Sure would be nice if Garmin would let us match Speed Sensors to a particular bike in our "Gear" so we could automatically track miles/bike without having to manually select the bike each activity after the fact.
Thank you for this video. I'm retired and decide to become a cyclist. I have the Garmin 830 Edge bike computer. I'm hoping to connect the speed sensors 2 to my bike. Thank you
Thank you Des for taking the time out to answer my question’s. I end up getting the Garmin Fenix 5X Plus with Sapphire Glass. Thanks my friend Keep those great videos coming
Thanks for this review. I am getting these so I can have a go at Zwift and see if I enjoy the experience of riding indoors without breaking the budget.
The speed sensor holder is a bit large for smaller hubs used on an 80s vintage bike although it did not fall off on my half mile test run. I plan to use it mostly indoors so no big deal for me.
Thank you for another great video! Quick question, as I just picked up this bundle along with a Garmin Edge 830. Does it make sense to pair these sensors with my phone as well, even though I will always use my Garmin Edge 830 when I go for a ride (whether it be on my road or mountain bike)? My concern is ending up with redundant/duplicate data on Garmin Connect/Strava, or are these systems smart enough to recognize the same data and only upload the GPS based/Garmin 830 version? Please let me know your thoughts on this topic? Thanks in advance. Cheers! :-) -Shane
Commuter here, looking to use this as an odometer for my bike. My friends don't believe that I bike more than I drive... Not a fan of bike computers or recording commutes as workouts so hoping this solves my problem. Also hoping that the data has some sort of summary such as "total biked miles this month"
How do you like these compared to the wahoo sensors? Can I use these Garmin sensors with just the iPhone + garmin connect (that is, without owning a physical garmin cycling computer or watch)?
Want to use on a spin bike with Zwift, Waiting to buy, I was hoping this new version might wake up even with the sensor mounted the wrong way (i.e not round the hub). Also ref. the calibration/wheel size, I assume done via the Garmin App, does it remember this on the sensor itself? e.g. when using with paring with Zwift will it be close to the right speed to start, You have to put in a wheel size with Zwift also but wondered if more likely to be accurate. I read someone could not quite get enough adjustment.
Des, I rely on you so much when it comes to getting my new gear. I love Garmin and your reviews are so helpful every time. So, I've been doing indoor cycling on a spin bike, it looks like my best option is to forego speed measurements and just do the cadence sensor, right?
Yup, distance and speed measurements are generally off with spin bikes since there are no gears, only resistance, but cadence can still be beneficial. 👍
Does it undermeasure or overmeasure speed and by how much? I want to get those stupid distance challenges done even through the winter by using a spin bike. @@DesFit
I'm a mountain biker. Is it okay to attach the speed and cadence sensors to my mountain bike? How durable are the sensors and are they water proof? Thanks.
Great video! I just had one question, as you are riding on a wheel on trainer and when you change gears will your speed sensor pick up that and change your gears accordingly? Any responses are welcome thank you!
Hi. Great review thanks. Can you use both sensors to give real time data on a pair iPhone through Garmin connect or Strava? Ie I can see my speed and cadence as I’m riding.
It may be a silly question, but: can i use speed sensor without having a garmin watch? (So I can use it 100% with only garmin app on my phone?) I want to give it as a present to my friend, and it would be a great start to introduce him into this world :)) Thanks for your answer in advance!
The main concern for me is the stability of the signal. Can it compete with the smoothness of a good old fashioned magnet in the spoke wired to a simply unit such as the cateye velo? I find the GPS based speed sensor too erratic to be helpful during a momentary glance down to check on my speed. Will this provide a better solution when paired to my gaming GPS unit? Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Grat video. Thank you. I am a bit late to the game as I am just getting into cycling. I just added these sensors to my bike, and they were not very easy for me to add. My question is can I leave them on the bike or do I have to remove them after every ride? Thanks again.
I’m new to the whole indoor cycling thing, so sorry if I’m asking a silly question here: I had a indoor trainer for my birthday this year - but one that doesn’t have Bluetooth or anything like that. Just fixed in and you pedal away. What I want is to be able to track my speed/ distance/ max speed/ etc when I do an indoor bike ride. So I want to see the same results as what I see on my Garmin app, then ultimately Strava, once I’ve finished my workout. Would I be right in thinking that I could get these speed and cadence sensors, attach to my bike on the indoor trainer, connect to my Garmin Venu, then complete an indoor cycling workout and then see all the results? That’s my main priority really. Anything beyond that like using Zwift would be cool but I just want to see the results of the workout first as I do like to see those stats rather than just going by the amount of time I’m cycling indoors for. Hope you can help to clarify this for me. Thanks.
