Thank you so much for this video!! I've always wondered what happened to Ghost Town. Good memories from going there with my family on vacation as a kid. Love that you had Possum One and could really take us into the park!
We went once in the mid 70s. Mom didn't realize it was going to that cold up there on the mtg so our goody for the day was a sweatshirt. Oh and a fake newspaper with your name it. I was around 5 or 6. We drove from Maryville Tennessee so not too far
Thank you so much for an update and the great footage. Cherokee/Maggie Valley hold a special place in my heart.
Now THIS is what a drone is for! This is awesome, great shots!!
I've lived in Sevier Co for the past 40 yrs, since I was a teen. I've been everywhere around here, even to Maggie Valley but NEVER been to Ghost Town in the Sky. I love that you "took me" in there with the drone cam. That was awesome! Thanks, Jacob!
man those drone shots were really neat...awesome job...keep up the good work
I used to go hear a lot as a child, as my grandparents lived in nearby Lake Junaluska. Burt Reynolds worked here in the 1960's along with his Deliverance co-star Herbert "Cowboy" Coward. Reynolds actually filmed a movie here in Knoxville a couple of years ago. Good memories! Great video!
The first time my parents to my younger brother and I to Ghost Town was in about 1963 I think. We went several times later in the 1960s and I went alone, immediately after graduating from High School and as part of a one man tour of the NC and TN mountains and my first solo backpacking/camping experience in 1973. I have very fond memories of Ghost Town and regret that it is gone for all practical purposes and intents. Back in the late 1990s and into the early 2000s a number of straight to DVD "B" or maybe even "C" Westerns were filmed on the grounds of Ghost Town and in the immediate Maggie Valley area. It was my understanding that many of the extras that appeared in those movies, with makeup and costume changes, appeared in ALL of those movies and that they were also employees or former employees of Ghost Town.
Sounds like that place is jinxed . They could turn it into a Zombie land Park , since Zombies are all the rage ! They could potentially make tons of money from September -October by having a Halloween Horror theme too !
Thank You for the trip back into memory lane! I am 41 years old and I was able to see things from this video that stem back to my early childhood. Too bad I can't take my children to this place, I long for the day I can. Maybe one day...
That drone is coming in handy. Nice job bro.
I have fond memories of Ghost Town. My parents took us when we were growing up. I was in Maggie Valley a couple of years ago and had to pull into the parking lot and walk around and peeped in the gift shop, there are still souvenirs in there. It made me cry because I remember how full the parking lot always was and all the crowds of people. It was a great place and I have my memories. Thanks so much for this video and the video of Mac's Indian Village. I never had the pleasure of staying there but always wished my parents would stay there just once but they had their special place to stay. Again, thank you!!
I went to Ghost Town in the Sky on vacation back about 1970. This video was so much fun to see. Thank you for doing it!
I miss this place so much. I went to it so many times as a kid!. I love the swings that went off the mountain. The last time I went was when I was 5 or 6. I wish it would re open. I'm 13 now. We almost went 4 or 5 years ago, then it closed. My mom went there as a kid.!
This is the best look at Ghost Town ever. Brilliant decision to use a drone! I bet it was exciting as hell piloting it up there and seeing all of that stuff remotely.
I remember going there as a young girl with my family. We really enjoyed it.. to bad it's no longer open.. I would for sure go back if it ever opened again. But as long as it's been closed I don't see it ever opening again.. but thanks for the memories..best video I've seen of ghost town in the sky..
Dude. Thank you so much for making this. I tried to traverse that hill last fall and not only did I fail, but I was stalked by a black bear the entire time, lol. This time I'm going back proper and taking the side road and another human and a firearm with me. But I really appreciate the updated look at Ghost Town!!
Awesome drone shots Jacob! You are very brave to take it into areas that might not have a signal and no way to retrieve it should something happen...great job!! Thanks for sharing and great history on that theme park!
Pretty cool Carpetbagger, I have been to Ghost Town many times when it was opened back in the 70's through the 80's. It was a fun place to go.
Fantastic drone footage! You took us right in that Ghost town. I'm impressed!
Woo got you hooked on the Drone.. I'm glad he did! GREAT JOB Jacob!
POSSUM 1 was the real star of this episode! Awesome job getting in there!
Thanks for giving some new footage and an update on the situation. Having made many trips there in my childhood, it's sad to see what's become of the place. I've got some great memories there. Nice work with the drone! Pretty ballsy getting it down beneath rooftop level. Well done, Sir!
