My brother never passed driving and he's quite a nervous soul. Me with anxiety was quite worried thinking "if my big brother couldn't do it I certainly can't" and consequently I cried religiously in my driving lessons and had countless panic attacks. BUT, after some serious chats about taking propanolol with my doctor I sailed through both the theory and practical last year. I got myself a car and gradually weaned myself off the beta-blockers for driving. I've now been driving fully licensed for 6 months. You really can do it, Lucy

Congratulations on your success with driving! This comment has really inspired me too, thank you for that! I’ve been avoiding learning due to anxiety as well, but it’s inevitable I need to learn. I guess it’s time. 💕

When learning to drive I was so terrified, but I live in a place where everything is very spaced out so learning to drive is pretty much necessary. I am completely fine with driving now, honestly I was really scared until about a month of having my license and then I suddenly realized the fear was just gone. My fear came from me inherently not trusting myself or believing myself capable of handling important tasks. Of course it’s good to have a healthy amount of fear for caution, but once you learn to trust yourself the fear will go away and driving will just be muscle memory. Good luck!

I always appreciate when people share about anxieties involving driving, for lots of different reasons, but I feel especially comforted because I'm moving to the UK this year, and am a bit nervous about getting used to driving there. I'm also planning to get a manual car because I'm so tired of feeling like I'll never be able to drive one comfortably, so hearing that someone else wants to learn to drive who's from the UK and is feeling anxious, makes me feel less alone and worried about it! So thank you!

I have huge travel anxiety with pretty much all methods of transport, to the point I just don’t go anywhere if it’s over an hour’s journey, but since learning to drive it’s lessened quite significantly. I’m a nervous driver (and was a super nervy learner, hello year+ of lessons and three tests) but knowing the I am in control of the vehicle, the speed, the route and can stop at any time is so much better for me than being a passenger. I managed some longer drives last year for the first time and I’m feeling positive about trying to go more places this year. You can do it, Lucy!

Learning to drive definitely helped my anxiety. I hated the thought of being in a car, behind the wheel and in control of the situation. Passed first time with a really supportive instructor who pushed me to try after 20 lessons (2hrs each).

I learnt to drive in 2019 and it's the BEST most freeing thing I've ever done but I suppose when you're in London and you don't feel trapped it's very different. But I never thought I'd love driving and it's my favourite thing when I'm in the car on my own listening to podcasts and music 💕 it can be scary but 1) spend time finding the right instructor who makes you feel comfortable 2) take it at your own pace but try to keep it consistent and not take months off and 3) book your theory asap because it makes road driving much more rational

I learned to drive in 6th form , traumatically put myself through lessons & somehow passed my test even though it was awful & then didn’t drive for 3 years out of fear. Now I can do small messages around my home town & drive to the beach with my friends! Take it in baby steps it has really helped me get better at it without freaking myself out

I put off learning to drive for so long! But I passed in November after a year of lessons, and I actually really started to look forward to those lessons as 1/2 hours of nothing but concentration on a task and some idle gossip with my instructor.
My advice is to look for a female instructor, someone who gets your anxiety towards driving and someone who isn't going to rush you to pass. Then you'll actually enjoy rather than dread lessons!

I was so scared to start driving, but the sense of achievement I feel now a year or so after getting my licence was so worth it. Setting my mind to getting it done and having driving lessons quite close together ie once a fortnight or once a week was definitely worthwhile.

Also, really appreciated watching your video today during my lunch break, as I just finished a few chores and I'm working on two uni papers that are due next week, lots of assignments and readings for the first week, but I feel accomplished and your video helped me feel more of that.

On the contraceptive front, I was on the pill for 5 years but had to come off of it in November for medical reasons. I hadn’t been without it for so long that I was incredibly upset when I had to stop but my nurse was amazing in talking through my options. In the end I went with the implant, but I’d read so many horrible reviews I was convinced I’d have it out by Christmas. It’s honestly the best thing that’s ever happened to me! My skin stayed clear, I stopped having periods where I was depressed and it just made me feel so much better. I’m not saying it’s for you, but it‘s definitely for me and I’m glad I kept my options open. Find a nurse, have a chat, and I hope you find what you’re looking for ❤️

I absolutely HATED driving lessons and I would cry after many of them as it would stress me out so much! I never thought I was going to be able to pass it. However I got it first time and now it's second nature to me, makes me wonder why I got so wound up. Totally get how anxious it can make you feel, but the feeling after passing it and getting it over with makes it worth it!

I also struggle with anxiety around travel and was super nervous when learning to drive and even for a while after I passed. But now it is so helpful for my travel anxiety because I am in control of my travel! I am the one driving, I'm not relying on someone else's schedule, which was where some of my anxiety came from in the first place. So while learning to drive can be scary, it might actually make travel less anxiety inducing in the future for you. You can do it!

a lil encouragement for driving - i started learning at 17, i passed last year at age 23 and i absolutely shouldn't have driven when i first learnt cos my anxiety was just WAY too much. I'm still learning to drive with my anxiety but im much better equip now then i was previously. Im actually starting to enjoy driving but be patience - you'll get there in time, people are way more aware then you think and if youre not up for driving in that particular moment it'll be okay. Also if you're north london based i have a great life drawing class to recommend - £6 a sesh and its bloody golden

I completely understand the driving fear! Even the hereditary bit- one of my older family members drove, but was so anxious about it that she would actively avoid making left turns. I'm 20 now and have only had my license for just over two years (in the US, people can get their permits starting on their 16th birthday). I hated the idea of being in control of a moving vehicle, and I was terrified I would crash. Surprisingly, though, learning to drive actually made me feel more calm in cars, once I got over the initial *omg I'm driving* fear. Knowing that I'm in control of where I'm going gave me a really cool sense of independence, which I think you would like! Plus I took lessons with an instructor, rather than family or friends, so that made me feel safe. And even if it takes a while for you to take main roads or any highway-type things, at least you can do it! I didn't start highways until about six months ago. Anyway, all of this is to say that, from one driving-fearer to another, you got this!!

I was terrified of doing my drivers license, mainly because I was scared that I would fuck up and make mistakes and ppl would think I'm an idiot. Normally ppl in Austria start with 17/18, but I just couldn't do it. I was kinda forced talked into doing it by my family (because even though I was terrified of driving, I also can't stand to disappoint ppl) and now I'm so fucking happy I have it. I've moved to China 3 years ago and I actually miss driving so much.

Not telling you what to do and of course the experience Hannah had with her coil and her colitis might have frightened you. But if you’re really not looking to have babies within the next 5 years I would suggest having a IUD/S because all other pills for me, personally, have the worst side effects with coming off of it, specifically on my mood, and these have been linked to more oestrogen in the body. And it takes the pressure off of you to remember to take a pill every day, you can get pregnant as soon as you have it removed and it’s the method that just gets along best with me personally. This is completely your choice but I think it might be something to consider. Lots of love xxx
