  • For me one of the nicest but also one of the most underrated and underrepresented rock amps. Much more versatile than the OR120 without master volume and sounds just kickass. I love it and I never found demos that do this amp justice! So here you are. I plugged in my dearly beloved 1990 Les Paul Standard, used no FX at all, guitar cab is loaded with 1978 Celestion G12-80s, bass cab is an Ampeg Classic 4x10. Sennheiser Mics - MD441 off axis, MD421 on axis. For the bass demo I used my Squier Precision bass. Great Ax.

Does the normal OR120 have this much gain?

The ones I played didn't have such a thick, smooth and compressed Distortion. - which is actually hard to explain - the circuits are most likely the same except for the Master Volume wich is a PPI... But it's not like these LarMars for example, it's rather simple, done with less components as far as I remember (sold the amp). The MV in this amp really affects the tone, this could be a reason for the different kind of distortion. The normal OR120s can sound really nasty & brutal when distorting - with really lively dynamics - just like the OR120m in the Video with MV all the way up. So my conclusion is - the non-master OR120 doesn't have this amount of distortion potentials due to the non-mv-construction - even fully cranked. But I did'nt check that out completely, too loud & they always had that harsh / gnarly power amp distortion thing going on, which I don't like ..;-) But as always: There are good & better units out there and maybe a couple of changes were made in the circuits over the years, who knows... you can never rely upon the consistency of these old amps...

well I play the same amp and yeah it has a lot of gain like you hear it. I use my OD120M with a silecer from TAD. It is loud. For lead guitar I prefer the Boss SD-1. Great amp, the best one I ever had!
