    As a nearly 25 year designer, with 11 or 12 of those is an art director, it's insanely interesting to see these videos that teach you about the art of design. It's one thing to know how to do the design and it's absolutely another thing to know how to apply it on the fly to dynamic situations between what your art director or creative director wants, what the marketing team or sales team wants, what editorial wants, corporate wants, I mean it's all over the place. And that's before even third party integrations yada yada yada.
    I hope many are not taken away from these videos that you learn some skills and now you're a designer. You may know how to design, but being a designer is a year's long activity, and learning how to handle yourself within the business of course can be learned in 6 months if you're a unicorn. But unicorns are rare for a reason.
    There's even still quite a schism between in-house design and working with agencies. Agencies can have a subset of clients or broad reach when you're huge like dentsu or so. When California rice cakes needs something innovative for their next marketing idea that they pulled out of their butt, are you ready to create something amazing for them? What about Sandy's shoes? Or geraldo's putting snacks?
    It sounds like I'm being facetious but I'm actually not. It's one of the reasons why I no longer enjoy agencies, actually I never enjoyed them. Years back my team at a social media network had to create a homepage on our network for Honda. We did a nice little compact ad for the latest Civic, and that had to go to the intermediary agency before it even went to the client of course. The agency sent it back to us and was like dumb it down. They didn't want to create a new standard of work because it would just mean more pressure on them. Yeah this stuff happens. More designers need to talk about the ugly side of the business. Cuz while there is some beauty to be enabled to rack your brain all day and come up with ideas and solutions and problem solve problem solve, there's a point which you got to make a decision that is this your next 30 years of any Tom Dick and Harry company coming to you and saying we need stuff. You may not have to think about it right now, but you're going to get to that bridge. I've had creative directors be pissed at their teams because none of them wanted to step into a manager role. We've had managers of creative who didn't even do creative themselves. It's all over the freaking place.
    And now with AI breathing down designers next, all I can say is good luck to you guys. AI means they're going to be asking a lot lot lot more from you, like the seven hats you're expected to wear right now anyway even shortly out of school.
    So how about some videos on the ugly side of the business because everything can't be rah rah rah all the time. It's just not honest and it's just not truthful. Focusing on a positive of course gains the most, but it ignore the ugly of the business is not helping anyone. All of this stuff needs balance.
    My 2c. Cheers.

    Remember that each client requires a different approach based on their goals, company size and market they are in. Adding value to an astablished goal does not mean ignoring the requirements but expanting on them. Make sure to communicate with your client to make sure you are on the right path. I see alot of designers instead of leading the client to success, ignoring them. Communication is key.

    Tom, thanks for all your amazing videos. I got my graphic design degree in 1990 and way back then learned all the principles of design that I still use in my work today, which you refer to in many of your videos. It's heartening to see these important principles still being explained, and anyone new to graphic design should definitely come here to learn what makes it all work! Software can do amazinng things, but it can't teach you what makes GOOD design, let alone help you become an advanced designer as you explain so clearly in this video.

    I love your channel and have been watching for years now. And though I would agree 99.9% of what you say on a design front. Very few designers will ever be in a position where they can pick and choose. There is a huge difference between commercial graphic designers (working of 5 - 10 projects a day), to someone working on one menu for a month and being given the freedom to express themselves.
    For me, one thing all graphic design lessons can not give you is creativity. Having an image in your mind and being able to recreate it in digital format is the most valuable thing, which is so difficult to teach.

    I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I think a good designer can communicate just as effectively with solid communication and psycholgy as a master Photoshopper. Even more so. And effective communication still boils down to the basic elements. I've noticed how visual communication is so strong in body language too. Handed down from generation to generation since the tribal fire. It's unconscious.

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  Год назад +2

      for sure. graphic design is ultimately visual communication, something a lot of people forget

    Always great content from my beloved graphic design teacher. THANKS again and again. However, may I offer a suggestion? It's about the tone of voice which currently sounds a bit monotone. I recommend considering a more dynamic approach to highlight the key concepts. This adjustment could greatly enhance the overall course experience, making it more engaging and easier to focus on.

    Thanks for the great presentation and content! This was really a good one! And yeah, this stuff can get pretty deep, so still a lot of learning to do and your stuff has been extremely helpful indeed. Just one suggestion for future, perhaps you can analyse even more all the different types of metaphors and how they are actually put together? Like some are juxtaposing or merging together similar symbols, then others vice versa contrast conflicting ideas, some present the problem and then provide a solution, then there's also lots of substitutions etc.

    I adore your content! I have a question though, as a self taught designer, what exactly do you put on your resume to get hired.... Other than listing "proficient in Adobe suite, etc." I have a degree in something completely different than design (in education), so how do I get employers to look at me without formal education in design? I feel like many self taught designers can be even more qualified/knowledgeable sometimes bc of the amount of discipline that had to be done to be self taught in the first place haha - would really appreciate some insight into this, thank you! ❤

    • @SatoriGraphics

      you need to have a top-notch portfolio and to demonstrate how skilled and competent you are. Show how you can solve problems with design skills within the portfolio. Grow social media accounts and make a name for yourself. Alternatively, you can always take a 2-3 year course in a design related course, online or in person

    • @loomonda18
      @loomonda18 Год назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback! My main concern is getting to the step of the employer even looking at your portfolio, if the resume doesn't show design education. I feel like they would just skip you lol - do you think this is the case? Do you think that taking a design course is basically necessary for anyone to take a second look at you? Pertaining to the resume@@SatoriGraphics
