Thank you so much for all the kind comments. I love doing films like this that go off on a bit of a tangent (and I love that Hagerty lets me!). The Tecnica really is so good as well. As I said towards the end, it's a car that could easily be overlooked yet it is just SO fun to drive - easily the match of newer rivals. Anyway, thank you again - please do share the film if you enjoyed it (it really helps).
Thank's Henry for another great video. But I must say, some engines stands above the Hz calculations, like the Audi 5 cylinders, from the S1 rally era. 😏
Now, if they could just get the Throttle House duo with Jason Cammisa to do a little longer format type content similar to Top Gear, they would have a definite hit on their hands.
Henry is the automotive equivalent of a Michelin starred chef cooking your video (or article if you’re so inclined). He may not add the humor we love from Jason, or the team dynamic from Throttle House (wouldn’t that be a Top Gear dream team?), but my God I could listen to him wax rhapsodic about anything automotive for hours!
I don't think humour is always good. The reason I think Henry shines so much is because of his down-to-earth, understated demeanor. He talks to the petrolheads amongst us like a friend, rather than a TV presenter.
I’ve always been convinced that the sound quality of an engine (exhaust included) stands for 50% of the motivation for buying a sports car. Your video is a wonderful demonstration of this conviction 👏
I'm compelled to add to my previous comment: Henry's passionate description and language is epic; fully equal to this opera of Italian pipes and cylinders. I've not thought of LJK Setright in a long time, until now.
Brilliant job on this Henry. Loved the closing statement. That NA V10 symphony sound is just perfect. Wish it was part of my life. I'll never say that about a turbocharged engine and certainly never about an EV appliance
Henry Catchpole may be the best automotive journalist in the world right now. His angles are so much more insightful and profound than the rest. Next-level stuff.
Henry my long lost brother,,, you left me without words but a huge smile and rush of emotions, talking about aspirations may we all naturally aspire to be as great as you n a 9kV10!!!! Hugely appreciated
Henry Catchpole, you are sensational. Your videos and scripts always have a way of making us feel like we’re right there in the passenger seat. Amazing.
This is a love letter to everything I have believed in for 9 years at this point from when I first fell in love with cars, I would love to live in the past if that means to have N/A Engines, now I can only hope that Synthetic Fuels can keep the dream alive, because EVs are fine in most applications, I wouldn't mind having a Honda Civic EV as a daily for example, but in fun cars N/A need to live ❤️😩 Great job Henry and Hagerty! 🙌🏻❤️
Do it! I can only recommend everybody (not only petrolheads) to drive this car once in their life. I rented one with my brother a few weeks ago and the magic of this noise is still something i think of before going to sleep - its worth every penny!
A lot of people who make car videos think they're the king but Henry is the Ace. This was almost poetic in its delivery. Well done again to Henry and the team.
Thank you for someone who actually takes the time to explain the beauty of this car in almost every aspect! That is now my dream car and I will have it before I’m 30 (11 more years to go)!!
Thanks Henry for moving to somewhere we can still watch your enthusiasm and here the eloquence of your words describing a passion that both you and your viewers love.
2 points to make. It makes me sad we no longer have Saab when they were one of the innovators of turbocharged engines of 2 and 2.3 liter engines. They struggled against other rivals with V6 and V8 engines. The other point is I am willing to forgo outright performance of a turbocharged engine over the sound of a good N/A V8. I will hold onto mine for as long as I can.
Henry, you are the Keith Morrison of car journalism! Astounding review that celebrates the NA engine in all its glory and in a manner that is emotionally thought provoking. Bravo!!
What a superb engaging and professional review. The filmography, narrative and composition of Hagerty reviews are truly the best of the best, and most of all so enjoyable to watch. I literally got goose bumps at 10:30 when the engine was described as “this yowling heart of a monster” 😀
Henry You are in my Top 3 Favourite car reviewers on you tube. With a mastery of the English Language you have Beautifully described the Sonic Brilliance of this engine. However 8 Minutes talking about the sound of the engine and the remainder loosely describing the driving Characteristics of this Model I am still not 100% sure what the differences are in this Tecnica model are compared to other Huracan models ????? Keep doing what you do, It really is Brilliant.
As sad as it is that the Top Gear trio is retiring, I think we are in good hands, with people like Henry, Jason, Randy, Thomas and James, etc. I'm gonna go as far as to say that we might be in a sort of golden age of car journalism
Obviously if you can have same peak power from naturally aspirated engine than from a turbo charged, naturally aspirated one is to go for. It´s more responsive wrether on acceleration or lifting off (as it was mentioned in this review), and also due its wide rev range makes it better when driving on the limit, less wheel spin than turbo or supercharged engine will provide mainly because they got so narrow rev range and high torque, eventhough turbo lag has almost disappeared these days.
I don’t want to live in a world without the sound of suck, squeeze, bang, and blow. For me the sound of a car or motorcycle will always be the most important thing.
Nothing beats a high revving NA engine in terms of sound when comes to sound when comes to cars, and frankly the Gallarado and Huracan are still beautiful cars, a shame this combination is going away, long live the V12s and V10s of the past and present.
Great review Henry, I'm a big fan of your work. One comment: it's a widely held misconception that the 'flutter' noise has something to do with the wastegate. What you're hearing is compressor stall (from the other side of the turbo). It's caused by a large pressure created in the charge pipe when the throttle closes quickly but the turbo still has momentum. It's essentially the sound of the compressor wheel 'skidding' on the air it's pushing. If its particularly aggressive, it can damage (bend) compressor blades. Dump valves are installed to prevent this (and provide better charge control also). If the dump valve is small, or perhaps due to certain dump-valve control strategies, you'll still hear some compressor stall.
The NA engine...may it long continue. Thank you good sir...I needed to hear that. Absolutely love my NA 6 litre LS engines...602 crank HP in the Buick...473 hp in my GMC pick up.
I had a buddy with a boosted civic hatch that loved to scare me on the interstate periodically. I returned the favor in my NA RSX on the twisty country back roads. He eventually learned that it takes more skill to drive on non straight lines, and the thrills are much greater.
This exactly why I bought my 14 Cayenne GTS. It was the very last year of the naturally aspirated V8. Everything that followed are all forced induction. My previous car was an E63 AMG with the lovely 6.2 litre and nothing sounds better than an NA performance engine.
Spectacular video! Thank you, Henry and team. This, and your video essay on the manual transmission (GT3) are quite the pair, and explain how I feel about both and why I go for manual, N/A cars. But, I am compelled by 'the power of three'. So, what is the last pillar? For me, for a road driving experience, it has to be some form of convertible or targa roof. Exposure to the elements around you and all the benefits that offers, ultimately leads to a more exciting and engaging road driving experience. An R8, V10, Manual, Spider captures all three of these elements, as does a Z4MR, which is why I love them. Thanks again for the great video. I look forward to the next!
The V10 in the Huracan sounds good because they made it sound like a 5 cylinder Audi. Not a single v10 sounds like that prior to Volkswagen owning them.
If you pay close attention to the words spoken in this review you realise it is Henry, ballroom dancing with the English dictionary to a song composed by a v10. Stunning.
I live in Miami and i own a convertible (a Continental GTC) but I also own a Mustang Bullit. The Bullit sounds like heaven, it's disorderly and childish. Despite the difference in price, i know which one i wanna take when i cross the bridge into Miami beach. NA engines are glorious, turbos are efficient but a bit sad, made for people who don't like driving that much.
Thank you for the Math calculation. Now I can kind of gauge noise differences between an S550 Mustang GT vs a supercar like Lambo. Since the Huracan produces 750Hz, a 2018 Mustang GT (Euro Spec) does (7500rpm) ÷ (60secs) = 125 125 ÷ 2 (crank shaft cycles) = 62.5 62.5 x (8 cylinders) = 500Hz. Now I understand just how loud these supercars can be in stock form. ☺️
This stirs up so much emotion and controversy . I had to watch it twice to remember where we are, where we're going and hear the Symphony in between. Turbocharging, and EV's are the wave of the future. But the real question is, are we ready for it yet?
I haven’t driven the Technica yet, but I think if I could only choose one Huracan, it would be the Performante. All wheel drive, titanium exhaust notes, lighter weight and stunning silhouette.
Does it sound good because Audi has a history of knowing their way around a bank of 5 cylinders?, (Or two of them in a V?) As for NA vs turbo, I love turbo, but not as much for MR cars. Coming out of lag mid turn can be an issue, and you don't really have that with the linear torque curve of NA or supercharged. This was a lovely video, BTW.

