Am a dog person myself so I enjoy Lefty, too. My dog Jethro, Maynard and I might be seeing you guys one day in the near future...
Letting him run free is great for him but I need to help him with training more, I'm working on it with him. Snakes are a concern during season, weather, location - and I don't let him off leash in those settings. Thank you for watching us :)
I think it’s great to let Lefty off the leash in situations like that. I let my cat out of the RV for a few hours around sunset. She stays pretty close.
Just a FYI... if you haven't noticed it when you are off leash, your boy is giving you a safe zone to walk in.. back and forth in front of you while you are walking. Nose on the ground. also, to much reinforcement, talk to him, save some of those "good boys" for later... when he stops to check on you, give him a command to stay, walk up to him and then give him positive reinforcement.. when he stops to check on you, you can change direction of walk, Without walking up to him.. I use the command "this way" and point, you don't wait for him change direction, walk off, he will follow. You should also figure out a return command that you use whether it's "here, heal, come" etc.. calling him to return to you at least 5 or 6 times on the exercise walk, get him to know that coming to you from a distance after being called is a good thing that doesn't always end with him being put back on leash. Which you can also leash him a couple of times during the walk if he ventures to far.. .. ... your BB gun, not something that you should count on for a defensive weapon. My boy is 104lbs and very capable of protecting me.. I wouldn't want to rely on a bb gun to protect him...
Wondering what the key is to keep Lefty by your side. I don't know that but... I used to have little dogs when I was 20 and silly me would yell "come back!" or go to chase and grab them fast when I caught up to them. Dumb! They'd shoot off again. The ones I have now I've made sure to never do that. If they ever get loose the first thing I grab is their cookies and then calmly follow them giving positive reinforcement the same way you do and saying "cookie? Wanna cookie?" Shake shake of the bag. Then I throw some cookies the final 15 feet for them to eat then I calmly saunter over and pick them up. Maybe with Lefty take his FAVORITE treat ever with you. When you really need him back, pull it out. Make him know you got the goods and plan to deliver. Lol
I want to reiterate again, it’s good to have a CB radio a good one. I have it set of headphones you can communicate to those around you that have a CB radio for security. You can't park that close to a road, especially a paved one and not to expect visitors. I have the luxury of having a 4x4 and purposely fine crappy roads to get back to. It will give me lead time for anyone driving up.
Watch out for coyotes out there. Makes me nervous watching him go out of site. Love the area you are in. Nice walk. Do you ever use Ebikes on your trails?
I like Foyles War good program. I WAS THINKING DRUG DEALERS? A BB pistol would just make some nut mad please be careful. You should have a hand gun but never tell anyone you have it. When I was a kid we lived in GLOBE AZ, my brother & I had a BB pistol & hand gun for target at cans & milk cartons. We would ride Honda trail 90 or Honda trail 70 both popular in 1970 and later I got a Yamaha 125 MX. Dirt bikes are so fun & much safer than street riding on pavement.
Yamaha MX!!! I remember staring at the sales brochure that I had back in '76 dreaming of one :) I talked my father in to a used '78 YZ125 from the dealer for $600. That was my start on bikes :)
Qwestion u don't carry a weapon like a gun just Qwestion, when I go out camping I take over and beyond just in case and when I walk my dogs I take protection for my dogs ?
Does Lefty still have his left and right? I had a male with his dodads still infact and found some traits totally unchangeable!!! Actually interested to know, nomad in Australia about to go adventuring again in 12 days. Whoo hoo.
Kids most likely smoking pot or taking drugs or drinking alcohol, and saw your lone van so were curious, but you surprised them, or scared them, good they left, I would trust them no further than I would trust a total stranger.
@@TomJourneysAdventures This is the one that Lefty has been wearing for 8 years (we're on the 3rd). I only ever replaced them because they were looking worn on the edges - they've never failed or broken and, believe me, he tests them for durability!!! amzn.to/3XzXWjm He wears the medium and they are widely adjustable for exact fit.
i got 3 border collies make them come back every few minutes when running free like that. i make them touch my hand then if they are close enough to touch my hand i can grab them
Plenty of good dog trainers & videos. "Heel" should take less than an hour to learn. Then just keep reinforcing it. The longer you wait, the harder training is. Go for "canine good citizen" certification if you can. When he leads you, that be exerting pack dominance, which can lead to all sorts of problems. He should only go run off if given permission to do so.
Ok your out in the middle of the desert and your using a .177 cal co2 for protection....... no way that’s not going to save your life especially against a person or persons all tweaked out on drugs. And as far as your dog goes barking helps you get ready for possible trouble and that’s it. I’ve been boondocking in the sticks for 40 years and have come across some real bad people. Please take care we all want you and your pup to be safe.
