I agree with you mostly. But after leaving Ferrari, I don’t think Alonso factored into most team’s plans. RB did not actively pursue him. AM was an improvement over Alpine. The other part of his career is bad luck. He was not at the right place at the right time. You can’t predict RB dominance in 2008. Mercedes wouldn’t want him in 2014 with LH around. It was hard to predict Mercedes success during the Vettel years when Ferrari was outperforming them. There are more factors at play than just dumb moves.
Also, regarding the Ferrari move … they were pursuing him throughout the 2008 Renault stay. Ferrari and Santander wanted him for 2010. Which driver in their right mind would take RB when Ferrari just won constructors’ in 2008? Hindsight is 20/20.
@@BakesBread001 thanks for watching, mate. 100% with you on some of the things. Especially the luck factor. But going back to Renault in 2008 while they had a bad 2007 was kinda dumb. Could have rolled the dice with RB, especially when Adrian Newey personally approached him. Also, RB approached Fernando multiple times. So, lost opportunity there. AM is better than Alpine. Especially when the 2nd driver is esteban ocon.
@@BakesBread001 yeah the Ferrari was a done deal since 2008 for 2010 and onwards. But 2008-09 could have been different. But yeah, as you said, hindsight is 20/20.
@@machined_nut I think RB did not “actively” pursue him. There are always discussions. He already knew in 2008 that Ferrari wanted him. Going to Renault worked for him because Flávio B would always take him even if the stay was short. RB would have wanted him but FA was serious about Ferrari in 2010
@@machined_nut rolling the dice on RB might have been an issue with the upcoming Ferrari deal. Part of the reason for going to Renault was a two year contract with Flávio Briatore … Alonso wanted Ferrari in 2010. He wasn’t thinking RB and I don’t blame him.