Yup! You got it. Attach the speed sensor to your bike and then pair it with your Venu under Sensors>Add Sensor. You may have to adjust the wheel size in the settings of the sensor.
Amazing review and explanation of the sensors. If I understand the speed sensor correctly, if I am using a Garmin GPS outside that never looses GPS, I really do not need the speed sensor, correct?
Yup, the speed sensor is primarily used for recording indoor cycling activities or if you wanted to use that offline caching feature where it just automatically records distance while not recording on a GPS device. Thanks!
Nice video, why does the cadence sensor need to be fitted to the left crank arm? I have one of the original cadence sensors fitted to the right arm and it seems to work fine. Has something changed in the new sensor making it left arm specific?
If the Speed 2 is paired with a Garmin head unit which is recording your ride, does this mean you end up with 2x activities in Garmin connect / strava etc for the same ride? ... ie one from the speed sensor and one from the head unit?? ... or does it "intelligently" know that your head unit is on the case? ... OR ... would I have to disable the connection between the Speed 2 and Garmin Connect to save myself bouncing around apps deleting duplicated information after each ride?
Hi, by linking the sensors to Garmin connect, does it mean that whenever you do a ride and record it let's say with an edge or fenix device, you will end up having two uploads in garmin connect? one from the sensors and one from the edge or fenix?
Thanks for the great review. Do you know how these work if you share a bike (turbo trainer) with your wife? Can we log individually to our our own phones?
I am 100% jealous you got that speed sensor to work with the Connect app. I cannot get it to pair no way, no how. It WILL pair with my phone, but the app, no way. And Garmin has suffered some bad juju, so they are no help.
Nice review! Quick question - when you have the speed sensor paired to either a watch or a cycling computer, are the speed and distance measurements overridden from GPS data?
They should be coming with the new versions. If you search on Garmin’s website for Speed Sensor you should see the Edge 830/530 bundle options and the new sensor is pictured (it’s slightly rounder than the old one).
Great video, thanks for this! Just did a long bikepacking race (around 32 hours) and ended up with one main file uploaded for the entire ride and also more than 15/20 short rides, I now know this is from the speed sensor. Any way to turn this uploading off so I don't end up with all the "shorter" rides/segments? Thanks again!
Hey thanks a lot for your video! Really nice detailed and high quality for sure. Just wonder what's the point of having the speed sensor when you have gps on your garmin edge...??
Hi thanks for the video. I have a question: although the Speed Sensor 2 pairs with the phone app, the Cadence Sensor 2 doesn't pair with the phone app. Is this correct? Is there a way to connect the Cadence Sensor with the phone app (Garmin Connect)?
I'm having trouble here as well; The only way to use this is through the garmin connect app which doesn't seem to support the Cadence Sensor 2. This should work with Strava but they only work through Garmin Connect, which doesn't support the Cadence Sensor 2. Not sure where to go from here
Hi Des, This video was extremely helpful for me, thank you! It was no problem setting up the Speed Sensor as a new device in Garmin Connect but when I tried to synchronize the app would freeze and I had to cancel the operation (this was my second ride using the Speed Sensor). Now, this may have to do with the recent problems at Garmin but on the other hand the ride I had recorded with my new Garmin Venu a few hours later was synchronized without any problem. My question is: are there any options (other than Garmin Connect and Strava, which I do not use) to show the Speed Sensor recordings? As the Venu is picking up the Speed Sensor figures I was wondering whether there might be a (third party) app for the Venu allowing this? Or is that just a silly idea? Thanks a lot!
I see the speed sensor could complement outdoor riding but doesn’t seem necessary? Garmin sells as bundles and it’s a better deal to get both, then find a reason to use it.
DesFit . I bought the Edge 530 , looking forward to learning more about Garmin and using on my gravel and MTB rides. I’ll be getting the cadence sensor next. I’m still deciding on the watch model for my other sports.