I'm disappointed that you left the walkie talkie wrapper behind. If you find trash that's not yours pick it up, help clean up after the other degenerates

I use to communicate with my dog by whistling. They have sensitive ears and even at some distance they hear it and react accordingly.
After I had braces several years ago, I can't whistle anymore!!!
A friend of Mine put a Tone Only Pager on his Dog’s Collar. At the sound of the Beeper, his Dog would immediately head homewards.
The ghost of carburetor carl and his buds
You can't park that close to a road, especially a paved one and not to expect visitors. I have the luxury of having a 4x4 and purposely fine crappy roads to get back to. It will give me lead time for anyone driving up.
I love Acorn TV!
Right!! I have Brit Box also :)
I would be worried about Rattlesnakes.
You should try and hide, and really quiet and see if he comes looking for you,lol
Qwestion u don't carry a weapon like a gun just Qwestion, when I go out camping I take over and beyond just in case and when I walk my dogs I take protection for my dogs ?
I'm working on adding that to our gear :)
Does Lefty still have his left and right? I had a male with his dodads still infact and found some traits totally unchangeable!!! Actually interested to know, nomad in Australia about to go adventuring again in 12 days. Whoo hoo.
No... the shelter grabs them from the dogs they keep for adoption :)))
Carrie dog treats ..Keep him interested ..When you call him give him a treat. That way when he run off he will come to you because he wants a treat
Sir your video is little washed out. What is your camera model.
I use 4 different camera models in my videos :)
@@TheCampulanceMani can see whole video washed out and you must be using single camera in this video I think.
Kids most likely smoking pot or taking drugs or drinking alcohol, and saw your lone van so were curious, but you surprised them, or scared them, good they left, I would trust them no further than I would trust a total stranger.
Hi sir, how to do you get internet to be watching TV up there?
I did a video a while back on my data use :)
That would freak me out. No good reason for them to set up up so close to you.
How did you get him to walk next to you? Journey pulls a lot of the time. Would be nice to have him walk like that.
That took me months when he first came home with me. He used to pull sooo hard. The harness he wears really helped too.
@The Campulance Man going to look in your store maybe a harness would help I just have him on a wide leather colar.
@@TomJourneysAdventures This is the one that Lefty has been wearing for 8 years (we're on the 3rd). I only ever replaced them because they were looking worn on the edges - they've never failed or broken and, believe me, he tests them for durability!!! amzn.to/3XzXWjm He wears the medium and they are widely adjustable for exact fit.
i got 3 border collies make them come back every few minutes when running free like that. i make them touch my hand then if they are close enough to touch my hand i can grab them
Place like that must be packed with snakes & scorpion
Aren't you afraid of rattle snakes. For Lefty you can buy a good 50 to 100 foot training lead from eBay very inexpensive. Much safer.
Certain season and locations, yes for sure. I keep him very close in those situations.
Get a flare pistol for emergencies, they are a legal safety device and great for self protection.
Also great for starting wildfires in the brush...
Rattlesnake Territory is not a good place for unleashed dogs.
Street racers setting getting ready to run until you scared them off perhaps?
Interesting, didn't think if that. It's a straight road...
and the answer to your question is "Yes! He's having a great time!" :)
If you were in the UK it would probably be likely that you'd camped in a dogging spot 😂
Please don't ever use a co2 bbgun on somebody. That's an invitation for them to use a real gun.
Do you ever get lost on your walks with Lefty? The landscape all looks the same & I could see getting turned around & losing my way back!!
I always carry my phone with my camp marked on the map. I also use the surroundings, mountains, etc to gauge where we are :)
Wow illegal waste dumping! I wonder why they could not go to an RV dump station?
I HAD ARMIDILLA UNDER MY CAR
Whoa thats awesome!!
That would scare me.
Green tip bananas are the best 🍌
Hello David. I sent you a email and paypal 2 days ago. I hope you got both.
I'm disappointed that you left the walkie talkie wrapper behind. If you find trash that's not yours pick it up, help clean up after the other degenerates
I have picked up more trash than I can comment on. I didn't want to carry that on our walk but I assure you that it was not there when we left... it was in my trash bag along with a bunch of other things I came across.
I know that road that's my favorite Road Lovell Canyon Road about 30 miles outside of Las Vegas. everyone is carrying guns in that area.
I did see a lot of holstered when I went in town there :)
do yawl ever encounter any snakes out there in the desert type surroundings?
No we haven't seen one yet and we do a lot of hiking.
Have you tried a clicker to teach him to stay by your side
No, I do make a click noise to change his direction though. Thats when he's on the long walking lead.
sounds like a drug deal in the middle of nowhere to me.