+Grumpy Old Biker the main trick to make sure there is never anything above the drone
Burt Reynolds used to work there in the early 1960's when he was trying to break into acting. Reynolds would play one of the cowboys having a gunfight, and after being "shot," he'd fall from the roof of one of the buildings, onto the porch roof, and then onto the ground. During the time Reynolds was working there, a guy named Herbert Coward also worked there as one of the cowboys. Herbert Coward is the guy with two missing front teeth who later appeared in the movie "Deliverance."
When the director of the movie wanted a second realistic "mountain man" for that iconic scene in the movie, Reynolds told him he used to work with a guy years earlier at "Ghost Town In The Sky" who would be perfect for the part. Reynolds called someone at Maggie Valley and got in touch with Herbert Coward, and the director subsequently hired Herbert for the part.
My mom, niece, and I were across from the Ghost Town Village, having fun at the tubesliding hill across the street. I heard it was abandoned, so when I came back from Cherokee, I decided to find videos of it. Thanks for the info! ^^
I remember going there when I was a kid too. I rode the train that went around the wild west town and the had a cowboy chasing an Indian through the train
Awesome video! I remember going to Ghost Town for the first time in the late 80's. The Red Devil had just opened, my cousins and I rode it two or three times back to back. The gunfights were fun to watch and exciting. We went back years later when my sister was older and it was a shell of its former self. There was that feeling that it was never going to be what it had been. When I heard it was closing I wasn't surprised, and when I heard it was reopening I had a feeling it would never last. To see it abandoned now is sad. Once it was filled with people, so popular that Dan Blocker from Bonanza was once a guest sheriff and the traffic to get there was horrible. Thank you again for the video.
mysteriousyoungman did the red devil feel as unsafe as it looked? Especially the loop.
The only scary part, remember you're talking about kids who are around 11 or 10, was swinging out over the side of the mountain. If I remember it correctly you pulled out of the loading area, took a short turn and then WOOOSH you were down the drop and straight into the loop. Actually a fun coaster.
I love that you captured this! So many childhood memories there and it was nice to see it again thanks to you. I do hope it reopens in the future.
You are one brave guy taking your drone that far away from you with no access if something happens.
Lurker1979 right
Lurker1979 I was thinking about that,too
Yeah! I was thinking 'wow, did he film all that from the bottom of the hill?! What if it broke down up there?' Anyway, that's quite the range.
You got good at flying that drone.. super shots
you can get up there, there's an access road.
I have such fond memories of going to Ghost Town! I loved the roller coaster, zooming around the mountain, and the swings that actually hung over the edge of the mountain. The dancers and the Indians and the shootouts... all of it was so much fun! I just saw that it is to be reopened this year! Maybe???
Was there in the mid 1990s. As you neared the top of the ski lift, there was a sign telling you to smile for the camera, and as you passed a little booth someone took your photo against the backdrop of the mountains. You could then buy a copy of the pic (for $6) before you left the park. Thanks for the history and the drone tour!
Charlie O I have one of those pictures from when I was about 6 years old. We pass this place pretty often since we vacation in Cherokee. Went there a lot as a kid though!
"Who in their right mind would wanna walk up there anyways?" probably some guy who don't even ask your mom. 😄
+odinvonzero ha!
I am so glad it is still there and it looks its in good shape
Loved that park as a kid! It originally had a inverse tram train that took you to the top backwards!!! It was awesome. Gun fights in the streets, train robbery, people falling off roofs, very very cool.
That was awesome drone footage. Really enjoyed seeing Ghost Town In The Sky again. We took our daughters there back in the mid 80's. It was a very nice park back then.
I second Ripplin's comments,, Great work with the drone, Stead HD video's and risky low altitude shots. Loved it.
I loved this vlog Jacob! The park just needs the right investor(s).
My dad took us here as kids. Lots of good memories.
I was at Ghost Town in the Sky back in 1992. We rode the tram to the top, very neat way to transport from my perspective; by rail. Almost like the park is mining people for their money lol. I saw the gunfight and other attractions. Very crowded when i was there. Thanks for sharing. I had not heard updates in a while.
yes the train was operational. I rode it many times all thru my childhood. This video brings back alot of memories. Thanks
After my dad died I came across a picture of my brother and dad in the chair lift going up the mountain while going through my dad's old pictures. They use to be one with me and my dad or my mom. But I can't find that picture to save my life. Lot's of great memory's made at Ghost Town in The Sky.
Wow the last time when I was there was 95. 13 years old I was, loved the shootouts and the rides remember the old bar they had and the dancing girls lol.
I have many faves of your videos... this one is def my new #1. Great video, as usual. Thank you!!
Hey I've been here before it closed. I had a lot of fun.
