Rather than dubbing a translation over the spoken language, maybe a subtitled translation would help to introduce listeners to the sound of Ingrian. Thanks very much for this uploading, first became aware of this people when an exchange student in Finland in the early 1990s. They are still at risk of becoming an extinct culture, so reviving the language in speech and writing is vital.

I agree with you. Many people view conformity as mandatory, and differences, whether it be in culture, race, ideas, politics, sexuality, religion, etc, as dangerous. It's sad. Even sadder, a lot of these people either run or help run the government and have the power to wipe out whoever and whatever they don't like.

As a Finnish passport holder, whose ethnicity is a mix of Savo tribe and Tornio River Valley folk (of western Lapland), this film was very interesting. I'd like to offer some thoughts from my point of view.
Izhorian mythology seems to be very similar to that of other Finnic peoples, including all the Finnish, Karelian, and Estonian tribes. Based on the film, quite a few details regarding the traditional Izhorian culture seem similar with the traditional cultures of (Finnish) Suomi, Häme and Kainu tribes for example. I could spot many differences as well, of course.
It's also interesting to learn how at least in the past Izhorians viewed Finns (all Finnish tribes lumped together, I suppose) as enemies, and were thought to be mean and ungenerous people. I think this has to do with the fact that from the 13th century onwards, all the way to the early 19th century, all Finnish tribes had been colonized under the rule of the Kingdom of Sweden ...while Izhorians (together with most Karelians, Votians, and Ludic speakers) were under the rule of Novgorod ...and then Moscow, then the Tsardom of Russia, then the Russian Empire, and finally the Soviet Union... As Sweden and Russia (and all the predecessors of the latter) were enemies, it made Finnish tribes enemies of the Izhorians. So basically all Finnic peoples were caught in the wars and rivalry between two superpowers.
Saying that during WWII Finns were on the side of the Nazis, is a gross oversimplification, partially stemming from decades of Soviet narrative. In reality we Finns had the same enemy as the Nazis did at their eastern front, that being Soviet Russia of course. This is due to the fact that just a few years earlier Russia had attacked Finland, resulting in the famous Winter War. Later, during the Continuation War, we Finns took advantage of the bitter fight between the Germans and Russians, and tried to take our lost land back from Soviet Union. Later still, we fought against the Nazis during the Lapland war, finally driving the Germans out.
I feel that today all Finnic peoples, and more widely all Finno-Ugric (or Uralic) peoples, have good relations with each other. Cultural cooperation between Finno-Ugric ethnic groups is ongoing, and that all is part of a pretty strong revival of our indigenous traditions.
As Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022, and sanctions were implemented against Russia together with strict border policies, cross-border contacts between Finno-Ugrics have been much more difficult. Let's hope this changes soon.
My best regards to all Izhorians! Terveisiä Suomesta!

    • @Pythoner

I'm from St. Petersburg. Not an Izhorian of course, I don't think I ever met any, nor Veps, Vods, or any other such rare Pokemon out in the wild.
To be honest it would be strange to meet someone here or in the surrounding region referring to themselves as an Izhorian; the reason is that this is basically a 'pre-Russian' people as they were around before Russians became Russians, but when we were still Krivichi, Novgorod Slavs, Veps and other Slavic and Finnic tribes. So saying that you're Izhorian is basically saying that you're a Russian anyway.
Izhorians were part of that initial statehood too, adopted the Orthodox faith as everyone else, but along with their neighbours I think the Vods, they simultaneously managed to keep their own identity too. Even under Novgovord they had their own autonomies (they were abolished I think after Novgorod was conquered by Ivan the Terrible). And basically these people have survived as a discrete identity, albeit in the smallest number, to this very day, despite the fact that they were themselves one of the peoples who were present at the inception of Russia, all the others of whom have long coalesced into a single ethnic group. Well I wish their culture the very best of course.

