Just a tip, if you plan to do this, place the ballast upside down to begin with, so you can reach all sides. Usually on older vessels the ballast stands just fine

Yes, that is a good idea.....but easier said than done! One person wrestling around a 3,500lb piece of cast iron is not an easy task! Besides, if I stood the ballast upright, with the keel portion to the ground, then I am working on a vertical face. By leaving the ballast on its side, I could pound away and grind away letting gravity help me do my work.
