    I bought this album in 1991. Listened to it once or twice and it went to the back of my collection. In the summer of 2023, I pulled this album out and ever since, I can't stop listening to it. In the Evening: It’s hard to understand all the lyrics because Robert’s vocals are drowned out by the production. JPJ’s new “toy” was a Yamaha GX-1 (the famous Dream Machine). It cost around $50,000. Due to the cost, at that time only JPJ had one, Stevie Wonder had one, and Benny Andersson of ABBA had one. They recorded at Polar Studios (owned by ABBA) in Stockholm, Sweden. It didn’t have the reverb that Jimmy liked to use, and though the sound is good, it doesn’t have the group’s characteristic color.

    The record cover was done in seven varients. It's the same scene taken in the bar from the perspective of each different patron.
    You didn't know which variant you were going to get because the album was sold in a brown paper bag.
    This was a response to when somebody said to Jimmy something along the lines of "people only buy your records because it says Led Zeppelin on the cover"
    Also, when the album cover got wet it would turn color. Hence that swipe in the thumbnail.

    The Cars in 1978 came out with a syth pop album that was wildly popular and Zep changed up a lot with this album because of the later era of the 70s had went in that direction and it was the newer sound ... John Paul Jones took over the role of leader during the recording of the record because nobody else was that invested in the band anymore.
    Plant recently lost his young son to illness (I'll let you guess whether or not Jimmy went to the funeral).
    Page and Bonzo meanwhile were heavily into smack.
    The band was on the way out the door so to speak. Definitely a dark time for the band.
    But damn did Jonesy kill it on the keys on this record. Even Jimmy is terrific. Obviously Bonzo is perfect as always. As for Plant, just wait for All Of My Love. Wow.

    This album was recorded at the end of 1978, not the 80s yet! The end of a decade is always transitional, it's not surprising, but they were evolving & taking music into the next decade, not really following anyone. They never really followed anyone except the old Blues musicians they were so inspired by. I love this entire album. Have played it from beginning to end many times since the 80s. I'll follow your reactions through the album and hope you enjoy it.

    This song is pretty cool live. Sadly at this time things weren’t going that great, Bonham drinking so much & into heroine, & Page was really into it deep. This album is more Plant & JPJ, Plant & JPJ were recording during the day, & Bonham & Page were recording at night. Page & Bonham wanted more rock, while Plant & JPJ wanted a different direction. I’ll admit, it’s not an album I heavily listened to, thanks for your reaction. You will find this album features JPJ more musically, Page is more in the background, Bonham is still heard more in some then others.

  • @HollisDuty60
    @HollisDuty60 2 месяца назад +4

    This album is really all about JPJ and Robert writing most of the songs and stepping in to do what needed to be done. Jimmy was well into his addition as was Bonzo. Rehearsals and recording were often done by JPJ and Robert during the day, and Jimmy and Bonzo at night. This was a difficult time for the band. Within a year Robert’s son passed away, he also got tonsillitis and they had to postpone the U.S. Tour. The communication wasn’t good. There is more synthesizer because JPJ got a new instrument and wanted to use it. The album actually soared to #1, and has been certified 6 times Platinum. The critics panned it.
    The cover art was done to show the view through a window into a bar. It looks like somebody wiped the window to see in better. There are actually 6 different scenes of the same bar. Jimmy remembered a sleazy bar in New Orleans called the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street. The man at the bar is burning a Dear John letter. As he does so he is watched by six people. The barkeep, a young blond woman next to the bar, a strong-looking man standing nearby, a laughing African American woman also by the bar, the pianist, and a dark-haired woman standing next to the jukebox. The sleeve came in six versions, each one from the point of view of each person. The album was actually concealed in a brown paper bag so buyers wouldn’t know which one they bought. The inner sleeve features a black and white close-up of the ashtray in which the brokenhearted man has incinerated his letter.

  • @henriettaskolnick4445
    @henriettaskolnick4445 2 месяца назад +8

    This album is fraught with devastation; Robert's 5-year-old son passed away from a viral stomach infection. Robert was seriously (and understandably) lost as to what was the meaning of life and where did he fit and what did he want. Both Jimmy and Bonzo were not doing will with their respective addictions, but they both tried to help Robert refocus and come back to work; sadly, more destruction was to come. I love this song. It sounds hard and slightly otherworldly. The opening drone was created by Jimmy using a device called a Gizmotron effect that was created by two guys from the group 10cc. The hard crashes was Jimmy raking the tremolo bar down hard across the guitar strings. They were actually ahead of their time musically in creating guitar and synth tones that foreshadow 80s techno-rock. The lyrics reference some of the pain and grief people go through in their lives regardless of the amount of fame or money they have. Some history of the artwork; Hipgnosis again created this. The title of the album refers to the band going through some doubts and change within themselves, as well as the times in general; likening the difficult effort to trying to go "in" through the "out" door. There were 6 different album covers, taken from different angles and the album itself was wrapped in a brown paper bag, so you wouldn't know which view you'd bought until you unwrapped it. If you have one of these albums, the variations are indicated by a different letter A-F. It was Jimmy's idea to use the brown paper bags; besides it being an excellent marketing ploy, he said, (paraphrasing) that by this point in time, being a Zep fan was "uncool" so people could carry the album around like a forbidden thing. In addition to the different covers, the interior gatefold had images from the bar (like an ashtray, loose coins, etc.) printed with "paint-with-water" dots, so if you did wet them, they'd transform into sepia-toned "paint" to decorate the pictures.

Do you, did you ever have one conversation with Jimmy, Robert JPJ, Bonham? how TH do you know the meaning of their album cover 'name' and or why they used a brown paper bag for it's cover. Nothing you stated is remotely facts. Also, "things that never happened" it NOT being cool to be a Zeppelin fan (like Page would ever say that or that had anything to do with it). They were selling out every concert, still record breaking sales for Knebworth 3 nights with record attendance and their 1980 concerts selling out all over the world. My god, what a pile of nonsense you spew out. In their tribute 2007 concert, more than 20 million ticket requests in like 2 frickin hours...setting all time records. GO AWAY!

    This is going to be a very different album for you. It shows how diverse they were. Jimmy Page and John Bonham were dealing with their addictions. So this was mainly a JPJ and Robert Plant album. There is synth work by JPJ on this. "All My Love" is my favorite song on this album. Written for RP's young son who died. Beautiful lyrics by Robert and gorgeous synth work by JPJ. You can only imagine what they could have done in the '80s (this was done in 1979). Perhaps they could have made synths sound less cold. This album shows them taking chances. Wait until you hear the next track "Fool in the Rain."
