Just a quick reminder, this is Sweden we're discussing, not America
And these are... _were..._ nonviolent criminals.
The main thing is to force them to sit down and do some therapy, while keeping up a support network on the weekends.
People with ties to the outside do less crime, see?
American prisons don't want to reduce crime. They just want _slaves._
@@JoshSweetvale Ah that makes sense, I knew that Sweden worked like this, but I never really took the time to understand why. Nifty
And yet it is just as bad in different aspects.
@@JoshSweetvale Weird how that never works.
@@gabrielclark1425 ...yes it does.
It's the horrible dehumanizing slave camp shit that just makes prisoners crazy, unified and angry.
Machiavelli: Never do your enemy a small injury. In other words: Either try to help criminals stop being criminals or just kill them. Anything inbetween is goading the tiger.
Fun fact about this IH video: he reached out to a couple reactors to do VA work for this, and that's just cool
he does that quite often on these movies
I literally sprayed Sprite through my nose the first time I saw Chevezz in that video. And watching Skitten (his wife) react to it was pure GOLD! 🤣
@@edim108I watch Chavez and Skitten react to this video whenever I need a smile.
He’s friends with most of them. For example, he’s good friends with Sumito and they’ve been on each others channels often
i think the reason the art has very little protection is the same reason the thieves held onto the paintings for so long. after all, the word "priceless" is quite literal. it is actually unsellable.
They are definitely sell-able, it happens. Some people dedicated enough just steal art for themselves.
I'd bet the reason for lax security is a mixture of reasons but primarily a small population in a modernized stable country will almost always have a very low crime rate and by extension frequency of severe crimes. Essentially to prepare for such a situation would be a waste of money.
Low crime and...another thing about art...insurance is a way to cash out. If it gets stolen they get closer to the "theoretical speculative" price, than the actual price.
@@sovietspy8866 You can try if you have a buyer ready, but trying to sell famous art is incredibly dificult because it is recognisable.
@@AlanXEverfrost yeah that's definitely a big part of it. You need to be well connected in some kind of criminal underworld or you're really screwed because you can't get rid of it can't sell it and probably can't hide it for long.
If you end up destroying it because you can't get rid of it and then get caught you're in a world of hurt so it becomes a real burden.
That's the rule of any theft like this; Make sure you have a buyer lined up _before_ you steal the easily-identified wanted item.
When they had the 3 paintings as specific targets, I assumed there was some Epstein in the Bahamas who picked them out of a catalog and was willing to pay the delivery fee for a painting he can't display openly
11:38 A consistent highlight of these videos is how excited Alicia gets when she accidentally predicts stuff. Having a model capable of being so expressive is a treasure at times like that.
It's not that advanced in terms of body movements, but even for a 3d model it has some of the best facial movements I've ever seen, which is funny because I've seen models with smoother transitions between expressions, but hers just feel more detailed or natural
Dude I wish most of the V Tubers would have mo-cap or something. Most models are really bad an don't communicate body language at all.
"Here for a good time, not a long time" has a double meaning. It CAN refer to a party that's supposed to be short and informal, but it could also refer to life in general and the whole "life is short" philosophy.
a "YOLO" kinda thing
Memento mori, carpe diem!
Live big and short, and not small and boring
Could also be taken in the "two thrusts of passion" kind of way
@Haakie that's the only context I know it by.
That whole thing feels like one of those DnD moments when you roll Nat20 for pulling off some incredible feat and now you're left asking yourself "now what".
Like seriously, how do you pull off an Ocean's Eleven heist and then the rest is like a Dumb and Dumber movie 🤣
Blows my mind that the whole thing fell apart because dudes used their real phone numbers.
Selling stolen art is really difficult. I remember from an art heist documentary that some art thieves or even criminal organizations use them as bargaining chips to get reduced sentences when they get caught for other crimes.
That’s pretty smart
Plus there's the fact that the 'value' of art is really really subjective. Just because you say a painting is worth x millions and you insure it for x millions, doesn't mean people will buy it for x millions.
