All right! To all of you out there wondering if the prefix is truly a OtterBox case. I have contacted OtterBox customer support, and they have clarified and verified that the prefix series of cases sold by OtterBox on Amazon are truly OtterBox cases. OtterBox just doesn’t sell them on their website for the S 21 series. They do however sell the S 21 series Prefix cases on Amazon. Thank you for making this in-depth video. You've helped me decide between the clear (non-sparkly) Symmetry and the Commuter. I have leaned toward the Commuter.
I have the Defender on my S21-U. I like it just fine. It allows the phone to sit flat and level on a surface on its back, so you can use a bubble level APP, protects the camera very well. The one thing that it is lacking in is, on the front side, the left and right sides do not stick up very much above the surface of the screen, in fact, if you use a screen protector I think the surface would be even with the sides of the Defender. So, in the event of dropping the phone on its face, there is not really any edge protection for the screen. The top and bottom edges on the front stick up a lot higher. This case works great with the vertical stand Samsung Qi charger, even the Fast Wireless Charging option works good with it. 5G works fine too.
Hey man.. great review of the various Otterbox cases... have a quick question from a new subscriber.... Id heard that the magnetic closer cases interfer with the S21 Ultra's S Pen.. making it necessary to remove them from the cases if you use the S Pen.... I really want the benifit of the full folio case, the Strada, in particular, would be perfect.. however, it it means I cant use the S Pen, it makes it less useful... have you found any problems with magnetic closer cases interfering with S Pen functionality?.. Thanks for your very professional presentation :)
@Supergrover1969, it's my pleasure to help and thanks for watching. I can tell you for sure that I have not used the s pen while using the strada, but I can tell you that the strada is super amazing. And if the strata is still available on Amazon. Then I would try it if I was you, and if it doesn't work send that thing back. Try on anyway. What if the strata is so good that you decide it's worth not being able to use the s pen? You get what I mean?
Thinking about making a switch to the s22 ultra. I am an iphone user now, with a PC, are you a mixed user? Look like you have an apple watch at the least for apple products.
I do use both Android and iOS. What I have noticed is the iPhone is the one a I can’t do without. Mainly because it’s just so simple and consistent. Would I have both if I didn’t have this RUclips channel? Yes. I’ve had both since before the channel. Why? I love mobile tech, and I’m super indecisive on which to choose. I figured having both would be best for me. For you I recommend trying the S22 ultra exclusively for 10 days. Then switch back to the iPhone for a day, and see if you miss the Ultra. Write down what you like about the ultra and what you miss about the iPhone as you use the Ultra. You will need to decide to keep the S22 Ultra or not before the 14 day buyers remorse ends. After 14 days the phone is yours. Get a good screen protector and case for the Ultra during the trial period. If you damage the Ultra during this time. You will have to keep it. Hope this helps. Please ask any questions if needed.
@@SomethingMobile Wow - thank you for this response!! Just subbed because of that. I will certainly do that, puts a little less pressure on my knowing that I have that window, too :)
I've been using the symmetry for a little over 6 months and it's been pretty good. Dropped my phone a few dozen times from chest level by accident and it's not broken yet lol. My only concern is if it landed on an edge or corner of something into the screen, the sides of the case don't completely rise above the screen, though the top and bottom do. Stupid curved screens.
@ZTenski, a screen protector could help with that, but I think the object it strikes could also hit the center of the screen as well. You get what I mean? What you are saying is... The protrusion on the ground could break your unprotected curved edge of the front glass. Right? I think that same object/ protrusion on the ground could also break the center of the glass. If your phone fell face down. I'm bringing this to your attention so maybe you won't worry too much about the curved glass breaking. Accidents happen. Just keep enjoying your phone. otterbox is a really strong protective case, but only buy that case if your 3 previous phone all broke because u drop it a lot, otherwise maybe go UAG civilian case, it looks good it's strong and nice feel to the hand
Thank you. Purchased the sparkly symmetry case for my Ultra after watching. Cost £13 via Amazon so no complaints on price. It replaces a Caseology Nano Pop (it causes my screen protector to lift). 🙂
What's your opinion...a case that's rigid offers the best protection as it stops the phone from twisting it's screen therefore stopping cracking on impact?