Hi, I think the overshooting is because of the differences in corners. The path your front wheel travelles is always a but wider than then the centre of your steering because you lean into the corner. Additionally, the gps takes the shortest distance between te gps pulses so the gps corner exists of a lot of little straight pieces while the speed sensor on the wheel takes it as a curve, obviously a bit longer again. Therefore I think the speed sensor is not overshooting but the gps is actually undershooting.
Hi, if i pair the sensor with my fenix 5 do i still have the gps track? What about the distance and the speed on the gpx, is it from the gps or the speed sensor? What about the one showed on the watch during the ride?
Hi! Great Video! Hey, I have a VivoActive 3 Music and I do lots of Indoor Cycling (Spinning). I'm wondering if this Speed Sensor & Cadence Sensor will work if I attach it somehow to my shoe? Have you tried it?
Do you recommend the Garmin speed and cadence or the Wahoo sensors for doing a budget Zwift setup? I'm leaning towards Garmin because I also have their smartwatch, but see lots of positive feedback on Wahoo.
How does this work on Zwift if I'm using a Wahoo Kickr trainer? I have to remove the rear wheel to ride it. Any ideas? Thanks for the review btw... nice job.
Hi Des. If I want to use the sensors for outdoor cycling paired with samsung health, it is enough to buy just the cadence sensor? I assume speed can be taken from my galaxy watch 3? Thanks for your reviews. Very helpful.
I’m not sure you could pair the cadence sensor with the phone app and then somehow tie that in with the activity being recorded on the watch. I don’t currently have any Samsung watches around to try this but once I get some back I’ll see if I can make this work, but I am doubtful.
Hi, I was wondering what 3rd party app such as map my ride or strava etc you would reccomend is best to link these sensors to? There is just so many out there to choose from so looking for the one that's most user friendly and recprds the info most accurately. Thanks again for your videos, always helpful mate 👍
Garmin Connect will record all the data and then it can export to whatever platform that you’d like. I tend to like Strava because it has a large user base and I like the social aspects of it.
Does the speed sensor increase the update frequency on the display? Ie is the speed less "smoothed" or averaged out than the GPS on a typical Edge unit? I ride mostly on road or smooth trail so not much accuracy to gain but curious if the speed becomes more responsive.
Hi, I am new to cycling and just stumbled on one of your video on Garmin while I was searching how to use a low budget turbo trainer with a Garmin Edge 1030. Just wanted to asked if I could measure or record my distance on Strava using my Edge 1030 plus with ANT+ without using Zwift or any of those fancy work out rides. Thanks
If you connect this to your fenix 5x, which speed will the watch display, and which speed will garmin connect consider for your overall ride, the gps speed? Or the speed sensor?
Hello very good video, I wanted to ask if the CADENCE sensor can be connected directly to the garmin connect application without having to have a garmin device (clock, cycle computer ...). Cheers.
Yup, but there are some caveats with installing it on a stationary bike. First, you may have to position it slightly different than normal. Normally, the sensor would wrap around the hub. Most stationary bikes have a flywheel and no way to wrap the rubber holster around it. You could take the speed sensor out of the rubber holder and mount it via some (strong) double-sided tape to the side of the flywheel. The caveat with this is that sometimes the sensor won't wake up mounted in the vertical position. You have to rotate it a few times like it would normally be rotating to get it to wake up first, then it should work just fine. Setting the wheel dimension is also tricky. You may have to play around with that value a bit to get something that resembles something realistic of what you would ride outdoors. Hope that helps! Thanks!
I forgot that I had this video on the original speed sensor! ruclips.net/video/F6Cv0bL3M98/видео.html This explains what I was referring to in the original comment. Plus, you get to see one of my earliest videos! 😂
Hi des, thanks. I wanted to ask, can you say what will happen in case that connecting the speed sensor to edge device, if the final distance result will be taken by the sensor or the gps?
Is there a way to turn off that auto record feature on the Speed sensor off? I actually would not want that because I would always be recording with my Garmin watch anyway, so I don't want multiple recordings of the same thing.
Hi, I just got an indoor trainer and I went with the Garmin speed 2 to be able to use with Zwift. I can get it to pair but then I lose it and can’t get Zwift to move. I was hoping that this would be an inexpensive way to just track some miles and have fun indoors. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it to work? Thanks
Can I add those sensors to a spin bike so I can track my distance in my Vivosmart 4? That would be nice. It's hard to buy a spin cycle with a computer.
