Start carrying a zip lock baggie with small treats... call him to you and every time he comes... give him a treat. Make him come to you and sit to get it. After about a month you can wean him Off the treats. It ties about a month for a habit to be really learned

It made my heart soar to see Lefty off the leash. It might be beneficial to teach him immediate recall. If he is food motivated you should be able to train him if done consistently. Some people are terrified of letting their dog loose but untethering your animal gives them such joy it is cruel not to, IMO. There is always a danger but I am sure that Lefty enjoys the freedom, just work on his "come" command...and enjoy your life!

I'd take her out to the Zoo city park, huge area, in the winter time, no humans were out there...so I'd let her run free...she would come back to me when I whistled... I'd let her go til she was just a speck on the horizon...then let out a special whistle...and she would come running...great exercise. Huskies are just a bundle of energy...I imagine pit bulls are also. keep up the good videos. later my man...and Lefty.

The key to keeping them by your side is to start when they are very young but they can be trained at an older age to stay by your side the key is food reinforcement something they liked more than anything they eat and keeping the leash right by your side after they get older it takes much more time to make them do that but it can be done. I used to train labs and as I said you start when they are very young teaching them to be right by your side and only leave when you tell them that it is okay. You seem to have the time you just need to have the determination and discipline same as you want him disciplined. Give it a shot it takes plenty of time. Have a great day and stay safe! TQ out PS one-word commands are all they really need but in the same breath I also realize that he is your best friend and the only person you have to talk to besides the camera or us but just remember one-word commands you can talk to him all you want to but one word command you get used to it as will you. And you're right you did kind of overdo it with the good boy

Or, they call 911 first and report felony assault with a deadly weapon. Ands the cops bust you--because your gun looked real, and that's all that counts.

He won't roam to far away from you unless he sees another animal then he may become distracted. He seems very latched onto you especially since you said he runs to find you if you hide on him. Either way he is a beautiful looking dog with a great temperament and obviously loves his daddy, through time as he gets older he will get to the point of walking a couple of strides in front of you, he seems still very young puppy like, he is just trying to run off his extra energy such a happy dog.

Just a FYI... if you haven't noticed it when you are off leash, your boy is giving you a safe zone to walk in.. back and forth in front of you while you are walking. Nose on the ground. also, to much reinforcement, talk to him, save some of those "good boys" for later... when he stops to check on you, give him a command to stay, walk up to him and then give him positive reinforcement.. when he stops to check on you, you can change direction of walk, Without walking up to him.. I use the command "this way" and point, you don't wait for him change direction, walk off, he will follow. You should also figure out a return command that you use whether it's "here, heal, come" etc.. calling him to return to you at least 5 or 6 times on the exercise walk, get him to know that coming to you from a distance after being called is a good thing that doesn't always end with him being put back on leash. Which you can also leash him a couple of times during the walk if he ventures to far.. .. ... your BB gun, not something that you should count on for a defensive weapon. My boy is 104lbs and very capable of protecting me.. I wouldn't want to rely on a bb gun to protect him...

Wondering what the key is to keep Lefty by your side. I don't know that but...
I used to have little dogs when I was 20 and silly me would yell "come back!" or go to chase and grab them fast when I caught up to them. Dumb! They'd shoot off again.
The ones I have now I've made sure to never do that. If they ever get loose the first thing I grab is their cookies and then calmly follow them giving positive reinforcement the same way you do and saying "cookie? Wanna cookie?" Shake shake of the bag. Then I throw some cookies the final 15 feet for them to eat then I calmly saunter over and pick them up.
Maybe with Lefty take his FAVORITE treat ever with you. When you really need him back, pull it out. Make him know you got the goods and plan to deliver. Lol

@@TomJourneysAdventures This is the one that Lefty has been wearing for 8 years (we're on the 3rd). I only ever replaced them because they were looking worn on the edges - they've never failed or broken and, believe me, he tests them for durability!!! amzn.to/3XzXWjm He wears the medium and they are widely adjustable for exact fit.

Plenty of good dog trainers & videos. "Heel" should take less than an hour to learn. Then just keep reinforcing it. The longer you wait, the harder training is. Go for "canine good citizen" certification if you can.
When he leads you, that be exerting pack dominance, which can lead to all sorts of problems. He should only go run off if given permission to do so.

Ok your out in the middle of the desert and your using a .177 cal co2 for protection....... no way that’s not going to save your life especially against a person or persons all tweaked out on drugs. And as far as your dog goes barking helps you get ready for possible trouble and that’s it. I’ve been boondocking in the sticks for 40 years and have come across some real bad people. Please take care we all want you and your pup to be safe.