My preference is a protective somewhat slimmer profile case that offers really good drop protection and possibly has some sort of kickstand. If I can't have a kickstand then adding one to it would be nice if it was an option. Screen protector friendly and for me price really isn't an option as long as it's not over $70. Hope this helps man.
The Commuter has the same level of protection than the Defender, without the grippiness of the outside rubber that will stick in your pocket. I like the hard plastic goes outside. Put a film protector over the screen and this is the winning combination for best protection and confort. If it goes inside your pocket.

Hi, is there a screen protector on your phone for this cases overview? If so, what brand and type of screen protector did you use? Just wanting to find a screen protector that fits the commuter case.
Hello @Lauren Christians, the Prefix is so sweet. So I want to say go with the Prefix, but it is less drop protective than the Symmetry. For example, the Symmetry box says 3x drop tested. The Prefix just says “Drop Tested.” I’m assuming that means the Prefix isn’t as protective. Just the feel of the two cases in the hand. Let’s me know that the Symmetry wins in drop protection. For “me” though…I would go with the Prefix. 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to ask a question. 🙏
@@SomethingMobile alright thank you! I ordered the clear prefix one with the black bumper around it hoping it wouldn't yellow or wouldnt look as bad if it did start to yellow
I am debating between the defender and the commuter, as I'm looking for really good protection and not too bulky of a case whilst being able to use a screen protector, Any ideas/tips?
@GRoz9, yes. The new version of Whitestone dome glass screen protectors seems to fit a little better with the defender or defender pro case by OtterBox. The Commuter fits with any screen protector. You will be totally fine with that one. You can find the commuter here. amzn.to/3mPBou6 If you scroll down you will see a used one for $29. Here’s a link to the Defender amzn.to/3vcPYQs If you click on used ones for this. Scroll down the $37 “like new” one. If these aren’t satisfactory for you. You can return them. The idea here is I think you should get both to see what you think. The used prices of these combined and little more than what it would cost to get one new Defender Pro case by OtterBox. I hope this helps. By the way those are affiliate links. Please don’t feel obligated to use those. They are just there for your convenience. I do get a commission of you use those. No extra cast to you, but just want to let you know. Take care.
I'm interested in that prefix case. Would you say it's like an otterbox version of spigen's thin fit but better? I don't see affiliate link for that one though
I'll update the links. Tha k you for the heads up. I have the thin fit. I feel like they are pretty different. Spigen Thin Fit has more of a soft touch. It has a little more table protection around the camera. It seems like they might both offer that same drop protection. In that way they are the same. They feel different to hold too. The Prefix feels more squared off? Around the sides. They feel different in the pocket as well. The Spigen is less noticable in the pocket. It sounds like I would choose the thin fit over the Prefix. I think I would choose the Prefix. It reminds me of a UAG case. I really like UAG. Hope this helps @Jose Calderon. Thanks for taking the time to inquire. 🙂🙏🙏
Otterbox Defender was my favorite case. I've used the Defender for years on all my phones. They dropped the ball getting rid of the 3rd layer of protection, which was the built in screen protector and a super raised frame. If it's not broke, don't try to fix it. It's ridiculous.
Hello @Dylan Gajdosik, Can you please let me know what case you went with instead of the Defender ? Also, It would be nice if OtterBox offered both options. Maybe the curved glass prevents the plastic screen protector. Or maybe the sonic fingerprint sensor read would be affected. There must be a reason. Or more people buy cases now that the built in is gone? If the later is true. Not likely that it is. Maybe OtterBox will bring the built in screen protector back if they see the need for it. I hope for others like you that we can someday get both screen-less and built-it options. 🙏🙏 Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. 🙂
@@SomethingMobile and....I know the built in can be done because there are a couple companies out there doing it. Of course, I wasn't aware of that at the time. I wound have tried one of the other cases instead. Lifeproof is another one that has gone to crap but still charge the same ridiculous amount of money.
Okay, yeah so sorry you lost a great brand. Something you really liked. I'm hoping you will get what you want some day. I'll keep an eye out for a good option for you. I do know that Ghostek sells the Naughtical. That is a pretty big case though. I reviewed one for the Note 10 plus. It was pretty nice.
