The last V10-powered Lamborghini? Huracán Tecnica Review | The Driver’s Seat with Henry Catchpole

- The Lamborghini Huracan is a bit of a dinosaur now, right? And the Tecnica is just an exercise in clinging on, trying to generate a few more sales in the twilight of the model’s life while a replacement is developed. It’s surely got its work cut out against much newer competitors like the McLaren Artura and Ferrari 296 GTB. That’s one perspective.
But the other way of looking at the Tecnica, is that it embodies the Huracan recipe finely, finally honed. After all these years the baby Lamborghini with the V10 has at last had all the kinks ironed out. It sort of felt that way with the STO, but this takes nearly all the best bits of that extreme, expensive halo model and puts them into a more useable package. The end result is a supercar that feels sensationally exciting but also remarkably drivable and fun.
Its longevity also means that the Huracan bucks the current trend for turbos. The 5.2-litre V10 is naturally aspirated and although that can sometimes be seen as out of date as the manual gearbox, Henry Catchpole believes that it shouldn’t be dismissed. Particularly where performance cars are concerned (we’re not about to wax lyrical about a 1.9-litre non-turbo diesel).
In this film we look at the reasons why NA still rules OK. Sound is clearly a benefit, but just why do naturally aspirated engines sound more musical than turbocharged ones? Then there is drivability; Turbos rule the roost when it comes to efficiency and producing power, but there are still NA traits that snails are continually striving to match.
Throw in some chat about hertz (not the rental car company) and a particular type of French pâté and you have yourselves an episode of The Driver’s Seat. We hope you enjoy it, let us know in the comments down below how you feel about naturally aspirated engines and what you love about them.

Thank you so much for all the kind comments. I love doing films like this that go off on a bit of a tangent (and I love that Hagerty lets me!). The Tecnica really is so good as well. As I said towards the end, it's a car that could easily be overlooked yet it is just SO fun to drive - easily the match of newer rivals. Anyway, thank you again - please do share the film if you enjoyed it (it really helps).
Is the driving position finally sorted for taller drivers Henry? Huracans have always been a bit cramped!
You are an absolute master of your craft sir. Thank you for always pouring so much passion and soul into your videos 🙏🏼
Completely aside from the excellent videos: I've read EVO for a decade now - thanks for all the awesome writing.
Thank's Henry for another great video.
But I must say, some engines stands above the Hz calculations, like the Audi 5 cylinders, from the S1 rally era. 😏
Amen to your last statement in the video!
And the same goes for your videos, long may they continue!
Thank you for producing all these masterpieces!
I’m wondering why the car has an Italian plate if it is a British version🤔
Hagerty is the new Motortrend that never was. Love Henry and love Hagerty. Putting out the best car related content
Now, if they could just get the Throttle House duo with Jason Cammisa to do a little longer format type content similar to Top Gear, they would have a definite hit on their hands.
Especially since Motor Trend dropped Head 2 Head.
@@chesspiece81 to be fair Jason is already with Hagerty, so that’s a win in my books
Where is he coming from, what channel was his late channel? Somehow I forgot now. Carfection?
@@andras.89 yes Carfection
Henry is the automotive equivalent of a Michelin starred chef cooking your video (or article if you’re so inclined). He may not add the humor we love from Jason, or the team dynamic from Throttle House (wouldn’t that be a Top Gear dream team?), but my God I could listen to him wax rhapsodic about anything automotive for hours!
He reminds me of James Hoffman, just less coffee and more cars
100%
I don't think humour is always good. The reason I think Henry shines so much is because of his down-to-earth, understated demeanor. He talks to the petrolheads amongst us like a friend, rather than a TV presenter.
The blow off valve mimic was spot on!!!
1 like = 1 respect for the audio engineering and video crew!! They keep outdoing themselves!! Hagerty ROCKS!!!
my like is for the conclusion. Let's fight and hope for a glorious combustion engined future.
@@C6SuperchargedZR1 Amen, brother!
I’ve always been convinced that the sound quality of an engine (exhaust included) stands for 50% of the motivation for buying a sports car. Your video is a wonderful demonstration of this conviction 👏
100%
Sounds like over the years they’ve given that V10 a few hundred extra RPM. If not, that’s just some impressive mechanical tuning.