What gets me about this entire thing is that they managed to screw up at the simplest steps like destroying of the evidence. The fact that they didn't use a burner phone for the boat thing is mind boggling let alone the rest of the things like carrying around a bag full of pictures of the stolen goods. Just how... how could a group of people manage to figure out all this, actually pull it off, and then turn into 20 IQ individuals with the most basic things?
That's probably because the guy who planned it out took inspiration from previous heists. More specifically, from _articles on those heists._ While those described the grand details of elaborate plans and how the theft went down, it's unlikely they covered all the nitty-gritty that goes into actually making it a reality, leaving the petty thieves with a very lopsided know-how on Art Thievery 101.
Also they kinda dumb.
I think it kind of makes sense, because the heist relied on audacity more than anything else. There was a veteran art thief who stole tons of paintings all over the world by simply walking into a museum, grabbing a painting, and then walking out with it. He got away with it for years. This was basically that kind of heist. It doesn't necessarily take brains, just the willingness to actually do it.
The Swedish legal system is so pathetic it was easy for them to do so.
@@Anthropomorphic The only reason that worked was because no one updated security like pressure switches or basic sensor technology for ages
Or just think how they would sell the paintings.
So glad you’re checking out the rest of IH’s content! Lovely stuff.
:D thank you for the support and super comment! Hell yeah it's so fun to continue on checking out his content
@@aliciaxdeath I'd also recommend his video about Fallout 76, it was (i think) his first really popular one.
To clarify on the furlough thing; while different countries use it for different reasons, reoccurring furlough like that is mostly intended to help ease inmates back into society. Its similar in concept to a halfway house.
Aren't they only for petty/nonviolent criminals? Because the common argument I've seen against it is "Uhhhhh but *MUrDerErs?"* but I feel like that's not true.
@@kaitlynwickham6237 Depends on country and the nature of the furlough. Keep in mind that escorting someone in chains by an armed guard outside of the prison is also a furlough. But yes, generally speaking if someone is allowed to check out of prison for the weekend then they're usually convicted of something non-violent (or, at most, something mildly violent) and a good prisoner besides.
Honestly, that makes sense to me. If you're spending 20 years behind bars fighting for dominance and blowing dudes for cigarettes, then you're not going to just walk out of there and be in a good position to get a job. So you're going to just fall back into some gang or crime again and nothing gets accomplished.
This stuff sounds crazy from an outside perspective, but when you think about them they honestly do work to accomplish the goal you want from a prison, which is to punish and reduce how many people are out there committing crimes. If you get out and you're used to things and have normal connections, then you can get a job, and now you have less incentive to, say, rob a convenience store or something out of desperation.
The reason these guys got such small sentence is because it took place in Sweden where the focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment. One of my favorite musicians (Varg vikerness) stabbed his bandmate to death and only he got like 10 years as well as a synth to make more music (He made a couple albums while in jail)
True. And while I can totally understand that this seems wrong and off-putting to some people, the statistics show pretty clearly that the results are way better.
@@XYZ-ll1kw Also, people drastically underestimate how much time 10 years of your life is. A whole country could seize to exist in that time, a child could become an adult with a decently long and successful career, you could realistically lose multiple family members to natural causes alone. (Not to mention the incredible rate at which technology advances now.)
The US's standards for jail time have desensitized a lot of people to how much time locked away is worth, and ironically enough; punitive jailing systems like America's are the ones where time locked up matters all the more. 10 years in a Swedish prison is a lot and most people would struggle to reintegrate into society, 10 years in an *American* prison is pretty much a railroad straight to poverty and career criminality out of sheer lack of options or incentives to even try anything else.
Didn't he also get convicted for setting buildings on fire with people inside it?
@Slawa Boga They work pretty well in the Netherlands who's about as homogenous at the USA. If by homogenous you mean 'white'.
@Slawa Boga By that definition the US is more homogeneous then the Netherlands. Only 74% of the country is 'Dutch'.