Since I was a kit I always wanted a turbo car just because how easily you can make power. Now all 3 of my cars are twin turbo. The only thing that beats a turbo car is a nice sounding V8/10
maybe sound echo box can delay sounds and change base heaviness of sound, then that can be coreelated with torque while higher rpm corelated wth higher pitch sound, energy level obviosuly naturally correlate with loudness, although in a drivetrain where combustion stays at certain rpm for effiency, this will have to be also modulated by sound canceling foams and audip speakers. inline 3 being effceint for turbo , a electric turbo can create linear correlation between sound, torque vs rpm, driver input, and possibly less emissions. and torque to maek up for the weight addition... although tires wont last as long under the weight and will have ti be more expensive sticker less lifetime tires, to a extent, and the greater weight makes it difficult to manage traction loss for fun or to save from accidents. this mabe how gma t43 will work. ironically, microplastics emission from tires and possibly some types of brake pads, are proabbly worse than combustion emissions.. we dont have smog and normal cars are better off being compact plug in hybrids where small combustion charges motor and a balance of batteyr amount for longveity while they still havnt started a way to mass recylcle the materials while petrol is a thick liquid pool as a byproduct of anaerobic bacteria , not from "fossils" as in fossil fuel.... like human donating blood, as long as you dotn take out too much at a time, its fine.. although acid rain and smog can be bad in low speed dense population areas where more people breathe, plgi hybrid tens not to run combustion for sake of ownership cost anyway, and people can choose to insist on no running combustion by a switch in car to overide the longevity and cost focused algorithim in car. "rent instead of buy" profit system can allow higher budget safer more effceint etc build quality, then make different renters across its longest possible lifetime pay for it, but you need to have legal contract or something to protect from wireless tracking and control of car, such as ""you didnt behave as we want as detected by out microphone, etc, so were taking away features by software(see romanian tvee video on "why woke wont go broke"(banks and investors authority) ) or "youll have to pay for software of hardware you already payed for" (see new jersy law trying to pass against stuff like this, like electric doedge demon software locking motor power, or prosche software locking remote key, etc). wireless key car stealing.

Thank you for the Math calculation. Now I can kind of gauge noise differences between an S550 Mustang GT vs a supercar like Lambo.
Since the Huracan produces 750Hz, a 2018 Mustang GT (Euro Spec) does
(7500rpm) ÷ (60secs) = 125
125 ÷ 2 (crank shaft cycles) = 62.5
62.5 x (8 cylinders) = 500Hz.
Now I understand just how loud these supercars can be in stock form. ☺️

Naturally aspirated engines are great, there is more to a car than speed
Turbo maybe muffles exhaust a bit in certain platforms but turbo makes induction noise become more enhanced and vibrant imo

If they have to replace it. I hope they go with the legendary in-line 5 turbo. While not NA levels of sound it has a really note to it.