I'm compelled to add to my previous comment: Henry's passionate description and language is epic; fully equal to this opera of Italian pipes and cylinders. I've not thought of LJK Setright in a long time, until now.
The visuals are awesome, as usual. Keep it up!!🔥📸
So awesome to have Henry on board this channel, he and his team bring some refinement to the channel and make it that much better.
Brilliant job on this Henry. Loved the closing statement. That NA V10 symphony sound is just perfect. Wish it was part of my life. I'll never say that about a turbocharged engine and certainly never about an EV appliance
This is a love letter to everything I have believed in for 9 years at this point from when I first fell in love with cars, I would love to live in the past if that means to have N/A Engines, now I can only hope that Synthetic Fuels can keep the dream alive, because EVs are fine in most applications, I wouldn't mind having a Honda Civic EV as a daily for example, but in fun cars N/A need to live ❤️😩
Great job Henry and Hagerty! 🙌🏻❤️
I've heard a 296 GTB start up and rev. Are the people who buy those cars seriously going to drop that much cash for such a terrible sounding car? The car is stunning, up until the point someone turns it on.
As sad as it is that the Top Gear trio is retiring, I think we are in good hands, with people like Henry, Jason, Randy, Thomas and James, etc.
I'm gonna go as far as to say that we might be in a sort of golden age of car journalism
but not driver's cars, unfortunately (unless you are on the very rich side)
How weird would it be to see Henry host a video and it was sunny with blue skies 😂
Do it! I can only recommend everybody (not only petrolheads) to drive this car once in their life. I rented one with my brother a few weeks ago and the magic of this noise is still something i think of before going to sleep - its worth every penny!
Henry Catchpole, you are sensational. Your videos and scripts always have a way of making us feel like we’re right there in the passenger seat. Amazing.
6:18 boy you did fail physics xD
you're calculating the exhaust pulses/second for an engine and you get 750hz, ok, but that's not what gives the engine it sound, look for an online frequency generator, there's nothing inherently better on the sound of a 750hz wave over a lower one.
What makes an engine sound characteristic is way more complex, and yes, it has to do with rpm, but there's lots of stuff in there producing harmonics that make it way more complex than just a matter of frequency, the geometry of the intake/exhaust and the firing order for instance.
Point is you can make a NA V10 that sounds subjectively bad.
that bit there was quite cringy for this exact reason. he threw overtones and harmonics - aspects that shape the true timbre of an instrument or engine - to the wind, in favor of calculating a singular sine wave. it came off to me as not a simplification of the maths involved, rather a negligent 'iamverysmart' bit. all it comes down to at the end of that bit is that one engine has a root note of 750hz and the other has a root note of 360hz... so... what? one sounds higher pitched than the other? nothing to be said about beautifully low tone grumbly V8s?
2 points to make. It makes me sad we no longer have Saab when they were one of the innovators of turbocharged engines of 2 and 2.3 liter engines. They struggled against other rivals with V6 and V8 engines. The other point is I am willing to forgo outright performance of a turbocharged engine over the sound of a good N/A V8. I will hold onto mine for as long as I can.
The V10 in the Huracan sounds good because they made it sound like a 5 cylinder Audi. Not a single v10 sounds like that prior to Volkswagen owning them.
Does it sound good because Audi has a history of knowing their way around a bank of 5 cylinders?, (Or two of them in a V?)
As for NA vs turbo, I love turbo, but not as much for MR cars. Coming out of lag mid turn can be an issue, and you don't really have that with the linear torque curve of NA or supercharged.
This was a lovely video, BTW.
Sounds breathtaking 💯
Masterpiece. The car, the script, the video. Henry always the reference on automotive journalism. Thx from the deep of the heart.
Nothing beats a high revving NA engine in terms of sound when comes to sound when comes to cars, and frankly the Gallarado and Huracan are still beautiful cars, a shame this combination is going away, long live the V12s and V10s of the past and present.
