointed that you glossed over those two shows. You Wish belongs on Disney+ (but at least someone put it on the Internet Archive). It's cute and holds up fairly well for what it is. I loved the edgier Teen Angel at the time, but the constant pop-culture references and CGI have dated it in a pretty ghastly way.