As for crime, you're deranged. Crime has been going down consistently since 2010. Break-in's halved, public assault did the same. Total registered crimes went from 1200825 to 806210. That's about a 30% reduction. If you take into account population growth it's effectively even a greater drop.
Also there has been no attempt at seizing farmland in the country at all outside of regular seizures by the banks for defaulting on loans. That's been a flat out hysterical lie by certain groups for some reason.
The country is also far from religiously harmonious. The USA is more homogeneous in their Christian denominations then the Netherlands is and they're a larger part of the country. Islam is also significantly larger in the country compared to the USA.
I'm pretty sure someone's explained it, but the title derived from The Italian Job, a mob bank heist from the 60's with a corny 2000's remake. Also, this is one of my favorite IH history videos he makes. How rollercoaster beautifully comedy of errors.
Hell yeah! I was just rewatching your video on Costa Concordia. Always happy to see you watch more of IH's content. I also highly recommend Defunctland for future videos. Especially their work on the history of the Disney Channel theme.
I dunno if she ever watched it but that was a truly fascinating video.
About the old man being a witness: Real talk. Never mess with senior citizens. Like life in prison, Death isn't always much of a deterrent for them at that point.
One really good video game related video is:
Jacob Geller's "The decade long search for Shadow of Colossus's last secret."
It's 22mins and a fun watch for anyone who loves finding secrets and following the bread crumb trail
Heck yeah for Geller’s videos.
"We did it! Alright, what's next?"
"I dunno, I didn't think we'd get this far..."
I once heard this whole thing compared to playing a detective game, but on *story mode* , where basically the whole plot kind of resolves itself lol
13:39 "Then again, it's the 2000s, how many heist movies did we have at the time." In Sweden we had quite a few actually, with one fairly popular series of movies called "Jönsonligan" (or The Jönsson Gang in English) had been getting movies since the 80s and one released during December of 2000. They even had a reboot movie in 2015, though it was met with mixed reviews. The main issue was that the originals where all mainly comedy movies with a heist at their center while the reboot tried to go for a thriller instead.
21:05 wow, that escalated quickly) That was the first thing that came up to her my mind) Great, protect her by any means necessary!
Indeed such a precious little bean
3:30 Ah. It's easy to forget, living in North America, where, for instance, _Ocean's 11_ came out in 1960, but you need to remember that even the most _popular_ ideas take time to spread.
The concept of crime had only made it to Sweden around 1996, and it was still uncertain whether or not it was really going to catch on. There was really no way they could've foreseen that someone might want to take their art away without asking.
Man, I love the rigging and tracking on your model. You going oooohhh is adorable.
Just what I needed, thank for brightening the day! It was fun watching you becoming increasingly more confused at the antics!
:D I'm glad I can do that!
The Gentleman Pirate and to be fair, most of his "one-word-title" videos on his incognito mode channel are really good watches. The Gentleman Pirate being another story video like this one and the other "one-word-title" videos being very short versions of podcasts with similar style of editing like his other videos. Just rather than focusing on one singular story, he focuses on a topic and just talks about things in that topic.
Alicia: "Omg, how's there so little security in this museum?"
Meanwhile, everyone in sweden: "not in MY sims game"
11:20 look... We have a very different view on prison and rehabilitation here in Scandinavia. I recommend checking out some tours of Norwegian prisons for example
The Scandinavian prison system is a non-punitive approach where the main goal is rehabilitation and not punishment, which is also why even a life sentence is 18-21 years. It seem short but for the worst offenders there is possibilities for extended continuous imprisonment to protect society from the individual.
Great video btw!
Yea, the Nordic prison system has its ups and downs. It's great for petty criminals that can be rehabilitated, but i can't say it feels great to see some absolute monsters who tortured some child to death for fun get 14 year sentences while spending their prison time getting university education.
I am surprised vigilante justice isn't more common in Nordic countries.
@VLPR It is actually more complicated. A lifetime sentence can be made longer if the prisoner isn't rehabilitated, and for extreme offenders they are usually kept in there a lot longer.