The “global warming” modernization of cars is Not all that green. No longer will cars last 250,000 miles. So having a eco car that starts burning oil at 60,000. has carbon build-up. and cylinder deactivation problems. The car has become a consumable good. You cant pass it down to a needy family member any more. I was look forward to buying my Mothers MK7 Golf. Why would i spend that much on an engine on its last leg? What is the answer; buy an even older car with a whole host of different problems?
It’s not the last V10 huracan they already announced the Sterrato
Henry Catchpole may be the best automotive journalist in the world right now. His angles are so much more insightful and profound than the rest. Next-level stuff.
This is why I love attending the Super Trofeo races. All V-10s screaming their way around VIR.
This exactly why I bought my 14 Cayenne GTS. It was the very last year of the naturally aspirated V8. Everything that followed are all forced induction. My previous car was an E63 AMG with the lovely 6.2 litre and nothing sounds better than an NA performance engine.
Obviously if you can have same peak power from naturally aspirated engine than from a turbo charged, naturally aspirated one is to go for. It´s more responsive wrether on acceleration or lifting off (as it was mentioned in this review), and also due its wide rev range makes it better when driving on the limit, less wheel spin than turbo or supercharged engine will provide mainly because they got so narrow rev range and high torque, eventhough turbo lag has almost disappeared these days.
and requires loads of maintenance
A heavenly video, to use the words of Henry...
NA is fine when you have 5.2 liters to play with in a 250k toy but the likes of the GT86 got slated almost immediately for being too slow, even the NA kings Honda moved to turbos quite a while ago.
I could pass those 5 slow cars on a 2 lane rd in this rocket!!!
ICE cars are the present, past and Future!!!!
It's absolutely fine to hate on turbo charged engines.
They suck and sound like got damned blenders.
More like flushing toilets.
then you remember the Audi Quattros...
Wow this is dull and corporate 😔
How not to put a like to this documentary after that "Herz theory explication" in it?
A car film is very good when you don't even have to watch it, just listen.
I love my 4.0tt v8 it’s amazing I’ll miss the v10 sounds great at high rpm
Henry my long lost brother,,, you left me without words but a huge smile and rush of emotions, talking about aspirations may we all naturally aspire to be as great as you n a 9kV10!!!! Hugely appreciated
I swear twin turbo huracans sound almost just as good as NA ones, usually turbos seriously hinder exhaust noise.
Imagine 20 years from now trying to explain what pure symphonies cars made. N/A engines, turbo chargers and even burbles and rumbles.
I love Henry Catchpole, but I am so beyond tired of the Aventador/Huracan. Lamborghini has been shilling the same product for over a decade with these unending revisions and trims. I don't know who in their right mind would buy a new Lambo over the competition in 2023 unless you REALLY like their styling which is admittedly great except for those hideous wing mirrors.
It’s a question of demographic.
the engine lid has so much design queues from the futur V12 Lambo!
My headache went away after seeing this, and the Hexagon Exhaust outlet is just amazing design thought to express that this has it.
I live in Miami and i own a convertible (a Continental GTC) but I also own a Mustang Bullit. The Bullit sounds like heaven, it's disorderly and childish. Despite the difference in price, i know which one i wanna take when i cross the bridge into Miami beach. NA engines are glorious, turbos are efficient but a bit sad, made for people who don't like driving that much.
Love the wastegate sounds he makes.
I think that is the top youtube content a petrolhead could ever imagine!!!ABSOLUTELY GREAT content HAGERTY congratulations!!!
Naturally aspirated heaven
Love this car
Best of the best... Loved the video. Never stop producing such great content Hagerty
@HenryCatchpole Wow!, I really appreciate it. Thanks to you I bought a 991GT3RS and I discovered the track experience after selling a 997.2 Turbo. Now after testing a Mclaren720s (I loved it) I decided to buy an exotic to enjoy the track 3-4 times per year and drive in the weekends with my friends exotics. I want a try divers car, something raw, fun to drive, fast.. Porsche is makes you feel like a perfect driver McLaren is not an option because of service in Spain. I am considering Ferrari 488, Huracan Técnica, Performante Spyder or Evo Spyder RWD. What do you recommend me this time?, what would you have in your garage in this case?. You are an amazing journalist!, thanks for all your great reviews.