I use a wearable to collect my data via gps while cycling and I just picked these up which will arrive in a couple days to use while mostly on an indoor trainer. If I have my phone currently with me while actively doing a session will these sensors work with the session or create a separate save file? I wanted to use them in conjunction with my wearable to get more accurate data.
Is it electromagnetic light speed precision like previous Cadence or how does it measure RPM? For example stages was a disaster as the angular system kept providing different rpm depending on the push pull ! whereas EM is light fast...
Nope, no need to check. They should automatically pair after they wake up as long as your phone is in Bluetooth range. If there is an issue just open up Garmin Connect and it should be good from there.
i just tried to add the speed sensor 2 in the same way as des did on his spinner bike and although the sensor is working and i got it connected to the app it just wont wake up on the spinner.Im presuming this is because it has mounted horizontally to the side of the wheel with velcro? it worked for des!
Hey Des I'm a Garmin watch guy and wondering for my indoor spin bike with a magnetic wheel and I'm comparing these Garmins sensors to the Wahoo ones? I may in the future get a trainer for my road bike but for now, I will be doing my training on our Proform spin bike? How would I mount this Garmin speed sensor to my flywheel? Thanks Des.
No real difference between the Wahoo and Garmin sensors, other than the offline distance caching that the Garmin Speed Sensor 2 can do. For mounting, you would have to likely attach it via a piece of double sided velcro tape to the side of the flywheel since there isn't an actual hub. But use strong velcro tape! You don't want that thing flying off! 😁
I just received this item from Amazon today. Both devices show up in my phone's BT menu. Trying to access them with Garmin Connect app on my phone. Complex initiation process. Does not work without Internet access. Extremely uncommunicative about what it's actually doing. After estimating my wheel size (42×622) it feels the need to do a software update that will take "about 10 minutes". The progress bar starts at zero, then it jumps halfway across, then it freezes. I've waited far longer than 10 minutes (more like 20). It doesn't say which of the two devices it is attempting to update. On about the fourth try, I got a Garmin status message on my phone telling me that if I'm having problems with the update, to power cycle my BT subsystem, or the entire phone. Yay! Nothing better to do today than babysit a fragile Garmin update that probably doesn't even add any functionality. What was so broken with the firmware out of the factory that I'm subject to this? Well done, Garmin. My first impression is fragile POS. I don't have my Edge 130 Plus yet, but I'm already thinking about sending it back unopened, along with the Garmin heart band I have also ordered.
Hi, any good Garmin accessories for floor climbing? I have the Garmin Instinct and Floor Climb feature doesn't count floors since I'm guessing inside a concrete building. I run the stairs of my 21 floor building 4 times and would like more stats on floor climbing. I do get heart rate and use the lap feature. Thanks love the videos and your Garmin Instinct review convinced me to purchase my first smart watch.
Huh, it should still be counting floors since that's based off the altimeter and steps. I have tested that in inside stairwells and it was working for me.
@@DesFit So I may be doing things incorrectly? I've had it for a month and take stairs everyday and it has only counted stairs one day. Read the instructions and guide on line, but noting about setting the floor climb feature. Any idea what may be wrong here?
The altimeter is a bit less accurate on the Instinct than other Garmins due to the location of the altimeter, but it shouldn’t be not registering anything. I’d maybe reach out to Garmin Support.
@@DesFit Hey Des, Chat with Garmin and went through all the possible problems no luck. The barometer has never worked so that may be the issue. They are sending me a new one and returning this one. Some reviews did list the barometer as a weak point due to the placement. Stairs run off the barometer and altimeter and altimeter works fine so will see if new one works......on another note.....my wife wants a smart watch now but the instinct is too big for her. Any suggestions ? shes pretty active running, hiking, fishing SUP....
Hi if its used on a static bike will it still work out a distance I. E with the amount of revolutions of the pedal crank? Or is that only possible if actually taking the bike out using GPS? Cheers
Just wanted to say thank you, this provides a clear explanation of how both work.
Glad it helped! Thanks!!
Thank you for the helpful description of the "automatic data record" function on the speed sensor. Most other reviews don't mention or explain this.

Nope, you’ll need a power meter to track power. I like these pedals quite a bit: ruclips.net/video/Vh5Zqu60WOs/видео.html
The cadence sensor may work but that won't work for speed.
hi Des thanks for this information, do you know if the speed sensor is physically smaller than the previous version?
