It’s the best! If you decide to go down the mouth call route, get the STRUTT’N Ridge Greenhorn or their Beginner’s Series 3 pack. The greenhorn is the easiest call you will ever use
Used the slate for the first time this morning after watching this. Still need a lot of work but I got one today and talked with him for about 30mins! Good fun! Thanks
Just got my first slate/glass combo call from ESH. This video was extremely helpful, especially knowing striker location on the call and how it changes the tone! Great video.
First time Turkey hunter this year in Wisconsin. How often should I be calling? Like should I call for X amount of seconds and then wait? Should I change how often I do it once I get a gobble? Thanks!
First, thanks for the comment and welcome to an amazing experience in turkey hunting. As for calling there is no right answer. Ideally you are finding a bird that is already gobbling and you can set up on him and call him in. Many times we don’t have that luxury. Most people tend to over call, so I like to start light and infrequent and work to more aggressive. If you know there are birds in the area then that helps even in they aren’t talking. If you are walking trying to strike a gobble then sometimes it makes sense to be more aggressive. Call every 100 yards or so. Once you get a gobble you have to feel him out. In general you want to go back to your Jr High and High School days. Remember what it felt like when girls played hard to get?! Make him feel that way. Let him gobble a few times then call to him. That way you are responding to him and he isn’t responding to you. There is so much that you have to just get out and learn on your own, so just try stuff and see what works. Remember they have tiny brains and short memories so you don’t really have to worry about making mistakes. They will forget soon enough and you will be able to try again!
I just don't like how the surface of the slate and the pen is so sensitive. Sweat, oils from hands, sunscreen, rain, etc. They all have their benefits. The mouth call frees up your hands, and you don't need to worry about the friction surfaces like with a box or slate.
Thank you 🤣 Can’t win ‘em all I guess (especially on RUclips). We develop thick skin and ask for feedback for those that are not just looking to be jerks and want to be helpful. As you can see here we have someone not willing to be helpful! 🤣🤣
Fantastic video. No one wants to watch a 30 minute tutorial, this video is the perfect length imo. Thank you
We try hard to keep our videos to the point. Appreciate the comment and hope you subscribe if your liked that video!
Great advice. I love slate calls. Pot and peg will always be with me in the turkey woods 🙏🦃🇺🇲👍

This is the best slate video I’ve seen on here! Really helpful you included the real turkey noises so we know what to emulate
That means a lot to us! Thanks for the comment, check out some of our hunting videos while you are here 😉
@@WeekendWoodsmen is there a waterproof striker that you recommend?
Honestly, I have never found one. If it gets wet I will just rely on my mouth calls! So always good have those at the ready!
@@WeekendWoodsmen ok thanks!! My first year turkey hunting! I’m excited to try it out

It's easier to just take a pet turkey alone. And toss out a hand full of feed for it.
If it is legal in your state 😉
