    I think most gardeners are organized nerds. At least the good ones are. :) Love your plan. It is a wonderful lesson in making the most out of your allotment. You prove that you can give all the things you like a go and still make it visually appealing.

    • @oldorchardgarden
      @oldorchardgarden  9 лет назад

      Oh yes, I agree, sometimes it pays to be so organised though doesn't it? Thank you, I did go a bit overboard but you can never have too many plans! :)

    You make me itch to be outside! LOL With 8" of snow on the ground, it's going to be a while, so seeing you sitting at your table and the sun in the background made me crazy with envy. I really enjoyed seeing you again, and how wonderful your garden already looks. I can't wait to see it start to grow. Thank you for the breathe of fresh air!

      Oh no! I'm sorry, but it might make you feel better to know thats the first time the suns shone so brightly in ages :) I'll send some your way to melt that snow!
      Thank you for watching Sheila

    Hi Katie...Wow, I'm jealous. We just got 8 inches of snow today here in Maryland. Thought I'd check in for some inspiration. Got it! Thx. A tip: I looove giant zinnias and that's what they are. Planted them last year and they grew taller than me! And took over the garden! They look fabulous all by themselves... maybe along the fence? Have fun!

    little bit addicted to your videos. just so relaxing to watch. this will be my first year growing veg in two raised beds. your planning is just what l am doing with an old school book,. and l mean old as l am 57 !!.so many helpful videos on utube from other veg growers as well., the rabbit tail grass grows like weed out in south Africa but the seeds were expensive at the gardener world show. so good luck with it all.

      RUclips is very handy isn't it? The Bunny's tail grass wasn't that expensive but I'm intrigued now :)

    I grew ginger last year. I bought one root at the grocery store planted it in a pot of soil with a smaller inner circle of spanish moss which is where I actually planted the ginger. Ended up with 6 roots at the end of the season in a 12inch diameter pot. Love your videos!

    Just beautiful, I will be living outside through you for the next several weeks. I still have some time of ice and snow left and will see nothing green for a while yet. It is about time to start up the heater in the green house so I can get a head start on some things and just enjoy being out of the house while it is still below freezing outside.

    I live in Montana and this is the first video of yours I've watched. I'll definitely be watching the rest. I bought a piece of ginger from the store and planted it. I have to bring it in for the winter, but it does really well. I put it in dirt to grow, but have no added some sand to the top -- it keeps the ginger a lot cleaner. Good luck

    Make sure you use a strong wire an not just chicken wire also foxes dig underneath so you will need to sink a strong wire or something else fairly deep down to stop mr fox from getting in.

    The netting you will be using on your fruit cage will have holes in it large enough for bees to enter. You could put pots of flowers and other small veggies in the open spaces in your fruit cage to invite more pollinators in to help with the berry flowers.This will give you more growing room, if you could hang them on your fence, it would save space on the ground. I really enjoy all your videos and hope you have a very fruitful 2015 garden. :)

    • @oldorchardgarden
      @oldorchardgarden  9 лет назад

      Oh yes definately, I already have all the netting so it's just a matter of making the cage a little higher and then putting the net on, oh and making a door! What a great idea about the flowers, thanks! :)

    It's good to see you back again and hear your plans for the seasons ahead. You are going to have your allotment looking beautiful. I noticed how you were putting flowers in specific locations and wondered if it might be worth growing some at the ends of the veg beds and along the front of your allotment fence if you were to dig a narrow trench there. I don't know the regulations on the site but it would give you more of the cottage garden feel you are creating. I really need to get my act together and order seeds...I've got my spuds but nothing else.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

    • @oldorchardgarden
      @oldorchardgarden  9 лет назад

      Thanks for all the ideas! Love the flowers around the fence idea but I'd be worried that I would trample on them, the paths between each plot aren't very big and it's even worse when your trying to dodge bamboo canes around neighbours plots without them poking you in the eye! :)
      Still I will definitely plant some flowers amongst the vegetables.
      Sometimes I think it's better to wait to buy your seeds, we went in a garden shop the other day and all Sutton seeds were half price!

    Another charming episode Katie, thank you once again for sharing. I too last year grew some globe artichokes from seed and they did really well. I have no idea of their taste but apparently they're a delicacy not to be missed. You're supposed to remove the flower head when they appear in the first year to encourage strong roots so I'm really looking forward to seeing them in flower this summer and indeed sampling them too.
    Ginger you can grow from a bought root from the supermarket although I've not tried it myself.
    Really looking forward to meeting the hens when they arrive and so impressed with your in depth planning - maybe that's where I'm going wrong.
    Welcome back.
    John

    • @oldorchardgarden
      @oldorchardgarden  9 лет назад

      Thank you John.
      I'm very excited about the globe artichokes and can't wait, even though it will be awhile until I taste my first harvest! I hope you get plentiful this year so you can tell me how they taste too :)
      I've actually saved a piece of ginger which was left over from a shop brought packet, I'll have to do a bit of research though.
      The hens may be another month yet, I still haven't been able to make the cage and I want it to be ready for them before they get here, but I'll be sure to show them off once they arrive :)
      Oh I doubt your going wrong at all, I just like to plan a little too much!
      Thanks again
      Katie

    Happy New Years on the Allotment! I wish you the best of luck with the chickens! I love what you have planned for this year!
    I on the other hand have 3 to 4 feet of snow on my garden area and even more on a raised bed from my snowblower. We have minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit here in upstate New York. Snow might be gone by July! LOL

    i grew that variety of leeks last year and was very impressed, will be doing the same this year but will be doing it the way Terry Walton does it, he grows them in plastic tubes, to prevent dirty leeks and increase the blanched area from what i can recall

    • @oldorchardgarden
      @oldorchardgarden  9 лет назад

      My Dad always grows this variety and I did the same last year, actually I still have about 6 in the ground ready for harvesting (and my Dad has around 20 left!) They are great growers aren't they? We tend to plant them deeper and get lovely white blanched ends, but the tubes sound great :)

    Did you change microphones, Katie? I noticed a car go by and it was barely audible. That is different from your earlier vids when the cars were plainly audible. Your voice sounds more natural, too. The effect is quite pleasant.

    Hello again, I know this is an old video but I saw your seed collection and I'd love to know if you had any success with the blue poppy (meconopsis) I've tried to grow that from seed myself and failed miserably, have since been informed they are hard to grow so if you ever manage it I'd love a few tips....no need to reply if you didn't manage to sow or grow them, I know what it's like when you have so many subscribers and comments, hard to keep up. Ann :)