The love the Commuter line but I'm currently irritated with OB at the moment. I've so far had 2 (soon to be 3) cases since April of last year where the rubber portion on top right gets loose so now my volume buttons are not usable for the S21 Ultra. Didn't have this issue for the previous Galaxy S phones ive had. I
Great review. 👍. Does otterbox make a case wear you can attach the s pen to it. Next time you should show the phone in the back pocket. A lot of people carry there phone's that way too.
Thank you! @Jerome Gold I wish they did. From what I could see. I couldn't find one that holds an S-Pen. Seems like they would benefit from making one though. Yes, sir. That is a good idea. Thank you Jerome. 🙂🙏
I have the strada also, for the s20 and the galaxy s9. It's a nice quality case that has quickly become my top go to model. The only thing I do not like about it is the level of difficulty pressing the buttons. They are tactile yes, but they are very hard to press and that in itself kills the satisfaction. It's an issue on both my strada cases, it's still acceptable on the S9, but it somehow got extremely worse on the S20, I'm really hoping to find a fix if there is one. Seriously, the buttons are like hard plastic, ridiculously hard to push. Wtf otterbox. I like this case so much and it forces me to feel divided on keeping it or not just because of how annoying and frustrating the buttons are.
I’m trying to picture it. Without having used a glass camera protector. I can’t say for sure, but It seems to me that the glass might be flush with the back of the case or just be outside the protection of the case. Maybe try a DBrand skin.
@@SomethingMobile Okay, I just installed a glass camera protector, the Symmetry & Commuter cases still work but the camera cutouts of the cases do overlap the protector on the back. Defender & Prefix are better with their wide open camera cutouts.
This is a possible video I can make. For now though. Take a look at the NTG case on Amazon. It looks like the commuter and is $15. It's a pho OtterBox, but nice none the less.
I miss the days when phones dont feel like a brick in your pocket. I always buy rugged cases for good protection and could never comfortably put my phone in my jean pockets, always have to hold my phone everywhere I go.
@@T.N.24 for sure. There really is. Unless you take a look at a Mous case. Take a look at the cool tech they use to allow for slim drop protection. Might be perfect for you.
Problem with ALL cases is the 20-25% NOT protected where the camera area is! NEVER in the last 8 cases (ALL Otterbox Defenders) have I scratched or damaged a phone until now! Bought this last week...
On otterbox homepage the strada serie is not real leather. Im confused. They also have a leather folio series that looks like your strada case...but the strada they have on their homepage is different from the product you have. I want the one you have.
Hey thanks for the heads up. They did a really good job making the strata seem like it’s real leather. It even smells pretty good. I got my case from Amazon when I made this video. Hopefully they are still available there. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience. Yeah I didn’t consider that case mainly because the pop socket doesn’t come out far enough to support the phone like a kickstand.
At log home, actually from my experience it’s the opposite. I’ve noticed that the regular defender fits better with white stone then the pro defender. In this video however it seems that this blue and green defender case didn’t want to fit with AmFilm. From past experience AmFilm fits better with the defender than white stone. So what does this mean? You’re basically at the mercy of the way you placed your screen protector. The best thing to do is to put the case on and do a drive fit with the screen protector. To see where it needs to lay in order to work with that case. Before you use the UV light make any minute adjustments that are needed. To make the screen protector work with the case are using.
@Log Home, I was wondering the same thing. I'm thinking it made more sense to do that considering the two mics are there so close to eachother? I should ask them. I'm wondering if I would get an answer to that. Thank you for takimg the time to ask Log Home. 🙂👍
Hello I have both the prefix and the commuter case. Could we please know where you got the prefix series? I got mine from Amazon and it came without the retail packaging. I contacted otterbox to ask them about the case since it was not listed on the website and the packaging I recieved from Amazon was not the original packaging. I was told by the otterbox rep that a prefix series case was never made for the S21 lineup and that the case I recieved had to be a counterfeit so now I am really confused. I want to like this case.
This is the first time I've heard of this. I looked at the OtterBox website, and there is not a Prefix available. You might be correct on the fact that this Prefix on this video, and the Prefix you have may not be an OtterBox original case.