Neat Chase! :)
What a great video! Love the history and then the drone tour. I see that there is a pending sale on this property (Sept. 2018), so it will be interesting to follow and see what happens. Great job!!
the videos are way better when you have some kind of back story like you did with this one. I love ghost town in the sky and that whole area it is near and dear to my heart.
I love when you explain these places I did it all very interesting... be careful at these abandoned places Jacob x
:)
Hey thanks for the video. I grew up in Maggie valley. My grandfather was the town's only dentist for 40 some years . His name was derl stallard . He used to know the owners of ghost town and me and my brother used to go at least 1 time a year . I had no idea it had closed . It's a very sad thing to me . It's like losing a piece of your childhood. My grandfather has past away about 12-15 years ago . And it's probably been 20 years at least since I have been there. Thank you for the video . I'm glad I know. It's very sad . My name is Jason .
i went there back in the 80's. Got so sick on one of the rides....had a good time. Thnx for doing what you do!
I went to this park as a kid. there was a swing ride that actually went out over the mountain where I was just hanging. over the edge of the mountain
Yess, and it had the revolvers crossed on it.
YES! I can't believe my folks let me go on that ride. Fun, but terrifying. lol
Yes I had forgotten that.... Thank you
The addition of the drone is excellent keep it going Jacob
Very impressed with your drone work, brilliant.
Great video, so sad when places like this shut down or get demolished,my childhood park,Americana,in Ohio went under and is mostly gone,at least this place has hope. Thanks for the adventure!
I went there when it was still known as Ghost Town in the Sky. I throughly enjoyed my time there. The train was operational at the time.
I've been waiting for more local stuff from you and an update on Ghost Town. Thanks dude!! Now post up some stills so I can add them to my collection. 👍🏻
Loving the drone....this will help get to those hard to reach places...love your work, keep em coming !!
Jacob, once upon a time, they had an ice skating show in the building where that spinning thing was and there was a diving show about 1984 or so. I have pictures somewhere. We went EVERY year without fail. I have an empty shell somewhere from one of the gunfights. The participants would empty their guns and give the empty shells to kids for souvenirs. The old firetruck was just a prop and was there for a long time, but it was on the lower level near where the roller coaster was. I'd love to know where the rides were.
The rides were at the upper level before you get to the wild west town. The rides were by the cherokee dance hall :)
The park didn’t close due to the sky ride issue. Colburn got old and stopped investing in the park. The rides were carnival style, and The attendance got worse and worse. Toss in Dollywood becoming a super regional park, horrible new management and yep’, there it sits. Sucks too because it’s one of the most beautiful locations ever for an Amusement Park!
I used to go to Ghost Town in the Sky as a kid, this video was great! Awesome drone footage. Thank you!
Excellent tour. Thank you. I did get to go Ghost Town during it's peak times. It was a great park and lots of fun.
As a child, my family went here. We took the cable car to the top, and it got stuck. They told us we had to climb out and change cars, and the people at the park and my Mom who had a fear of heights kept saying, "Just don't look down,'" as they sent another car. My heart still races thinking of it and my hands get shaky. To help me confront this experience, I went again when I was older, and my family took the cable car up. However, it was so shaky as if it could stop at any time, so we all decided to take the chair lift down.
I enjoyed the park, however, both times. A bit cheesy lol but good old fashioned family fun.
I think the place I have been that in my opinion is closest to a good, clean park that is familyoriented is Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana.
We liked your video. The drone action was really cool. That park would be so sweet if it opened . Thank you for daring losing your drone to show us that incredible footage. You rock!!
Thanks Jacob for posting this video. When i was younger i went there on vacation with my family. I love this place. As always great job on the video.
Glad you have the drone for situations like this. Outstanding!
My parents took us camping in Maggie Valley, and we went to the ghost town in the sky. They had shoot outs on the street, and all kinds of fun attractions. There were rides all on top of the mountain. I even went back in the mid-70s with my boyfriend, and it was still going well. I have a picture of us on the tram that you used to have to ride up. It’s sad that it’s gone now.
Man great drone work Jacob!! Looked great.
Went there back in the 90s. Ski lift and trolley was working. At the top old west gun fights in the streets and rides. Happy Memories.
God I actually rode that coaster. It was the scariest thing I have ever done. None of the turns were banked and we had to be pushed off by an employee and manually stopped. I genuinely thought we were going to fall out. So sad to see what it had become. It was my absolute favorite place to go as a kid. Thanks for the vid, it was a great trip down memory lane
Sounds truly horrifying
Great drone work, I love seeing these abandoned theme parks. Keep up the great work.
The Smokies and surrounds are so beautiful. I have to go some day and really visit and not just drive through. Also, as someone who is clumsy and has issues with spatial perception the point of it being clinically diagnosible (seriously), I am impressed as hell with the drone and how fast you got up to speed with it.
