how would you write out the notation of a between subjects design with only one independent variable?!

Depends what you mean by notation. Shadish et al. have a method of representing designs where a posttest only experimental design would be symbolized by R Xa O
R Xb O
Omit Xb if that condition is a control group. If you mean to say, the intervention has only one group, then it is a one group posttest only design. There's no assignment to condition. There's no independent VARIABLE because it is constant.