@@Pythoner Well, my friend from Piter has even a car plate with the flag of Ingria. Now I think he took it away because of fear. People who identify as Russians and those who identify as Ingrians or Karelians might have very different view on the common past as we see today on the case of Ukraine. Nation doesn’t have to do in the first place with ethnicity, but with a complex of narratives that the people share. So shortly, if You identify as Russian, You have no right to say to others who they are, just because in Your view of history You see them in a certain way.

    • @Pythoner
      @Pythoner 8 месяцев назад +3

@@imatrOlda You have peculiar friends, I've been living in Piter since 2010 and have never seen a car plate with an Ingrian flag :)
Although I did see an Ingrian flag graffiti on a construction wall some years ago. But regardless I think such 'identities' are so rare as to not be worth the discussion; we don't have a significant number of Ingrians living here since WW2, and even then they lived mostly in the countryside. As for Karelians they're still around, but mostly in Karelia, never met any in St. Petersburg but then it's hard to tell them and Russians apart.
But you're talking about Ingrians and Karelians, that's a rather different case from Izhorians, who I'm talking about. And in their case it's exactly as I say, they are literally one of the precursors of the Russians so to speak. If they still exist as a discrete identity today though too then more power to them.

Honestly, I grew up American but looked deeper into my Slovak, Pole and Slovene roots and it taught me that this "white," shit just isn't real. Imagine a few countries on the far west of Europe, "I.E like British Isles, Germanic countries, and Spain just started calling themselves and other people by colors and colonizing the world. Now anyone with a pale completion or blue eyes is blamed for it. What of Eastern Europe, Central Europe, the Balkans? You have people of that complexion going deep into Siberia. Hell, even a lot of Iranian, Turkic and Arab tribes have individuals or whole castes and tribes among them that look like that. America really needs to stop seeing the world the way it does. It is literal nonsense. I've been called racist just for saying my ancestors were oppressed and from actual Vassal states, colonized themselves and not the other way around. I mean I cannot even say a literal fact in this politically charged yet deeply uneducated environment.

@@mitchymasar9549right - gross oversimplification: white skin = oppressor and dark skin = oppressed. History is not taught properly in schools, or people would know that white Europeans like the Irish were raided and taken as slaves over many centuries. Even parts of the English coast lost people to pirates who sold them as slaves to other cultures. Humans have enslaved other humans since time immemorial. Skin color is just one aspect of it. It’s time people acknowledged these things and put them behind them. If people continue to bear grudges for wrongs committed years or even centuries ago, the human race will never move forward.

The mixing process of Slavic and Finish tribes started over 1500 years ago. It was a similar natural process as Finish people mixed with Asian reindeer herders from today's Northern Russia. But the Russians never did forced Russification on people, like the Western and other empires did. As you maybe heard in this video the Izhorians were almost exterminated by Swedish people, and they fled to Russia! I would say it shows that already in the 17th century the Russians had more humanity than the western Europeans. Also take a look at Armenia and Georgia, they were a part of Russia for several hundred years but they do not even speak Russian today! They have their language, culture, land and religion. If you go there today it looks like they never were a part of Russia! And this is the difference between Russia and the other empires.

They are not really a seperate nation nor under threat of extinction either - they're basically protestant Finns from the same Finland.

Holmgård because the amount of Finnish Farmers around there and these Islets around the area of todays "Northern Russia"

These areas where becoming more of Centralized power states, when the Swedes,Slavs and Finnish tribes united from previous Clan/Fishing/Hunting, Merchant Gathering tribes.

Sure, most of the indigenous peoples that we focus on in the US are "people of color" I find it terribly fascinating that there are so many ethnic/linguistic minorities in other countries. And there has been a lot of intermarriage too which continues. You might as well accuse the Estonians of destroying the Setos people or the Finns of destroying the Karelians.

