  • I stumble into a school of slot drum while exploring the back bays behind Masonboro Island. I use jigs, topwater and even an unused Mirror Lure to hook into some hungry red drum.

    Heck of a day right there! Found an absolute pile and when the reds are stacked up like that you can do what you want with that MR 17! Lol. You get good with that lure and you'll be busting the specks up. Nice spot to launch, too.
    And the perfect Raleigh-ite...you go home! Haha. Just kidding! Nice work, sir. That was fun to watch!

    Gonna have to try fishing out behind masonboro I usually take the yak out of trails end or CB

    • @SteveOllice
      @SteveOllice  2 года назад

      Put in's between CB and Trail's End are mostly private, as far as I know. From a skiff, covering all that water in between would be easier. Where I was is a nice paddle from Trail's end, but I would be casting the whole way. Could take a while...

      @@ericwilliamsfishing That's a private marina. Maybe we could get together some time. I've been wanting to kayak at Masonboro inlet, but not by myself.

    hey steve, we are heading out of Trails End and plan on trying to catch a few drums tomorrow. Can you recommend any lure setups for this time of the year?

    • @SteveOllice
      @SteveOllice  Год назад

      Any topwater that you can walk the dog. If they are short hitting, downsize the bait. Use 1/4 oz jigs with zman paddle tails. White is always good, but try any color. The key is to find the fish and try not to spook them. As you can see in the vid, if you keep quite, they will stick around after being spooked. Good luck and let me know how you did!

    • @kbizass
      @kbizass Год назад

      @@SteveOllice Appreciate all that information! We have some carolina rigs, mullet, zman plastics and Rapala top water. Will def try to find them. Do you have any specific spot in mind that we should try? We are hitting it at 7am tomorrow, then again at 1pm.

    • @SteveOllice
      @SteveOllice  Год назад

      @@kbizass try around points and oyster beds. Watch for bait and look for birds diving. I've heard that a falling tide is best, so let me know if 1pm was better than in the morning. I'll be on the water tomorrow morning too, but further north. Thinking of hitting Masonboro Sunday morning.

      @@SteveOllice So we caught about 20 fish Saturday. The most significant was 2 Black Drum around 3-3.5lbs. Didn’t catch a single red, and caught those on cut mullet. We did catch a bunch of random fish on the zman paddle tail. How’d your day go?

    • @SteveOllice
      @SteveOllice  11 месяцев назад

      @@kbizass I went behind Masonboro on Sunday after a buddy told me not to bother. Got skunked. But I was stubborn and just wanted to fish topwater. However, I went north on on his advise and scored a nice 26 incher that busted my topwater right next to the boat. Going to make a nice video.

      I forget the actual day but it was during flounder season 2021, so that makes it some time during the first two weeks of September. I’ve been chasing this day ever since! I’ve learned that it’s all about finding a school. Not easy. There is a lot of water to cover.

    Could my 1448 aluminum jon boat handle these waters on your typical day?

    • @SteveOllice
      @SteveOllice  Год назад

      In deeper sections, your jon boat would be fine. If you pull the engine up and pole around, you get into some skinny water. Just watch your tides and know the general layout of the creeks and marshes.. Google maps on your phone can really help. I like to plan my day by looking on Maps and dropping points on spots I think will be good.