I do want to add. You can return the case. I'm going to return mine. Feels like the right thing to do. They are using the OtterBox name to profit. Feels kinda bad.
@@SomethingMobile I was surprised to see that yours actually came with packaging but I've read that some counterfeits have very convincing packaging and build quality. Please let me know anything you find out, it would be helpful and much appreciated!
I’m not sure what you mean by protecting the lenses. The ones you do want to buy would be the OtterBox defender or maybe the symmetry. But as far as protecting the lenses. I would say that is a matter of opinion. You can mean do any of these cases cover the lenses in that case no. But when you lay the phone down on a flat surface a few of these cases will offer you protection in the way of lifting your camera lens is off of the flat surface the phone is on. You may want to look at some protection from Whitestone Dome. If you are looking to protect the lenses by covering them. The problem with covering the lens is you are then applying a piece of glass and adhesive that is not as clear as the glass that’s on the lens from the manufacture. There is a case made by Lew it’s called a Lew Later case. Look up latercase.com and take a look at the case they have for the S 21 Ultra. It offers pretty good protection for lay table scenarios.
Why cant i wear my otterboxe clip on the right side of my hip? Its only for left side. Only way to wear on right side is to have your phone backwards and you have to flip your phone around every time to answer it. Unless you holster it screen side out. Wich would defeat the point of otterbox. What am i missing here. Samsung s21 ultra Try it..... you too will say wtf
I agree with you. I wish they would have just kept it the same way they did the note 20 ultra. They should just leave the little clip right in the center of the phone. I know that the clip is a little bit too close to the power button, but it still is functional. Hopefully OtterBox will make that adjustment next time around. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and leave a comment.
Sweet! Do microbs really consume the first layer of microbs then learn through the DNA of the dead microbs how to combat the antimicrobrial surface they land on. If so this would mean the anti microb layer the case manufacturers use would only work on the first few microbs introduced to the surface. Right? Please try to clarify this. Thank you so much for any help you can provide.
@@SomethingMobile Thanks 👍 it's gonna be screen protector glass or film friendly? Side lips not gonna be a touch a screen in make a trouble to daily use?
@@huberttarganski2095 the side of the glass seems okay, but the top or bottom could touch. My solution for myself is removing a little plastic from the underside of the case top frame. The area touching the glass will cause the screen protector to lift if a little plastic isn't removed. But the area needed to be removed won't be evident until after you install the case with the screen protector installed. I hope this helps.

Take care.
@@SomethingMobile Thank you a lot for the help.
:)
@@SomethingMobile well, I went with the Defender because I wasn't aware about it until I received it. I was pretty disappointed to say the least.
@@SomethingMobile thanks buddy, please do. I'd appreciate it.
I
Have you been taking advantage of the return policy that OtterBox has? Also thank you for taking the time to leave this comment. Super helpful.
Thanks just ordered my phone now need a case great video
Congrats on your new phone. I love mine. I'm glad I could help.
Any otterbox cases with spots for the samsung S21 Ultra 5G S Pen?
I have yet to see one.
Good info on the micro part
Thank you 🙂
I have the strada also, for the s20 and the galaxy s9.
I feel your pain. So close to perfect…
Ended up getting the otterbox defender, it's probably going to be my new goto case.
Mike, will the black Symmetry for the S21 Ultra work if you have a glass camera protector on the back?
I’m trying to picture it. Without having used a glass camera protector. I can’t say for sure, but It seems to me that the glass might be flush with the back of the case or just be outside the protection of the case. Maybe try a DBrand skin.
@@SomethingMobile Okay, I just installed a glass camera protector, the Symmetry & Commuter cases still work but the camera cutouts of the cases do overlap the protector on the back. Defender & Prefix are better with their wide open camera cutouts.
@@loghome7061 yea wish I would have seen this comment 2 months ago lol would have let ya know glass camera protectors don't work with the symmetry on.
Think when I can I'm also gonna get the commuter looked like one I'd like please do a updated video on the cases you liked to use most for you phone
I totally feel you on this. The OtterBox Prefix is pretty slim though. It might be the case for you. Let me know if you try it.
@@SomethingMobile It's slim but not enuff protection for me. There's always a trade off.
