Lee University Students in Blackface, Spark Mixed Emotions

  • Lee University students gave mixed reactions to a picture recently posted on social media of a couple of female students in blackface and dressed in T-shirts showing the n-word for a themed party.
    Other college campuses and celebrities have taken heat for donning blackface. Some Lee students found it offensive and racist while others didn't think it was a big deal and also funny. But the actions are costing those girls a hard lesson. We showed the photo, obtained from a Lee graduate, to students.
    I don't feel like that represents our campus, our university very well, said Jay Nelson, a student.
    Historically, white actors covered themselves in dark paint, known as black face, to negatively portray blacks. School administrators said those students recently attended a campus organization's themed party.
    Obviously, it's an action that we think reflects ignorance on their part, said Jerome Hammond, the vice president for University Relations.
    Hammond said the girls tweeted an apology and removed the picture from social media. The college is counseling them, but Hammond could not say what disciplinary action they face.