@@davidnilsson5045 All i know is that Norway has a system like that, and i learned about it because of Breivik.
But in my home nation of Finland, not a single person has served for more than 22 years in prison since WW2, and the average for "life sentences" being 14 years. That 22 years barely over 1/4th of one's life expectancy.
@@MidWitPride Though depending on when it was committed, It's also potentially an amount of time equal to that you've already lived. A lot of crime is caused by dysfunctional environments, mental issues, etc. Some people are monsters, but some people are driven to commit monstrous acts. If you kill someone and end up 22 years in prison at twenty, you're 42 when you get out. You have a lot of change in you still, and the rehabilitative system is designed to help make sure that change is for the better. Sure there are monsters that need to be kept in, which is why Norway has that life in prison plus essentially "Containment", whereby they will serve a minimum sentence of up to 22 years, and after that, an assessment is made by professionals within the security apparatus, a trial is held regarding release, and if there is sufficient evidence that the individual may pose a risk to society, they can be contained for a further period of up to five years before another reassessment.
"We're here for a good time, not a long time" is the second half of a quote from a legendary rally driver, Colin McRae. The first half is "Straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers." It's all about rallying.
1. I love that the *fuck up* of the thieves is 100% *not exagerated* . They pulled off all this Ocean's 11 style bullshit despite being a gang of petty thieves that had *never* pulled something like this before and then fucked it up by using their *real* phone number while getting the boat they needed.
2. The whole bit of low-risk inmates being able to go out on the weekends is not only a good way to help them reintegrate into society, but Sweden isn't alone in this type of sentencing or at leasr not anymore. Hell, in Missouri they apparently have a program called *"Purrfect Pals"* which allows inmates who show consistently good behaviour to care for homeless foster cats and its been proven to *greatly* improve their mental health and actually made the ones who didn't show good behaviour before *want to do so* out of the prospect of having a companion during the rest of their sentence.
The problem with the US prison system is that it's a punitive system that pretends to be rehabilitative, and it's been that way for as long as the country existed.
One of our first prisons, which were made by the Quakers with an eye towards being rehabilitative, sought to do so by covering inmates' faces and forbidding them to speak with anyone.
Because that would totally help them reform and not drive them mad.
4:40 The name varies from place to place, but a good catch-all term for the water police is just ‘[Insert name of department] Marine Unit.’
It’s not as cool as Estuary Enforcers, Water Wardens, Atlantis 5-0, or something, but it’s what we’ve got.
Marichaussee. Hon hon. Which is also the merchant marine.
For Americans we usually go with "Coast Guard"
Its always fun to watch Alicia pause the video, say something and then have the video say exactly what she said. At this point, it's like clockwork
That date book with all the plans gave me The Wire flashbacks. "Is you taking notes on a criminal fucking conspiracy!?"
No joke, NordVPN and Raid: Shadow Legends ads legitimately have their own cinematic universe in IH’s ads. At one point the Nord guy dies in one ad and comes back to life in a different ad when NordVPN renewed the contract
In Sweden, prison for low-offenders is not so much seen as a punishment but as a treatment, much like rehab is, which can come with similar restrictions, but does indeed allow them to walk among the others, with the restriction that they must show back up at the time they're supposed to, lest they risk being bumped up another level of dangerous person.
However, in true Germanic/Nordic fashion, the time to be back at the facility is down to literal seconds.
SsethTzeentach's videos on Elden Ring, Starsector, Morrowind, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are some of my personal favorites when it comes to game reviews. He's got a certain kind of off-brand humor that just hits right. Also, Maxor's video on Elden Ring is another good one. He's made two as of this writing, but more are definitely on the way. Just some recommendations!
There was no security because no one thought a bunch of dumbasses would try to steal something they couldn't possibly hope to sell
To be fair... the whole papertrail started from the one fisher's decision to follow them, not knowing the heist and simply following his gut instinct.
Sure, the lawyer would have still appeared to offer negotiations, but that wouldn't really help them as they wouldn't have known who the lawyer's clients were.
