For anyone wondering why we mounted the windlass on the thick starboard spacer... 1) We wanted to visually cover the old chain pipe hole. 2) It added a good solid mounting plate. 3) Most importantly, we wanted to raise the windlass so that the chain was able to get a good bite on the chain ring. To get a better visual for what we mean, you can download the User Manual from the manufacturer here: www.lofrans.com/product/4-Lofrans-horizontal-anchor-windlass/5015-royal See the top left of page 7 for a diagram.
Knowing what we know now, we would definitely use butyl tape in the future. We now have a giant roll of it onboard and plan on using it as the first choice for everything going forward. At the time, life caulk was the best advice given. But thankfully we're always learning!
A little frustrating watching how precise it was but also loving attention to detail, and you both have good balanced charisma which makes you enjoyable to watch, thanks and keep up the great content 👍🏽
We've just begun following you're adventures. Up to Ep. 16 today. We are Georgian Bay boaters for over 40 years and have always dreamed of doing the "The Loop". Looks like we'll be doing vicariously through you two. Thanks. Oh by the way, I love watching you guys doing repairs and projects. D⚓K
Been binge watching your RUclips channel from episode one till now oh I love your channel and will continue to watch every episode up through 54 or whatever is the end of the season for the baby I love your videos!
Every chore you do, every hole you drill are things that will give the confidence you will need when the poop hits the fan. It's a boat, poop happens. Good job done by all.
Congratulations on being a boater. I admire you both for your endevour of a perfect boat. tsk tsk. You guys brought back my family's many years of boating. Oh, and haul outs fixes and finally putting them back in the water. Again, Jim from Rio Vista, CA
Awesome vlogs guys! I'm 22 and a I have a big student debt... I hope in the future that I will be able to get out of my comfort zone and buy an awesome sailing boat one day!
Hi just watched this video and as a machinist just had to tell Curt to buy a set of transfer punches from harbor freight. Gives you hole sizes from 1/16 dia. to 1/2 in. and marks the center of the hole. Easier than Lauren's lip gloss.
It makes me laugh when you guys point out all the “firsts” on “our” boat ! I can so relate and I would be doing the exact same thing. Very exciting first time adventures filled with the anxiety of potentially screwing it up. That is so me ! Love your tenacity and effort to do things the right way the first time. Really enjoy the experiences you guys are sharing with us!
I guess it's time to introduce myself. My name is Earl I'm from the Smoky Mountains. Really enjoy watching your videos. You both a very kind I can tell. Thank you for inviting me on your journey. Eh XX
I started watching your channel as you bought your boat and four hours later the sunrise finds me watching you two creating canvas covers and drilling holes to reposition the windlass. Really enjoying learning from your experience. I've clicked subscribe and it feels like a great start to the day.
You two are doing a great job on your boat and videos. We have a sailboat on the other side of Wisconsin on Lake Pepin, which is part of the Mississippi River. We love channels like yours because it helps us learn things that we need to do. Thanks for sharing all your experiences.
You two are an amazing team, hard workers and unfraid to try something new. You are truly an inspiration in making me realize im not the only one afraid of causing more damage and worrying about doing something ive never done. Keep up the great content and thank you for all the possitive energy.
I watch a lot of sailing vlogs\channels. Some are okay, some are pretty good , many just suck. But, I always enjoy your guys videos. Definitely one of the best (at least one of my favorite) "do-it-yourself" sailing channels. No pressure.....but keep the videos coming!
Yes, this vid reminds me of my younger years on the Illinois River where I would be working working working on my dad's boat while other boats passed by on a beautiful day, and they would wave at us workers, not realizing that they were making things worse for us, but we would wave back with a drill or a screwdriver as though we enjoyed labor instead of sunbathing.
My fiance and I are renovating a house together and it has required learning a lot of new skills and many late nights after work. Watching you two live and work on the boat you are repairing makes our task feel a little less daunting. The way you manage to find joy in doing all this together is inspiring. Keep it up.
Sounds awesome Drew! We started together on a gut rehab of a condo in Chicago. Some skills have transferred to the boat, many new ones had to be acquired :)
Hi Guys, I have watched a lot of videos of couples that are sailing, but you two have been the most fun to watch. I live in Chicago and have a 310 Sea Ray Sundancer. I enjoy boating also. I Look forward to your next adventure. Doug
This week was very well-done. The extra time and effort spent on B-Roll and editing was extremely evident and it showed you folks are upping your skills. Way to go.
Hi - I subscribed a few weeks back but just starting to binge-watch the past few days to get caught up. I LOVE what you're doing so far. You are a great couple and enjoy life - to the fullest! Congrats. I'll be keeping up...
Wow, what a great job from both of you on your projects. It’s nice to see you guys work together and share your passion, both of your boat and the passion you have for each other. The covers look great, nice job Lauren. Thanks as always.
Hi I'm a new subscriber, enjoying your episodes prepping towards saltwater cruising are u guys there yet. A Hawaiian presently living in Myrtle Beach, SC, keep on!