Supercharged and turbocharged engines may have more power but they are just lifeless and sound like vacuum cleaners. The Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine is alive and sounds great with different tones that make the connection between you and the machine even stronger. I have a 2005 Audi A6 with a 3.2 NA engine and a 2016 Audi A7 with a 3.0 Supercharged engine. The 3.2 NA is my favorite by far.
Google the DAZA (pre noise / emissions changes) RS3 or TTRS. That 5 cyl, with a turbo, sounds amazing. Low down deep burble, high rev v10 like scream. Not all turbo engines are 4 pots or inline 6s sounding like hairdryers.
Well most V10 sounds good....CGT, LFA etc.
The final Huracan should be like a more extreme STO with mad aero and an even 700bhp.
Who said that?
@@Amarjit_Singh I did?
@@JaydenDimaio And what credibility you've? NOTHING!
Lamborghini is totally shitting the bed with killing off the V-10 line. The sound of these cars is half the attraction
There not gonna kill off the V10 they will strap and mild hybrid system on to there V10 to get them pass emissions regs and honestly i rather have that then a turbocharge Lambo
A bit over styled imo. The evo itself looked perfect to me
Its really absurd to convert rpm to Hz ...
Nothing like science or calculations to settle a pub argument between my V10 & someone's V6 Turbo... that's if I owned a V10. Nice work!
If they made a limited edition with a manual, they could charge twice the price.
You are the best in the business, Catchpole.
Move over Cadbury, British Cammisa is my new favorite import from across the pond.
Henry is a great Catch for Hagerty 😊and very useful science experiment on the Sound System Hz
Thank you for the Math calculation. Now I can kind of gauge noise differences between an S550 Mustang GT vs a supercar like Lambo.
Since the Huracan produces 750Hz, a 2018 Mustang GT (Euro Spec) does
(7500rpm) ÷ (60secs) = 125
125 ÷ 2 (crank shaft cycles) = 62.5
62.5 x (8 cylinders) = 500Hz.
Now I understand just how loud these supercars can be in stock form. ☺️
The NA engine...may it long continue. Thank you good sir...I needed to hear that. Absolutely love my NA 6 litre LS engines...602 crank HP in the Buick...473 hp in my GMC pick up.
Came here from Carfection. Always a fan of you.
You never disappoint.
Great video.
H.C is just SO good at this. Poetry in motion...
"it's not just that spine tingling top end.." it's the completely fake pops and bangs, too.. 🙄
I've never fully bonded with the 5.2. Too commonplace a sound now, too smooth and lacking in drama, too.. Audi-perfect.
Guess they couldn't get an LF-A on short notice, hahaha. Regardless, such a lovely video.
Porsche 917 (on a track of course) 🤗
Henry You are in my Top 3 Favourite car reviewers on you tube.
With a mastery of the English Language you have Beautifully described the Sonic Brilliance of this engine.
However 8 Minutes talking about the sound of the engine and the remainder loosely describing the driving Characteristics of this Model I am still not 100% sure what the differences are in this Tecnica model are compared to other Huracan models ?????
Keep doing what you do, It really is Brilliant.
The only thing that sucks is by the time I can get my hands on one of these they will likely be banned 😭😭
so many people get this wrong lol, the law plan is to ban new combustion cars from being sold.... if people buy up lot of cars now an dkeep them in decent condition, theyll sell big when the law passes
@@kalmmonke5037 sorry mate there is nothing to get wrong here. I wasn’t speaking of any existing laws.. just speculation based on what politicians are preaching. In California we already have people getting state reff’d for relatively normal cars being too loud. Something like the Huracan doesn’t have much time left before it’s likely deemed a nuisance (it’s already too loud in stock form for California).
I’d just like to point out a turbo does not make a engine sound bad. A turbo Huracan still sounds amazing. Manufactures get lazy the moment they use a turbo. Good example is Honda, with the new K20C turbo engines. Same as the old K20’s for the most part, just much less aggressive given the turbo can be used to make the power
You guys are absolutely killing it! Great Cars, Great Videography, and Perfect Narration. Also makes me really miss Green Grass.
