  • I discuss Moderns Horizons 3 (MH3) and it's implications for the Magic: the Gathering Online Legacy format. Early Access gave us a good first look at which cards are the most powerful cards, top cards, and busted cards from Modern Horizons 3. Let's look at how MH3 will change Legacy! Prepare to face Nadu, Winged Wisdom!

I think you might be underselling the power of the Borne Upon A Wind end-step storm decks with Necrodominance. I saw a video by Tony Scapone recently of a 5-0 league where he only lost a single game, won on turn 1 in 8/11 games, and had **protected** turn 1 kills in around half of those (possibly more). It looked pretty outrageous.

If Necrodominance is essentially the same as Necropotence in all the ways that matter for these end-step combo decks, it seems like an odd choice to ban one and not the other. I think people run around with their hair on fire too often for new things that turn out to be ok once people have had a chance to adjust to the new strategies, but the raised eyebrows seem pretty justified for this one. I guess time will tell.

I don't know if it's legacy power level, but chain of vapor seems really good in cedh lists for nadu. 1 mana removal is useful even if it's just a bounce, and with Nadu and a mana dork out, it can be draw 4+ and add some mana for U. It can save your Nadu in the process, and you can play it back down to reset the twice per turn restriction.

On Nadu and Breakfast... Breakfast players were very high on Staff of the Story Teller over Stoneforge because a card draw engine is just so powerful in that deck (it helps that Urzas Saga tutors Shuko and provides a legit backup beatdown plan).
Granted, Bowmasters slaughters Staff, so many went back to Stoneforge once LotR hit. Here's the thing, though, you don't need to change the deck at all to run 3 Nadu. Nadu with Stoneforge or Saga is going to be a easy draw six every turn. That is exactly what Breakfast wants, since your oppo is often mulliganing and/or two for oneing themselves to not die to the combo. It is going to be very very hard to lose with that reload.
And the deck already has 9 Shuko between Stoneforge and Saga. Both also provide extra bodies to target and draw. It really just needs a secondary Shuko payoff (hence why it runs wizard cycling).
It is easy to find 3 cuts for Nadu, too. Most decks run multiple Stoneforge payoffs. Wth three or four Nadu giving you 7-8 Shuko payoffs, you can cut the Batterskull, the Lion Sash, etc, and focus on getting Shuko more (though I'd still play one Kaldra). You can also probably cut the Wizard cycler too.

For Scute Swarm, if you get Bowmasters'd in response to the shuko, if you hit a land on the Bowmasters target, and you have 6 or more lands afterwards, you get yourself another scute swarm. In that way, Swarm is a bit more protected than it seems. Especially if you already have a nadu in play.

You may have been misusing Kozilek's Command a bit. I think the default mode should be inefficient removal that replaces itself with the draw. I saw you exiling a lot of graveyards that I didn't think were high priority, and in the match vs Necrodominance when you timed out while drawing towards Karn or All is Dust, you made 9 Spawns on a stable board instead of taking 10+ looks and a draw toward the win. 2 mana kill a token and draw a card, 3 mana kill a Delver or DRC and Opt, 4 mana kill Dauthi or Stoneforge and Preordain... it's always just a bit behind the curve as removal, but that's why it's only really playable in big mana decks that want to be ahead of the curve on mana generation anyway. I can't say for sure yet whether it's actually good, but I don't think it's fair to throw it out without focusing more on the cantrip mode.

Edit: Lotus Petal retraced over and over would cover the mana costs if you could trigger draws on artifact cast since it would be net positive with the 3 lands from life from the loam and you'd eventually dredge through until aetherflux.

You mispronounced Harbinger of the Seas. It's actually said "Flood Moon".

I think it’s the A, instead of An Analysis, and the - not being centered between the two words. I could be incorrect on how to use - though.

I know this is your job Phil but how can anyone be excited for more horizons sets? I am exhausted, im not updating decks, this set is just a load of rip offs and lazy call backs, the original designs like Nadu are egregious design mistakes.

I got so many new toys! How could I not be excited?! Seriously, actually play the games of Magic has been a treat, and gameplay and deckbuilding both feel interesting.
