  • Significant flash flood intercepted by drone down the Escalante River in Utah caused by over 2” of rain on an hour in the mountains above town. The intense flash flood entered through the Birch River. Large debris can be seen at peak flash flood. The active Monsoon 2021 continues. Meanwhile, a tornado outbreak happened in the Mid-Atlantic. Never stop chasing

Reed said that was from 3" of rain. I live in the Southeast and we have had 6" of rain at times without any MAJOR issues. This is fascinating to me and would love to have had a job like Reed's but would not have liked time away from family and staying in creepy inns.

Interesting flow dynamics. When the surge is traveling over a nearly dry stream bed the friction between the water and the bed gravels is enough to slow the flow so that the surface is traveling faster than the base, bringing the debris plug to the head of the flow, but when the surge front hits a deeper pool the basal velocity increases until the water flow starts to outpace the debris plug that is slowing down the surface of the flow, and the debris plug slightly disperses and follows the surge front..

The shallow water and irregularity of the river bed, together with the entrained deibris' contact with it, completely breaks up any laminar flow. Beautiful to watch it's sinuous movements through the channel.

Except theirs are generally higher. This is a flash flood. Not long after the rain in the distant hills stops the only water in the wash will be standing water. No flowing water. At 8:24, was it just a windy day or is the wind created by the force of the flash flood? I find UT/AZ flash floods fascinating! On the east coast, a flash flood is a much different (and more docile) creature.
I learned on my trip out west, weather events have varying significance depending on what part of the country you're in. Definitely keep your eye on the weather north (upstream) of you when you're in desert/canyon areas!

I could watch that drone footage of the head of flash flood all day! It's quite fascinating. But as I don't know the area, where does it all end up?

Is this rain helping fill mead or powell

Yes, helping. But not in any real significant way. We've had years of lower than average rainfall. We'll need years of above average rainfall to catch back up.
