Dante is still somebody that knows how things go in the real world, while they are there stuck not knowing, so thats why they go on and talk, when othere way they would just keep being there stuck and not knowing, so they were curious to know.

It's also important to underline the extraordinariness of the Divine Comedy from a linguistic point of view.
The entire work is written in the style of a poem. Every verse has the same number of syllables, eleven, every single one of them. All verses of the entire masterpiece are grouped in blocks of three (called "terzine", like little thirds). The terzine have a very strict and complex rhyme scheme: ABA BCB CDC EDE and so on. This creates in the reader a feeling of flow of verses which is impossible to recreate in any translation.
Most books lose a lot in translation. Some lose almost everything. I wish i could read many languages so i could read classics how they are suppose to be. The Divine Comedy, the Koran, the Bible, etc.

@@aaronpark2396 every canto ends with a single verse so that the total number of verses ends up being a multiple of 3 plus 1, representing the Trinity (in 1, God, there are the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Also there is a total of 100 canti, 33 for each book+ the introduction, for the same exact reason as before. 100 is composed of 3 digits, and the sum of its digits is 1

The first fan fiction from Dante. Of course he feels a "connection" to Virgil what with Virgil being Dantes literal man crush and all time hero. His one issue is his hatred for Greek mythical hero's and his total loyalty to all Roman heroes.
It's funny seeing how he deals with the ones that the Romans converted into their own versions.

@@ghintz2156 I'm not aware if it's Italian today but it was a very Roman centered view of the world. Even though he wasn't from Rome he seems to have been quite the Rome obsessive and one of those who only ever saw the good bits of Rome and ignored the rest. So basically anything after around 200CE...
He did this bc he considered Rome the city of corruption, especially Pope Bonifacio VIII who was still alive when Dante wrote the comedy, and he doesn't miss a chance to compare the corrupted Rome to the ancient honest Florence (especially with Cacciaguida in paradise)

You forgot to mention the actual punishment in the circle of Lust. It had a never-ending storm raging that would sweep up the sinners, and smack them into each other, symbolic of how they'd throw themselves unto one another in life.

We also have a version of Joe Joe Bizzarre adventure: Orlando Furioso. My favourite part is when his girl cheats on him, the dude gets lunatic and , destroys an entire forest. This forces a friend of his to take a griffin and fly to the moon(luna in italian) where the sanity of Orlando is stored in an ampoule. One of the coolest aspect is that the moon is filled with creatures, basically the author was imagining aliens back in 1500s. It is a very important part of our literature that doesn't get much attention, because of course dante does.

I remember hearing about one of the first movies ever made of was about The Divine Comedy. At least Inferno and it seemed well made for its time. But I would like a modern version. Same story and setting, just with modern movie techniques and technology.
An Italian production from about 1911 exists. It is well worth a watch. While modern film based on the Inferno might be worthwhile, it wouldn't be easily translated to film. However, a recent book titled Inferno a might be more contemporary. Either way, no production company or movie company would take a chance. Finally, who would be be capable of writing a screenplay.

As an Italian myself, who was born and lives in Florence and takes Dante (the greatest poet in Italian literature and one among the greatest in all of literature in general) and his Divina Commedia as a source of infinite pride, I have to say you guys have done a fantastic job, especially when it comes to the *amazing* artwork you made.
When it comes to the narration, it was a bit shallow, but that's not to take anything whatsoever away from all the work you put into this: The Divine Comedy is so rich, complex, majestic, packed with analogies and lessons on life and Christian faith, that a RUclips video would have to be a week long just to fully explain Inferno alone.
You guys told this story as a fairytale, and that's totally ok.
However, we must not forget that the Comedy is *way* more than just a good story: it is a lesson of life, an insight to Dante's voyage, from the beginning in the dark forest, which represents his mid-life crisis, to the Highest Skies of Heaven, where Dante finally meets the Heavenly Light of God and finds the Faith he had lost.
The Comedy shows us the corruption of Society, as Dante puts both politicians and clerks in Hell alike and doesn't shy away from expressing his political views.
The Comedy is a pearl of literature, the meaning of which goes way deeper than you think.
Can't wait for part 2 & 3 ❤️

As far as been a good companion to the Bible I'm not so sure about it; personally I like to think that the whole Divine Commedy is a metaphor, in fact I see it as an inner journey of each individual who can transcend himself going through the darkness within living his own personal "hell" and by doing that one can find peace and rise up to the highest peaks reaching "heaven". So basically, in my opinion, Hell and Heaven should be seen as inner conditions rather than physical places. Hope I made my point clear :)

I recommend reading "Inferno" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, if you haven't already. It's a modern take on Dante's Inferno, written by authors mostly known for science fiction. It's a damn good read.