Alicia: "No one knows what you say in a phone call!"
NSA: 👀
42:10 I almost expected a sniper to shoot the painting and everyone be like NOOO! if only we used nordvpn
You may laugh about lenient sentences, but there is always a problem of a breakpoint, at which every extension of a punishment becomes pointless because the criminal already sees his potential sentence as good as life. So instead of stopping the criminal from digging his own grave, it just desensitizes him/her more.
My country has a story of one road patrol stopping the wrong car - car of high ranking politician. And there was more than just speeding after search. The politician bragged about how he is going to ruin the cop's life and how he is going to get him 10 years out of his ass (And he could. Yeah, laws are stupid). The cop then pulled a gun and unloaded full mag into the guy, then reloaded and capped his passengers.
In court, he calmly stated that his family was threatened and he was threatened with 10 years, but the only thing he could get for the deed is 15. He got 5, shortened to 3.
While this story has a good ending, many are not. For example, we have a story of a guy being on his 3rd strike robbing a garage (Some moonshining dudes had self-autonomous op in there. Dude tracked the schedule and went to town when nobody was home) He was spotted by 9 y.o. girl. Out of fear of being busted, he killed the girl.
I love this recurring trend of Internet Historian being just a few seconds ahead of Alicia, so many times she gets caught in the "I JUST SAID THAT" situation, it's hilarious.
Not much security, because most criminals usually don't bother with stealing from museums (unless they are Indiana Jones villains). These guys quickly find out why.
The PGR Hikari theme is a blessing to thy ears. Such a good choice of outro. Love your reactions a lot. Wish to see more reactions of you with IH videos in the future
Haha. It reminds me of a story from a town i lived in. Someone successfully robbed a store at night while it was closed, but dropped their ID on the floor…
Your reactions are so entertaining! I always look forward to a new one!
The thing about art theft is if you don't have a buyer already, it's not immediately profitable. Because the art is VERY hot after the heist, it can take years, as much as a decade or more for the art to cool off enough to sell. So in the meantime, your sitting on priceless art making you nothing, so all the costs that went into the heist are basicly sunk
You checked out my suggestion! Glad you liked it so much! I really like your content, you're a great commentator and you've excellent sense of storytelling from what I've seen in your other channel with the ATLA series!

As someone born and raised in Sweden, this makes my day. Love your vids and reactions!!
Classic paintings are like NFTs for the rich. The whole point is to park some money in something that is unlikely to depreciate; but by breaking the provenance of the art with theft they might have been better off buying a replica.
I would highly recommend The Gentleman Pirate. It's another one of the documentary-style video with some crazy history stuff.
"Clean" 30 mil? It was anything but clean.
I kinda want to recommend Jacob Geller. He does video essays. Pick which ever pick your fancy if any.
If you can still find a copy of it, the best Internet Historian video has to be Man in a Hole. Unfortunately the original got taken down, while all the reactions to it remain up. But yeah, it's the longform video that made all the rest of these get big! ^_^
I thought IH was big before? His COVID mockery, Fallout 76 and Concordia vids got _millions._
Yeah, I would more consider Internet Historian to have gotten big with either HWNDU or Fallout 76.

3:43 “Is there just a Swedish trust system or what?!”

YES! I love internet Historian.
My favorite (besides the Area 51 video) has got to be the gentleman pirate video. It's so good!
Most countries do furloughs, usually for healthcare, family visits, or work/school. And yes, Scandinavia is known for prioritizing rehabilitation over extreme punishment.

your random shock and surprise at things is honestly great lol. Love the content and will probably keep you as the only V-tuber Ill watch .
The prison thing, usually the furlough thing I believe is mostly for those who already sat most of their time...its kinda like a back into society integration thing if I'm not mistaken.
For all that work, all those years and risk, they tried to sell it for 200 000 Swedish krona, not dollars. That is about 20 000 dollars.
