  • Learn how to make taro milk tea using real taro, which is nuttier and richer than instant powder mixes.
    🍴Ingredients:
120 g taro (see notes below if you can't buy this in your country)
    2 tablespoon sugar
    ½ teaspoon salt
½ cup jasmine or other types of green or black tea
    ¼ cup milk
    2-3 tablespoon of tapioca pearls
    ice optional

📝 We know fresh real taro can be hard to find overseas. So, we've also added our taro bubble tea recipe using instant milk tea powder (our favourite is this one amzn.to/3JqBWm9). Instead of 120g of the peeled and cubed root vegetable, you can use 2 tbsp of instant powder mixed with 3/4 cup of water. Even though powder mixes will already have milk or creamer inside, we like to add fresh milk to make it even more creamier.
📝 This root vegetable is also sometimes called dasheen. If you can't find it in the fresh vegetable section in your Asian grocery store, we recommend looking for it in the frozen aisle. In the UK, we usually buy frozen root vegetables, as fresh root vegetables are much more expensive online.
📝 We don't like our purple boba too sweet, so we're only adding 1-2 tbsp of sugar to the fresh paste in our recipe. However, if you prefer yours to be sweeter and creamier, you can also add 1 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk. Or, you can replace the sugar entirely with sweetened condensed milk in a 1:1 ratio.
📝 The natural fresh root vegetable comes out more whiteish grey than purple. If you want a stronger purple colour, you can add in 1/2 tsp of sweet potato powder (amzn.to/3W2p5hi).

I wonder what the origin is of the cartoonishly purple coloring we ascribe to taro milk tea. Was it done to make the drink stand out more than other milk teas and subsequently sell more? I gotta look this up.

We previously thought that the purple drinks were taro, but were surprised when we discovered both purple sweet potato and ube milk teas 😆 so you pose a very curious question indeed. Let us know if you figure it out!