If you ever wondered why there is a gap on the map between the Finno-Ugric langagues of the Finns, the Sami and the Karelians an the one side, and the other Finno-Ugric langage in Estonia ... the answer is Russian imperialism.
Basically the whole Far North of European Russia used to be Finno-Ugric, every region between Finnland and the Ural mountains and a little beyond. There are some surviving Finno-Ugric languages still in Russia, like Mari, Komi, Udmurt and Mordvin, but they are all relatively small and endangered.
Today the by far largest Finno-Ugric language is Hungarian, the only one that has migrated far enough away from the Russki Mir.

How do you interpret that according to grandma's story, they were slaves in Finland, with their "brothers"

    • @Pythoner
      @Pythoner 8 месяцев назад +2

      What Russian Imperialism?
'Russians' are named after the state of Rus', which was founded by a Swedish Viking people of the same name led by Rurik. These people came to what's today Russia and founded a trading empire along the rivers, established cities and forts, brought a Viking warrior elite from Scandinavia to serve as the retinue and military backbone, while enlisting local Slavs and Finno-Ugrics from the surrounding tribes into their military force too. Said Slavic and Finno-Ugric tribes were engaged in farming and fur trapping, the Rus' would buy the furs locally and then trade them to the Byzantines, Muslims and others, growing rich off the trade. They would also engage in raids on rich trading cities and empires, and trade slaves at least initially, until they baptized and adopted Christianity by the 10th century. This whole arrangement as I mentioned quickly took the form of a state, with its own dynasty as well, the Rurikids, the descendants of the original viking prince. The first capital was Novgorod, but then Rurik's successor, Oleg, moved the capital to Kiev. Rus' territory would over the coming 2 centuries grow to stretch from the White Sea and Gulf of Finland, down to the cusp of the Black Sea, with a small colony in the Crimea even. They had royal marriages with the Byzantine monarchs, emissaries in the Muslim Caliphates, and Viking nobles from as far as Denmark would travel there. Magnus the Wise and Olaf Tryggvason, both future kings of Norway, spent part of their early years in Rus', and learned the Old Slavic language.
This explains the 'gap' you're talking about. While there were no cities or much of anything in either Finland or Estonia, there had already grown a powerful kingdom between them. The tribes that would become the Estonians and Finns would civilize, Christianize and establish statehood only much, much later in history.
And all the people and peoples who lived on the territory controlled by the Rus', to the outside world, became known as the people of Rus' over time, or Russians, Ruthenians, etc... as the state continued to establish itself into history. For the people inside, they first identified themselves and each other by their specific tribal or ethnic names; Vyatichi, Krivichi, Chuds, Vods, and so on.. they were a mix of mostly Slavs, together with different Finno-Ugric peoples, and some Turkic groups on the peripheries such as Cumans and Khazars (who were partially conquered), together with their Viking elites. But overtime they intermarried, adopted East Slavic dialects as a lingua franca and simply started to referring to themselves and their land as Rus'.
So if you want to blame anyone, blame the Swedes.

Remembering, the Russians in the whole did not genocide indigenous tribes, unlike Western nations who colonized the rest of the world. The Russians utilized the Mongol or Asian mentality of colonization, they turned up and told the locals who they had to pay tribute to, hence the reason why the majority of indigenous tribes in Russia are still here today.

There are too few of them. It would result in inbreeding. Some should marry Russians, and convert them into Izhorian culture.

@@sarcasmunlimited1570 I'm not so sure about that. If they are Finno Urgic they should marry Finnish and Hungarians.

I did say culture, not ethnicity.
But you are right. They should marry other Ugro-Finns, of which there are many around lake Ladoga, and of course in Finland.
Hungarians are by now genetically quite distant.

I think you're right. I dreamed about an episode where Star Fleet had me pretend to be Captain Kirk in the first meeting with the Megaboobicons. It seems they got angry if they caught you looking at their eyes, so you had to keep staring hard at some other part. It was an easy mission, but Star Fleet never sent me back there after I woke up.