I absolutely LOOOVE heist shit. because the setup and explanation of how they pull off the heists is always amazing. and they way they get caught is equally as stupid! 😂😂
They made a comedy movie about this simply titled Rembrandt, only it ends with the painting still being gone as the movie came out in 2003 before the actual thieves were caught
I'd highly recommend the other videos in Internet Historian's "Sundance Rejects" playlist, especially his video about the pirate Stede Bonnet or the Man in a Hole video, that was an emotional rollercoaster
Sometimes fact is weirder than fiction and history tends to create stories that even I couldn’t tray faking or replicating if I tried, heroism, desperation and an emergency build great moments
This is a classic story in the Incognito collection, a crazy tale that was fun to watch you react to!
Loving the content on your new channel! I hadn't seen the internet historian before seeing your reaction and its been a fun rabbit hole to go down.

21:03 I just started regularly commenting on your videos today thanks to the One Piece-reaction "don't clip this"-attitude of yours. I'm just sad I didn't start sooner. There's one of these every time...
I watch video essays like these sometimes, its so interesting to see how crimes like these wre pulled off and how the culprits are eventually caught. There's a lot of unique methods people have used. If you havent already, would recommend watching the story of the Japanese man who escaped 3 prisons. I think his last name was Sawatori or something like that.
Oh yes more internet historian, btw his fallout 76 video is amazing.
Agreed, the Glitches alone are worth watching it
It's so good that I somehow thought that Alicia already watched it, but no, she didn't.
I recommend Man in a Cave. It's a really good IH vid with a good story you'd love.
the main reason the security is so low is no one think someone is that dumb to steal something you can't sell.
The small things are harder to get right than the big things. Consistently being aware of every possible tiny detail is what makes actual professionals elusive.
Mimicing them is easy even for an idiot, but those tiny cracks add up.
Heya, pretty new to your content but if you are open to suggestions, for videos i recommend either Ssethorvens video on Space Station 13 or Count Dankulas Dragonlord saga in regards to one if the biggest lol cows on the internet. As for games, i reccomend a game called Othercide.
Othercide is a brutal game, and I mean that it is incredibly punishing in terms if mechanics, but it is also incredibly beautiful in terms of graphics and ost and the lore for the characters and their designs only adds to the tragic beauty of the game and the setting.
As for Ssethorven...yeah he is a character lol. His vids are epic though, the same for Count Dankula.
Hey Alicia, glad to see another great video. I wanted to also recommend a video called "The Fall of Phoenix Jones" made by Atrocity Guide; I think you'll least find it interesting. Regardless best of luck and see you next video.
And all of that happen because a old man decided follow a few odd fellows in a boat.
A old man turn the perfect crime in to the goofiest one.
In the US, you can be detained for 72 hours without being charged. Fun fact: those 72 hours don't always include weekends or holidays, so don't get arrested on a Friday before a three day weekend!
I'm amazed that a lawyer agreed to be the ransom intermediary.
Yesss, another one ❤, also yes the saying I'm here for a good time not a long time is the morbid interpretation.
Also a other amazing reaction!
Its funny to see you wonder why the swedish legal system isnt as uniquely cruel as the US one.
Makes me wonder what crazy stuff we all have just been conditioned to accept as normality in daily life.
IH actually has 4 channels.
IH - main channel.
Incognito mode - skit-style (like this vid) and his fuck around channel with friends.
Storymode - channel primarily about telling the plots of games in incredibly comedic ways.
Live Laugh Love - his livestreaming channel, largely abandoned at this point.
I can't believe he was sponsored by NordVPN and didn't make a single joke with Nordstrom's name
"Here for a good time, not for a long time" Is literally the old YOLO.
Pursuing pleasure over health or safety, not caring if you die.
In Sweden, no security was because it used to be a safe place.
Over the decades all manner of crime have increased over 1000%.
Sweden is the only European country where fatal shootings have risen significantly since 2000, leaping from one of the lowest rates of gun violence on the continent to one of the highest in less than a decade. In 2018, Sweden had the highest gun deaths in Europe due to increased criminal gang activities.
