Just did the same swap on my 2019 Speed Twin.. im falling in love with the bike again. No idea why Triumph stunted such a torquey engine with these short little gears.. was really starting to get frustrated, especially on the motorway. Thanks for the video, it gave me the kick I needed to get it done!
17/39 combination now fitted. 4000rpm is now 85mph in 6th,14.40% difference from the factory 16/42. So much nicer to ride, with plenty of instant response in top gear when required. Triumph have produced a beauty of an engine, with the 1200,and with a few mods for better 'breathing' and fuel mixture, can be made perfect in my opinion.
Great Vid....Found the Speed Twin ridiculously low geared as standard and replaced the rear 42T with a 39. Big improvement,(80mph @4000rpm)but could easily go taller again, without spoiling the ride due to the huge torque, instant throttle response and the lightness of the bike. Going up from 16 to 17T next, which I feel will give the ideal gearing for me. The de-cat,fuel booster, aftermarket air filter, front and rear suspension have all been worthwhile upgrades.....Loving this Triumph.
I've run anywhere from a 16, 17, 18 on front to 42,40, and 37 on the Thruxton R and all combinations thereof depending what I'm doing. Street , drag or land speed racing personally I prefer a 17/40 for general street riding. 16/42 is still best for drag racing if your very fast and 18/40 will get the best top speed if you only have a few engine mods.
You have some great videos! Have you ever tried a quick shifter on your Thruxton? - maybe then my slow hands would not limit how quick you go through the box!
@@sqmoto Sorry just saw this. The quick shifter on my Tiger makes about .1 to .2 different when used. I haven't got around to a quick shifter and probably won't as the year will probably be my last year drag racing. I think 69 years old is getting up there and I'm more inconsistent every year. Thanks for watching some of my videos.
I have a husqvarna svartpilen 701 75hp 16-40 sprocket stock … i am going to get a camshaft and a dyno jet so it will have 15% more whp peak and in some places 25% whp power improvements … and my question is jumping from 16-40 to the 17-37 with the power gain … do I loose acceleration or not ?

Thanks! Changing the sprockets turned this bike into absolute perfection! I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way about the gearing!
