  • An easier key to play this tune in and having the lower notes on this Bowed Psaltery certainly helps. This is the key Pete Shutler played this tune in on his Bowed Psaltery with his group the Yetties. He played it ABAB and I'm playing it both parts twice through AABB. I also play this tune with two bows in "E" at .... • "KING OF THE FAIRIES" ...

    I've been watching these videos for years. Today, a local pawn shop had a Master Works psaltery for sale, with bag, bow, rosin, tuninh wrench and extra strings...for $40. I snapped it up. The tag said it was a "harp," they had no idea what they had. It's not in perfect tune, and the bow has a loose hair, but for the price, I would have been a fool to pass it up. Especially considering the instrument itself appears to be in flawless condition.
    Now, my psaltery hobby begins. :)

      More recently my Bowed Psaltery and I have been musically visiting Latvia, truly an amazing country with wonderful music to share. Before that traditional tunes from Breton, Scandinavia, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, and before that a lot of hymns, and few popular hits from my baby boomer youth. Please check out more of my RUclips videos and tell all your friends!

      Thank you for your encouraging comment Jerrel D, but there's hardly- any dexterity involved - the Bowed Psaltery is highly wrist er us!

    My grandparents have one of these and I'm set to inherit it! (I'm 90% sure I'm the only one who wants it anyway) I hope to someday be able to make it sound good! (When I have it of course)

    I think this is actually D Dorian (a mode of key of C) since all the notes are on the right side

      I thought it was in Dorian or Aeolian mode but couldn't squeeze that into the title.

    How do you descend the scale so quickly like you do at 1:00? That looks incredible

    • @GreggESchneeman
      @GreggESchneeman  6 лет назад +6

      The rail pins on a Bowed Psaltery are adjusted with the lowest longest note zither pin's height the lowest, next pin a little higher, next a little taller, and so on. Same on the black key side but there's less pins. All done right and strung up, look across the side and you will see the strings create a little valley effect with each string visible over the last string. the bow can get a note started and then slide at a tangent across as much as a full octave down scale, though not as easy up scale.

    Cool, is it ever played with the offhand as a mute? To prevent all that unending resonance?

    • @GreggESchneeman
      @GreggESchneeman  8 месяцев назад

      Besides the string you just played all the other strings on the Bowed Psaltery are resonating sympathetically. Its really beautiful and I can hear this better than someone hearing it through the microphone that came with my camera and RUclips can bring it to you. The usual way to mute is to bring the fore arm holding the bow down across all the strings, muting individual strings like a German Hackbret (Hammer Dulcimer) player does would be trickier with the strings as close together as they are. I have seen people weave their choice of string through all their strings which is then pushed up close to the nut bridge to modify their BP's sound. A wood nut bridge changes the tone considerably depending on what kind of wood and shape. Brass and steel rod capped nut bridges produce more resonance differently then the silver rod I use. My close up videos, although hopefully entertaining, are intended for encouraging new Bowed Psaltery players to expand their repertoire. Stand further back and bring in a drummer and some other musical instruments and that "unending resonance" is less noticeable.

    I love bowed psaltery and this guy/girl is good but for some reason, their playing style or that particular instrument hurts my teeth like hell.