Thank you for the update. Can you say how this happened? Would love to know what to avoid if possible.
My otterbox s21 ultra casing plus pop has bloated sides. Im disappointed :(
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience. Yeah I didn’t consider that case mainly because the pop socket doesn’t come out far enough to support the phone like a kickstand.
So the regular Defender is not Whitestone Dome glass friendly while the Defender Pro is?
Gracias! Desde El Salvador, América Latina.
@Emerson Ventura, De nada Amigo!
I got whitestone dome on my s21 ultra works fine
Same here mine works great too. Funny you say this. I’m working on a video about this very topic.
@@SomethingMobile Yeah finally. People think its not compatible, it is.
I didn't see an S pen port on the clear sparkly case
There is one there. Sorry bout that.
@@SomethingMobile I think I'm going to go for it!
I wanted the commuter but I think I'm going with defender or the pro
Great choice. Love the Defender.
Why did they make that ugly pill shape cutout on the top of the symmetry case?
@Log Home, I was wondering the same thing. I'm thinking it made more sense to do that considering the two mics are there so close to eachother? I should ask them. I'm wondering if I would get an answer to that. Thank you for takimg the time to ask Log Home. 🙂👍
I am sory, how can i buy it...
I've never had a problem with my otterbox case and the screen protector
I'm going to look into this.
I do want to add. You can return the case. I'm going to return mine. Feels like the right thing to do. They are using the OtterBox name to profit. Feels kinda bad.
Sorry I keep going on about this. I have to say. THANK YOU so much for bring this to light.
@@SomethingMobile I was surprised to see that yours actually came with packaging but I've read that some counterfeits have very convincing packaging and build quality. Please let me know anything you find out, it would be helpful and much appreciated!
I take a LOT of photos. Protecting the lenses is of VITAL importance. Do any cases offer protection of the lenses? Thanks.
It offers pretty good protection for lay table scenarios.
the big put off of this video is that stray high pitched beep
@Hibanana, I’ll work on that sound issue. Thank you for the heads up. Please come back to let me know if my next video makes this same noise.
I like the defender case
@The Godfather, I do as well. 🙂
Why cant i wear my otterboxe clip on the right side of my hip? Its only for left side.
Only way to wear on right side is to have your phone backwards and you have to flip your phone around every time to answer it. Unless you holster it screen side out. Wich would defeat the point of otterbox.
What am i missing here.
Samsung s21 ultra
Try it..... you too will say wtf
I work in microbiology though lol antimicrobial may be a good idea
Damn I really liked the strada but unavailable at the moment
It's worth the wait. I really like that case too.
Hi. Which one of them has a biggest lips on a front I'm thinking about sides.
I'd say the Defender or Defender Pro
@@SomethingMobile Thanks 👍 it's gonna be screen protector glass or film friendly? Side lips not gonna be a touch a screen in make a trouble to daily use?
@@huberttarganski2095 the side of the glass seems okay, but the top or bottom could touch. My solution for myself is removing a little plastic from the underside of the case top frame. The area touching the glass will cause the screen protector to lift if a little plastic isn't removed. But the area needed to be removed won't be evident until after you install the case with the screen protector installed. I hope this helps.
Great video
@Ayoka Davis, thank you. 🙏🙏
Why are you staring at the computer, it's not regular
Agreed. Thanks for the heads up. That's something I'll work on in my future videos. The reason I was looking was mainly to see if I was in frame. Either way. I'll work on getting better at this RUclips thing. Thanks for the constructive criticism.
I just wanted to see you put on the symmetry case and you completely skipped it.
Yeah, I’ll have to consider that next time.
Commuter
Super nice case.
I say they all looked the same as them jeans were to much of a slim fit
It’s really more of how the case feels in the pocket against the leg. For me that’s what really matters. But I don’t do these videos for me. So I think I need to try different pockets for you all. Okay, I’ll see what I can do. Thank you @Kyle Wilson for taking the time to leave a comment.
@@SomethingMobile they were good I just thought they stuck out a bit more than I expected
Thank you for the video I got the defender case definitely made my choice watching this video alot I only had it for about a week but definitely love my defender case
I like it
I want to buy for my s21 ultra