Dante Alighieri is to me a kindred spirit. I read his works when I was in college at Virginia Tech. I shared this read with my sister who also read this piece and it changed our lives.

In Italy, we have to study all of the three parts of Dante's journey, across the last three years of highschool. I believe this is one of the best things ever written by a human being.
PS: Virgil was the poet who wrote the "Aeneid", and was considered to be the best writer ever by Dante: he was such a fanboy

It's part of our culture! It is actually the first work that has ever been written in modern Italian language. Dante has a special place in everyone's heart here in Italy💓

I find two things interesting about this tale:
1. Despite being rooted in judeochristian lore the story sure takes a lot of influence from Greek mythology, basically making both intersect in a shared universe.
2. Greek heroes that were praised for being cunning and clever in Greek myths, are ostracized in this tale for being considered mischievous from a Christian perspective at the time

@@NovatheDawn No problem. Cool thing is, that after the fall of Constantinopel the muslims took a loft of the ancient writings and studied them. From there those writings got to Italy, and it started a new age remembering and refering to the ancient scripts. Therefore this time period is called the "Renaissance".
As an Italian I'm so sorry that no translation will ever do justice to the Divine Comedy. People from all over the world should be able to know how beautiful it is...
hey! i'm looking to do the Divine Comedy by myself from start to finish. Can you please suggest some resources for it like the best out of translations currently available and maybe a commentary/explanation, etc? It would really help
@@jackieweaver3884 I'm not the right person to help you, I'm sorry. I didn't read the Divine Comedy in english :( However, Wikipedia tells me the most recent translation has been done by Alasdair Gray and published by Canongate Books in the UK

Last read the Divine Comedy 4 years ago. Dante was obsessed with a woman named Beatrice. She plays a significant mention in all 3 parts. The most interesting is the Inferno. But you mustn’t stop there. Purgatory & Paradise are necessary to understand the entire piece. It is a lengthy read as it is full of unfamiliar language. You will be able to understand it, but you won’t be able to just skim through. Patience and time are required.
I've tried numerous times to finish this book and it seems to be impossible to me, I abandon the task always at the purgatory.
Yea it was a great read, all 3. Read it back in 2012. The English used was fun to read.

I remember picking up this book thinking wondering why it was even a comedy. I think it was a really interesting fiction book, but I couldn't grasp why it was considered a comedy. Thanks for the amazing video.
Back in medieval times the word comedy ment "happy ending" rather than funny.

Still have it, replayed it last year. Dante's inferno was the only poetry I could stomach at school

I like to imagine characters from media that completely don't fit into the roles but share names while I listen. Fate/Apocrypha's Chiron isn't really into his mew job as security guard of hell, arrowing sitting ducks in boiling river, but agressive takeover by YawehCo. didn't leave him with much choice. The new administration is very racist and only lets centaurs work there. He is a hardworker but he has tired eyes cuz his heart isn't in it at all.

Virgil was actually a Roman writer and poet and lived during the reign of Emperor Augustus. One of his more famous works is the Aeneid, which I suggest to anyone interested to read

Ok I hate to be that guy but it kinda works that way because when we are born we are born with a sinful nature so basically we are born into sin if that makes sense and if you accept Jesus Christ as your savior you WILL go to hell

I’ve read the Divine Comedy 3 times. It is a brilliant allegory of our journey through life with all it’s ups and downs.
Sorry, so late to the channel but I'm absolutely looking forward to the next chapter. I've attempted to read/listen to Dante for most of my adult life - with sporadic success. Thank you for your work. I feel like I might be able to make sense of it now.

Italian literature student here: actually Dante doesn't put the souls in the circle of their worst sin, but in the most rappresentative one:Cleopatra, for instance, was more known for her love affairs in the middle ages and would also work better as an exemplum. However one of the biggest virtues of the Commedia is that poetry can overcome the strictly rational approach to have a bigger value in the whole structure of the journey. (sorry for my very poor English!)
Wonderful video, here in Italy we do study "La Divina Commedia" in high shcool reading all the book. We do study inferno in the third year, purgatorio in the forth and paradiso in the fifth. All in the original 15th century italian

@@cosettapessa6417 it is actually quite similar to how Italian is nowadays, we had also a translation, the so called "parafrasi", at the end of every "canto" and the book was ritch with notes explaining the meaning of certain pieces

i don't wanna sound dumb here, but how "difficult" is this book? i usually love modern classics and 19th century gothic lit but kinda intimidated to start this one.

The Divine Comedy is one of the pieces of classical literature that has always fascinated and interested me the most. It is very cool to see how the people from that time period imagined hell to look like, even if Dante probably put some of his own flavor in there.
