Great idea. When I finish my truck I am going to have some fun with it ( I hope many tours). Then I want to paint my son's shop name on it and give the truck to him and my Grandsons to use for their shop truck.

My grandfather would have painted that by hand in less time. He had an old back seat out of a Nash Rambler he kept just for painting on doors so he wouldn't have to sit on the ground.
When he retired in the 70's he took his sign painting kit and three small primary colors of paint and hit the road in his camper. If he needed gas or something he would barter with his painter skills. Sometimes something simple like the store hours painted on the inside of the front door glass. He could reverse paint just as fast. I was always amazed how easy he made it look. A couple of bucks worth of paint got him to the entire lower 48 states.

That's Awesome.. I have watched a lot of sign painters work. And its amazing how fast a seasoned painter can create perfect lettering.

ten littleindians Mon that pretty great I like that, that's how it was done in the old days people would trade work and skills for something my Pop's was that way he was a mechanic he didn't necessarily need the money all time he would trade skills if someone worked for a cement company he would trade to pour cement somewhere in the yard, he even traded for a black to parking lot that this guy used all his matrials after work and small tractor to pave the lot. He rebuilt a engine so it was a far trade. Yes sire I like that idea money is just a promise note anyways

Take a self tapping screw and put it through the lid on your paint and leave it there. When you go to use the paint shake the piss out of it then afterward remove the screw. Turn it upside down and give it a little squeeze into a Dixie cup. Continue until you have what you want. Put the screw back in and leave it. Paint wont dry out and you never have that skin on the paint. Plus no mess from pouring and much less waste. The paint around the screw forms a seal.

The kerning between the "T" and the "A" is off, they need to be less space between them. You needed to distress the lettering while the mask was still on and the paint still tacky. By distressing the lettering after the mask was removed you disturbed the door's patina.
A better result would be to thin out the paint so its a bit transparent and use a lettering brush to paint in the letter strokes. The stencil will ensure the letter shapes are correct. The semi transparent brush strokes overlapping gives the effect of sun bleaching. That being said having the letters on rusted metal makes no sense as they would have been originally been on the original car paint. Therefore to have old oxidized car paint with the lettering makes sense you can then rub away the lettering and the car paint together and add the rust patina. Yes?

Not sure if you know this as I didn't want to read through all 118 comments but if you want to "lock in " the rust patina and slightly darken it, wipe the whole body down with a product called Penetrol. Its an oil based paint additive conditioner to help the paint flow and level when brushed on but for some reason it is also a steel protector and will lock in rust, or on bare metal will protect it from corrosion for years.

To apply the decal easier, hinge the tape at the top instead, lift the decal, reach up to the top of the backside and start to peel the backer down. Use the card to flatten from the frontside as you pull the transfer tape down slowly until you reach the bottom, then peel it all the way off. No cutting required.