All those jobs completed look terrific, you can be proud of yourselves 👍 Staying away from an electric windlass, one less device to use power, and one less thing to go wrong yeah? Did I notice two different sewing machines? All I can imagine is the first one wasn't working too well, and you organised a better one. See you next time😊
Great job on the work on the fwd deck for the chains. And, the material work for the hand rails. Love the content, music and presentation. Have fun guys x
One trick for getting straight holes with a hand drill is to make a block with a guide hole to square up the drill. You did a very good job but templates are a very good time saver and stress reliever when working with wood, fiberglass etc...
That's a very decent job on the sewing projects. I bet that has saved you both a small fortune. Marine upholsterers don't come cheap!! A good job on the windlass too, although it was a bit long winded they way you went about it. It's all good experience.
Another great episode. Thanks for the extra 5 minutes - much appreciated. The new windlass looks great and cant wait to see it in action. Great job on the covers Lauren they look awesome !
Thanks so much for the kudos! Happy to hear you enjoyed the longer video. We probably won't be making it a habit (it took us 3 weeks to get this one out!) but we wanted to show these projects fully from beginning to end. :)
Hi! A paper/card template is the way forward - placed on the bottom of the windlass and gently tapped with a hammer along all edges and holes will give a perfect template and take the guess work out of hole location. Great video's though and a fantastic attitude to the work and your mission. We are in the process of buying our first boat and have all this to come - can't wait! Good luck!
Pretty hefty project to tackle. Well done! I've had my experiences trying to pull an anchor up by hand after it's been in the mud for a couple weeks. Definitely not fun! Windlass is a must!
Hi guys! I just found your channel over the holiday weekend and have been binge watching ever since. We are Great Lake boaters out of Grand Haven, MI. Someday we plan on taking the ditch down to the golf as part of our great loop trip so it's been great seeing your journey thus far!. We are really enjoying your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. See you on the water! Chris & Breanna "Nauti Thoughts"
Ok just binged your fantastic channel. First off thank for the amazing effort. Second that marina is sweet! Can't wait for more episodes. Good luck, fair winds, and keep on keep'in on. Utah George.
Hi Garry from Dublin - Ireland, Love what you're both doing and the great work on your boat. And just how many hours of hard work you both have put into Soulianis. Really Fantastic video's. I'm so Jealousy..
Hi Lauren and Kirk! Fantastic video and we know just how many hours of hard work goes into making a video like that. You both have a brilliant attitude and will take everything in your stride. :-) We are currently sans windlass and have been mulling over the Lofrans manual vs an electric windlass. We will be very interested to know how you get on with yours. Keep up the excellent work! Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Hey guys, so far so good. We’ve been quite pleased. That said it’s gotten less use than we thought. It seems we still prefer to weigh anchor by hand most of the time but typically switch to the windlass when we’re directly over the anchor and pulling it up from the bottom. It’s a good for the muscles! 💪
I just found a collection of your videos from when I spent a couple months sailing the Pacific. Good timing while you're on a break :-) With the backing plate, if you had a long enough bit, you could have drilled 1 through, bolted in place then drilled another diagonally across, bolted that 1 and then finish the last two.
Hi ! Done :D I finally made it thru the description to find the answer to my question in one of the last video ;) Thank you for theses awsome vidéos, can't wait to see you going down the ditch :D Cheers, David
Excellent video. I’m really enjoying getting to see how you’re making her your own. Just a suggestion for your canvas work. I’m just learning to sew myself. I’ve found heavy sheet plastic and a permanent marker with tape work great together for making patterns. If the pattern doesn’t fit quite right, it’s easier to remark or remake before cutting canvas and sewing.
You are in the first part of your learning process, if you have not yet, I might suggest you watch the Sailing Uma channel from the beginning, they started with a boat in much rougher condition than yours and have done some amazing work, it is a lifetime of fun learning you are undertaking, Happy Sailing
I thought Adrift 2006 was worse as they could've prevented it by lowering a ladder! But something I will take notice on my boat to buy, that you can always enter somehow when in the water. All is lost is just an accumulation of circumstances and bad luck.
Oh! We miss using Canon camera... the quality of the images is so much better than the Sony we have now. Roberta here. I was looking for a video about windlass as we are gonna need to repair ours and I found this video of yours. Lauren did pretty good at the sewing machine. I'm anxious to start our canvas projects!
@@SailingSoulianis No, actually we ended up not buying any camera this time. We are waiting for the launch of the new Canon. It seems that it's gonna be a great camera!

Also should help prevent chain from slapping on the deck when raising the anchor.
Just a bit of advice. Leave for two weeks and then retighten all bolts....respect.
Exactly! One more reason we forgot to add. Cheers, Johnny :)
Nice work, but two words: butyl tape. And a link: marinehowto.com/bed-it-tape/.
Knowing what we know now, we would definitely use butyl tape in the future. We now have a giant roll of it onboard and plan on using it as the first choice for everything going forward. At the time, life caulk was the best advice given. But thankfully we're always learning!