Do you recommend the Garmin speed and cadence or the Wahoo sensors for doing a budget Zwift setup? I'm leaning towards Garmin because I also have their smartwatch, but see lots of positive feedback on Wahoo.
Realistically either one should work. Thanks!
How does this work on Zwift if I'm using a Wahoo Kickr trainer? I have to remove the rear wheel to ride it. Any ideas? Thanks for the review btw... nice job.
How you can check the battery life for the cadence sensor? Because you can not see it on your Garmin ConnectIQ.
@@DesFit cheers for the reply mate 👍 I got the sensors delivered today so just gonna set them and get out and about see how they work. Thanks
So do you need the speed sensor AND cadence sensor for tracking indoor cycling workouts?
Nope, just speed but cadence can be a beneficial data point though
Will the speed sensor 2 work on a spin bike vertical like you did with the old one?
Thanks
If you have a speed sensor paired with your bike computer using an indoor cycling activity, the activity should sync over to Strava with distance.
@@DesFit thanks. that’s great. That’s a very quick reply. Again thank you
If you connect this to your fenix 5x, which speed will the watch display, and which speed will garmin connect consider for your overall ride, the gps speed? Or the speed sensor?
Will it measure cycling VO2 max
thanks for this video. can we connect these sensors with a garmin fenix 6x pro? can we only install the distance sensor without the cadence sensor?
Yes to both questions! Thanks!
@@DesFit thank you very much.
Sure thing
Hello very good video, I wanted to ask if the CADENCE sensor can be connected directly to the garmin connect application without having to have a garmin device (clock, cycle computer ...). Cheers.
Yes but only version 2 which has Bluetooth
Hey Des - would the
Garmin Bike Speed Sensor 2 work with a stationary bike - do get distance & speed?
Please, will the speed sensor 2 work on a spin bike vertical like you did with the old one?
Hi! Is the speed sensor 2 smaler/lighter than the 1st generation?
Hi, I just got an indoor trainer and I went with the Garmin speed 2 to be able to use with Zwift. I can get it to pair but then I lose it and can’t get Zwift to move. I was hoping that this would be an inexpensive way to just track some miles and have fun indoors. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it to work? Thanks
Is the GARMIN 2 speed and cadence sensor compatible with the TACX TRAINING app?
I'm thinking of switching from the vivoactive 4 to an apple watch. Can i pair my speed sensor to the apple watch?
Hi Des, did you have any issues with these sensors and Polar watch? I'm having dropouts.
How do they work though? Neither one have a reference or magnet to go off of?
Can I add those sensors to a spin bike so I can track my distance in my Vivosmart 4? That would be nice. It's hard to buy a spin cycle with a computer.
I use a wearable to collect my data via gps while cycling and I just picked these up which will arrive in a couple days to use while mostly on an indoor trainer. If I have my phone currently with me while actively doing a session will these sensors work with the session or create a separate save file? I wanted to use them in conjunction with my wearable to get more accurate data.
This may b a dumb question but question but im new to cycling.
If my bike have a power meter do I need this ?
Is it electromagnetic light speed precision like previous Cadence or how does it measure RPM? For example stages was a disaster as the angular system kept providing different rpm depending on the push pull ! whereas EM is light fast...
Hi Des! Will the cadence sensor work with the Polar vantage V?
Do you need to check that both of these are paired every time you go for a ride if you leave it on your bike?
Nope, no need to check. They should automatically pair after they wake up as long as your phone is in Bluetooth range. If there is an issue just open up Garmin Connect and it should be good from there.
Can you show how to connect this bundle on a spin bike? would it be like the other video with previous generation?
Yup, basically the same thing
i just tried to add the speed sensor 2 in the same way as des did on his spinner bike and although the sensor is working and i got it connected to the app it just wont wake up on the spinner.Im presuming this is because it has mounted horizontally to the side of the wheel with velcro? it worked for des!
Forerunner 245 may work well for her. Glad Garmin is taking care of you!
Does the cadence sensor connect with the peloton app? Not the peloton bike..
Can I use only the speed sensor directly conected to my PC (to use on Zwift) without Garmin cycling computer or Watch? As a basic setup for Zwift.
Hi if its used on a static bike will it still work out a distance I. E with the amount of revolutions of the pedal crank? Or is that only possible if actually taking the bike out using GPS? Cheers
Great video! Thank you
Glad it helped! Thanks!