As said (and putting below the fold because of phraseology), you are ballsy with that thing! I would be so petrified of planting my not at all inexpensive drone on private property that I'm pretty sure I'd crash it. Then I'd have to pretend to be interested in buying the land so that I could get up there and grab it.
Cool video, Jacob. Possum One was a great addition to the tech arsenal.
Heartbreaking to see abandoned and destitute. I love a wild west themed park. I remember the advertising commercials as a kid but never got to visit.
Went there in the 60's as a kid many times. Was a lot of fun. I don't remember a chair lift, we went up and down on a train like lift on tracks that was scary. Great memories.
Great vid Jacob-- I remember as a kid going there probably 40 years ago----- many memories!!!
Wow. What great handling of Possum 1 Jacob. How fantastic a vid that was. You and possum 1 make a good team. Strange but incredible place and glorious views Love from NSW Australia
ok this is one of my favorite videos so far. you and possiom 1 are awesome! as a new drone pilot myself man you sure are brave. the birds eye views are putting your great videos into another category. thank you
+Joy Cool thank you!
Went here sooo many times when I was a kid. I miss this place.
I rode that coaster as a kid and it just had a lap belt as it went off the side of the mountain and loops only to fall off as I stood up and then got caught in a lightning storm on the way down on the chair lift!
crush41gb it seemed like an insanely dangerous coaster to me. The loop looked like a last minute add on.
yakk13 it was lol! that was the last and only time I rode it. The day Michael Landon passed actually. .
It was completely safe. It was made by a respectable company.
EXCELLENT use of the drone here Jacob! Fab vlog xx
My parents took me there when I was 11, now much older, it was an amazing adventure.
Incredible...binge watching all your shows!!
I remember going here as a kid in the 90's. The Cliffhanger is the first roller coaster my brother ever rode. It's sad that things kind of fell apart.
Great video!! I went here about 25 years ago.. So sad to see it the way it is now...
I enjoy all your videos and have seen every one of them since the beginning but you have outdone yourself on this one! One of the best you've ever posted, excellent job Jacob!
Carpetbagger, thank you for Ghost Town. I always wanted to go there, but never got the chance. Great video with a lot of info. Safe travels.
Thank you. My Grand Parents took me an my sister there and the Land of Oz in 1980. Great memories.
Went there many times and loved it. Hate to see it gone
awe man i remember one summer me and my friends went camping n trout fishing in cherokee for a week, we took a BUNCH of acid tabs and went to ghost town in the sky tripping so hard at that place!! it was stupid crazy!! the gunfights broke out at random times, i remember them falling off the roof! i also remember one ride called round em up i think, almost everyone that got on it ended up puking all over, puke flying everywhere!! had a great time, those were the days!! i miss the NC mountains!!
Awesome Drone footage Jacob! You are pretty good at keeping that thing under control!
In the 90s, it was fun to visit and enjoy the shows, etc. I loved to go there! So sorry it went downhill! To bad someone couldn't get it back up and running.🙁🙁🙁
You are getting REALLY good with the drone! This is a great video! Really enjoyed it and the history of the place! Thanks for all the hard work you do!
Wow, you flew the drone far from you.
+Abandoned Exploration_Urbex1979 it goes pretty far
The Carpetbagger Cool
The Carpetbagger then how come is it not going to open that is not demolished and they're supposed to renovate it but how come they're going to renovate it if it's shut down and if it doesn't open back up then it's going to be demolished and there will be no way to open back up ever again
I worked with a girl at a hospital that refused a drug test after getting hurt at work. Workers comp refused to pay her bill and she was fired. All workers comp claims require a drug test before or during treatment.
you are amazing dude I love getting all the information about all these places I hope you continue your work and we will continue to follow you thank you
Pretty cool. Good history and drone shots. Thanks! Nice work!
Great job on this video! Many fun memories of Ghost Town, I still have pictures of my son and I on the ski lift
Over a year later, I am still amazed you had the guts to do this!
So glad I was able to see this! Just subscribed so I'm going to have a lot of fun in the next few weeks or so. Safe travels!
Great job with the drone Jacob. Wonderful shots. I really enjoyed this vlog
Beautiful recordings with the drone, gives a wonderful overview.
The park is doomed to failure.
Drone Master Jacob! Cool stuff man. Precision drone work!
GREAT JOB Carpetbagger this brought back fond memories from 25 years ago. AWESOME job with the drone. Our family would go to Nantahala Park/White water rafting every couple of years. I still remember a CAFE we sat outside in the July had lunch and the water/river smelled so beautiful /pure and the temp was maybe 75 degrees. Think that is near Cherokee, NC also.
