At 18:25, that's John Mahoney (aka Frasier's dad Marty Crane) in the Miracle Ear spot. Fun fact: the person who directed the Sally Jessy Raphael show was Kit Carson, former longtime director of Rush Limbaugh's radio and TV programs.

Highlights of this episode for me:
    - The audio recording of Ronald Reagan belching his way through a press conference
    - Hearing "Soul Limbo" by Booker T and the MG's during the Dave trailer. That's the BBC cricket theme tune, but everyone knows that...
    - I'm probably going to have nightmares about Sally Jesse Raphael and Phil Donahue being the same person
    - I remember watching that Superman 50th Anniversary special, from the humongous DVD set of the Christopher Reeve era, in particular that trailer-trash mom trying to tell her kid to lift that Chevy Nova. Now, if it was a Vauxhall Nova...
    - Yes, there was such a thing as microwave sausages. Wall's used to make them over here; in fact, I believe they still do. Oh boy...
    - Why would anyone want to remake Roman Holiday? Especially with Tom Conti in it?
    - The "Scared Sexless" special presentation seemingly sponsored by an anti-diarrhoea treatment was the absolute icing on the cake.

That cooking bit was "Mr. Food", a syndicated cooking segment. Used to air all over the place.. his catchphrase was "Ooh it's so good" which you hear him say here. Mr. Food also had a catering company chain up until the 2000s.

Right before 27 minutes in was a car commercial and there was a fine print at the bottom. Those are usually dates for expiring offers which can help pinpoint a tape's approx date. I always look for car commercials if nothing else is helping. Maybe you already knew that. You got lucky with the Peter Jennings 1987 ABC News teaser giving you the precise date.

15:30 is the promo to the original “Parent Trap” which was part of the “Disney Sunday Movie” which was an edited version recorded off of TV. I do have the VHS of the “Parent Trap” which is the original uncut version, not an off-air recording. The opening and closing sequence were intact, but this airing had the opening and closing sequences removed. It was done in stop-motion animation.

    • @treadman28

They had a 2 hour time slot and The Parent Trap runs 128 minutes, so not just the opening and closing were cut but several other scenes too. And in a bit of a blunder for those kids like me who had never seen the first movie, ABC and Disney showed the original Parent Trap over two months after they ran Parent Trap II

I've had tapes from 1979 and 1982 that were of fantastic quality. If a tape is well made and stored well, it's certainly possible to get a good result even if it is old. I think the professional digitisation may have given it a better output than my setup could have done.

These kinds of episodes looking through old tapes are awesome even if those who recorded these cut out most of the breaks, a cardinal sin if I do say so myself.
Mr. Food was on WABC's news in New York. The edit/cut at the end of that segment always happened after his "Oh it's so good!"

Ben, I can verify that the Superman anniversary special was indeed aired on February 29, 1988. I know this for a fact and I also know that the live bits done outside the Superman celebration were filmed on February 1, 1988. I know this because I am in the crowd. It was filmed at what was then the New York Colosseum on Columbus Circle. I worked next-door, came out at the end of the day, saw the marquee that said “Welcome Superman”, wandered over and asked what was going on and when someone with a clipboard asked me if I was in an acting union and I said no, they said stand here. For the next five hours, I stood in the background and made my way on camera a couple of times.
I have to say, I think the version on the DVD of Superman II, which I have, has a slightly different edit than what originally aired. I only say that because I think some of my appearance was cut out on the DVD. Now I have to try and find my copy. if you do decide to digitize this hour, I would love to know where I can get access to a copy of it. Thanks for all the good work.

I can confirm that Tape #1 with NBC's "Moment Of Truth" special aired on April 28, 1993, while the Knots Landing aired on CBS a few weeks later on May 13, 1993.
Indeed, Tape #3's clip of Superman's 50th aired on February 29, 1988 at 8 p.m. So I'm very sure that ABC World News Tonight's broadcast with the clip of Nancy Reagan aired either on the same day or the following day.
The Roman Holiday special in Tape #4 aired on December 28, 1987, two days before the Scared Sexless special and three days before both WNT and WOKR's newscast involving the death of '87.

Interesting behind-the-scenes look at Archive HQ. Maybe the genesis of an OA New Year's episode there? Regarding LP mode, I don't think any VCR was optimized for LP search, or if any were, they were very few. From what I've read, RCA insisted that JVC add the 4 hour LP speed to VHS for RCA's first VHS VCR; JVC's later models added the 6 hour EP speed (which LP-having decks then called SLP). So from early on, those who wanted economy used EP/SLP, and those who wanted quality used SP, and LP was a vestigial leftover, with many VCRs only supporting LP playback, not record, and forget about optimized-for-LP picture search. My family's first VCR, pre-dating on-screen display, only recorded and had indicators in its vacuum fluorescent display for SP and EP. When playing an LP tape, neither was lit, leaving the speed indicator area blank. It felt like unlocking a secret mode.