Henry saying “OG” was awesome hahahaha
Lambo should continue the huracan successor with NA v10 with hybrid assistant just like the new v12 hybrid in the new flagship from Lamborghini I am sure they r gonna outsell those turbo v6 ferrari and McLaren for sure
It's good to watch someone who loves cars as much as we do, and it's easy to say that Henry loves!
Manual NA car, gotta have one in the garage. Turbo AWD cars with 67 gears, nah thanks, didn't like the S3 before everyone else followed its pattern.
In all honesty, the Gallardo was a piece of crap compared to the models of Huracan's that followed in it's foot steps . . . Just in terms of design esthetics it fell waaaayyy short of any of even the earlier Huracans.
Hey thanks for abandoning over 1 million subscribers on the Carfection channel without ao much as a goodbye. Shows how much you really respect your fans. Well this will be the last video of yours I click on.
Don't want to be nitpicking, love the NA engines but "stututut" sound on turbocharged ones comes from absence of blow off valve, psssssh is the sound with one fitted, just saying..
Didn't Catchpole already review the Huracan Technica on Cafection before.? like 6 months ago
God you must have driven around that same hill with the bend at least 15 times in this video. Maybe use more than one location for B-roll next time.
I don’t want to live in a world without the sound of suck, squeeze, bang, and blow. For me the sound of a car or motorcycle will always be the most important thing.
Why do they insist of putting that stupid farting and crackling after downshifts. It's fuel being burnt therefore making the car less efficient and it's just noise for idiots. A well set up car does not do that. Just listen to the Ferrari 458 GTE from the Hagerty video and check the downshifts. No crackling or popping whatsoever. Just wonderful sound.
The turbo will always have a lag but why isn't the supercharger more popular since it would still retain throttle response of NA engines.
Because they only care about emissions now, even though so few of these cars are on the road
Because with a turbocharger and a smaller engine you can create the similar numbers on paper to a naturally aspirated motor and because a turbo is not an extra set of cylinders you can avoid emissions with that
Yeah like what JM said I think it comes down to efficiency and emissions. Some new cars have e-superchargers now though, which use a 48v electrical system to spin up the compressor instead of a belt.
synthetic fuels?
Shout out to the manufacturer to make a turbo where its obviously a turbocharged car, with obvious boost! Like they used to be.
This guy can bring down a 200.000 crowd concert with his way of talkin'..... Zzzzz.... Zzzzz....
Really awsome to have Catchpole here😊😊😊 that V10 too👌👌👌
The Huracan variants are not even worth considering in a Corvette Z06 world, unless you just like spending money for less of a car. The world of sports cars has changed rapidly.
I would also choose the Z06. but we must remember that Huracán is much more customizable and will hold value very well. both are special cars

Holly crap, when you said the way that we breathe is fundamental, I imagined a human being with turbocharged lungs. How awesome(in terms of human performance) would that be! Run a marathon at a sprint! Corse it wold burst them(your lungs), maybe reinforce them? Probably many other problems, like where to fit it, in the mouth?. It would be great for a super soldier though.
they have oxygen cans for that , its crazy , probably only good for some sports
I know you are just theorizing, but I wanted to contribute that we don't burn oxygen with a flame, so compressed air into our lungs wouldn't make sense like it does in an engine. 😄
We do not generate power through the lungs. They just receive air and the oxygen in the air is absorbed into the bloodstream.
A super soldier would have a better metabolism, circulation and respiratory system, bigger lungs included, but not pressurized air into those bigger lungs.
That would make no medical sense. We'd need to be at least a human/cheetah/ostrich hybrid if we wanted to translate a turbocharged engine concept into our body's performance. 😀
@@kalmmonke5037 They don't pressurise the lungs though do they? Was not totally serious! Like no expert, but as I said I think it could damage the lungs.
I love your reviews. Henry can you drive CT5 blackwing. I know there is a Jason Camissa review on it. But I would really love your perspective.
If you pay close attention to the words spoken in this review you realise it is Henry, ballroom dancing with the English dictionary to a song composed by a v10. Stunning.
